new problem area unlocked: i hate making summaries after studying. I used to take notes while reading but figured out this is not active studying and I was just mechanically transcribing concepts, and they were overwhelming because I still didn't know enough about the subject to understand what's actually important and what's not, so i was also taking longer on topics that aren't as relevant. but I hate making summaries after D:

Amnesty International backing down (hiding its report) when threatened with JKR's lawsuits just shows how weak the liberal human rights framework really is. It never seems to flinch when governments criticize it, but the moment an influential Westerner pushes back, it suddenly loses its nerve.

It likely also has to do with the difference between UK and US libel law.

In the US, true statements are never libelous (or slanderous). Further, since Rowling is a public figure, she would have to prove that Amnesty International acted with reckless disregard for the truth (with "actual malice").

In the UK, as far as I can tell, true statements can be libelous.

I suspect Amnesty International did the calculus of "How many people have already seen this? Will they keep circulating the tapes? How much will it cost us to defend this? Can we successfully defend it under UK law?" and decided that Streisand-effect-ing the report would be a better use of their time and money.

i don't disagree that rights-based campaigning is liberal and tends towards stasis, but libel law and its misuses in the uk are a genuine and well documented issue that has been used to financially destroy or harrass people ranging from investigative journalists to victims of sexual assault/harrassment - and particularly on the investigative front, the uk is well known for libel tourism where billionaires use its extremely loose definitions re. libel/slander & the burden of proof lying with the defendant to prove that they were reporting the truth, to shut down investigations into corruption and human rights abuses across the world. in that regard jkr is using a tool provided to her by the law, thru the services provided for the rich to protect their interests, and must be seen in that light. in amnesty's case, the question they face is whether or not their funding reserves will withstand being taken to court by a billionaire who has publicly encouraged all the named orgs to bring defamation suits in english courts. if carole cadwallader ended up on the hook for 1 million pounds in damages, despite a court ruling in her favour re. public interest, how much more so a case bankrolled by this much money?

What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?

It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.

My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict 😂

For third-world nations who have won their political independence at great cost and are still struggling to win their economical independence, for people who have been told from childhood "your country is shit, you can't never progress here, you must leave as soon as you can" either implicitly or explicitly by their own ruling classes and media, for people who have suffered the explotation of imperialism and have lost their prosperity, liberty and culture in the process, to love their own land and people is a revolutionary act.

To say "this is my country, I love it and I'm proud of it, and I want to make it better" is an act of courage and love that people from first-world nations whose national pride was build in conquest and imperialism can't comprehend. After living through entire generations where your country was considered, by both the imperial powers and your own local rulers, as little more than a source of raw materials, and then stop and say, "no, this is not true, we have history, culture and things to be proud of, we can make a better country, we can stand with the rest of the world as free people, as equals", to find love and solace in your own land, is something extraordinary.

psyhciatry really is like: "hmm you may or may not display behaviours I don't like and that society condemns, so you have a disorder. yes, if you behave in ways not sanctioned by the society you exist in you are disordered. Moral goodness is a biologic imperative".
