finally some commentary on this one:
the main thing i wanted to do with this edit was to stick to scenes without ilya or that involved ilya as little as possible to stay with the main theme of the song about one's public persona and the expectations society places on you, and not put too much focus on their private relationship. However it's obviously very difficult to exclude ilya on the shane and ilya show, and there are of course many aspects of their relationship that are influenced by the pressure and expectations from society that shane faces. So anyway, let's talk specific lines:
"with perfect all-canadian hips tits"
i'm not that big of an olivia fan i dont really know all the lore so Thank u to everybody who pointed out that that was originally supposed to be the line there. Because that's him too <3
"i don't get angry when i'm pissed"
for this one i used 3 scenes and the idea was to start with a moment where Shane was holding back anger (the weird racist question in that interview), but then there's two moments where Shane does show his anger with ilya bc he can be himself with him and not just a perfect all-canadian. But the pressure to be perfect is still there in those two moments!!
Vegas rooftop: this whole interaction ends with shane breaking their kiss because "they're in public". He doesn't allow himself to have that moment with ilya bc They're in public! he has to be a perfect all-canadian
First all-stars hook-up: it's a moment behind closed doors so he allows himself to show his full anger with the death-stare he gives ilya. But the reason he's angry in the first place is because he felt exposed by having to wait in the hallway
"i'm the eternal optimist"
as @liliesrozes so cleverly pointed out:
#eternal optimist being moments where he talked about his confidence in winning.. yeah that's him ! that's the thing he's optimistic about!
that was my intention with the clips i chose, which i think does take away a bit from the satirical tone of that line originally but #whatever
"i scream inside to deal with it like Ahhhh ahhhhhh ahhhh"
not much to say here thank u guys for the love on the shane freaking out montage, it was definitely the most fun part to work on for this edit<3
"i'm sexy and i'm kind, i'm pretty when i cry"
plenty of better scenes to choose from of shane being pretty, kind and pretty when he cries, but again i wanted to go more with his public persona. so:
both "i'm sexy"s are from the ad shoots, as in, he can be sexy in this commercially palatable way, but god forbid he's a real person with sexual desires
"i'm kind" - the first one is that scene of him holding Hayden's baby which shows that yes! he's kind! but he also makes a 😬 face which i think is very funny bc of course he's kind but he's also not perfect about it - the second one is when carter vaughn interrupts them at the tampa hotel bar. He's polite he's kind yes.. but what lies beneath? his crush on carter vaughn 🫵🏽 i see you gay boy.
"i'm pretty when i cry" undoubtedly the Vegas bathroom scene is the prettiest we see him when he cries, but again, i wanted it to be scenes with other people so i chose those two where he's doing his little "I'm not crying if the tears don't come out thing", he's being so perfect by not crying, but then in the end with yuna, he breaks ..
