Music Major AUs
As a music major, I can confirm the accuracy of the following:
- It’s prime time for practice rooms and all of the good ones are taken except for that one – don’t you fucking dare, I will FIGHT you for it.
- I saw you sleeping on the couch in the lounge in the morning, but now it’s like 5 pm and you’re still here. Are you ok?
- Oh good an empty practice roo- HOLY SHIT. Why are you lying on the ground in a dark?!
- The theory professor makes no sense and you’re the star pupil. Teach me everything you know about theory and I will buy you anything you want from Starbucks. Grande. Venti. Frappuccino. Chai Tea Latte. You name it.
- I’m trying to study in the lounge and you’re blasting your music. I don’t care how much you love Mahler, have you ever heard of ear phones???
- I’m trying to schedule my recital, but you have the time/location I want. Ok, what do I have to sell you for that time slot/date.
- I agreed to help you with your music ed video project and now you’re trying to teach me trumpet and my god I am terrible at this instrument.
- You’re really cute and I may have done more than three casual walk-bys of your practice room. I’m on my sixth walk-by when we make eye contact. Oh shit.
- I don’t know you, but you grabbed me to help with your audition videos and wow, you’re really good and attractive…Oh crap, stop the camera now?
- You’re in the orchestra and I’m in the choir. I’ve had a crush on you all semester. I’m pretty sure you’ve caught me staring at the violin section one to many times.
- Amidst all the Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin I hear musical theater?!?!?!!? I race out of my practice room and go on a mad hunt until I find you and oh my god you’re playing my favorite show let’s be friends!
as a former music major I’m obligated to reblog this
As a current music major I’m guilty of quite a few of these.
I need a life that isn’t just about needing to escape my life.

Why should students play concerts? How does a music concert benefit a school?
because it’s probably the only time in their lives when they will get the opportunity to play in a concert organised by someone else and the only chance they will have to try out/learn how to handle “standing in front of a crowd of people and doing something they’ve practiced even though they are nervous”.
That leads on to the “building resilience” argument - they will learn that they can cope with things that they have planned and practiced going wrong (because something usually does no matter how well prepared you are) and also that audiences generally don’t notice (and will say they have done well anyway).
because it’s fun to show off something you’ve learnt and the fact that people listen to you playing and communicating your interpretation of the music makes the experience more memorable. How many of your lessons can you remember clearly, compared to the number of concerts?
What kind of an argument are you looking for here - “why should I, a music student, perform in a concert?” (in which case the level of the performer matters hugely as there are very different - but equally valid - reasons for every level of student, including why it matters that there’s a variety of standards, or “as a music teacher, what are the reasons for my students performing in concerts?”
A 53-year-old man was arrested in Michigan after allegedly firing his weapon at a 14-year-old boy who knocked on his door to ask for directions to his high school.
When 14-year-old Brennan Walker missed his bus Thursday morning, he decided to walk to his high school in Rochester Hills, Michigan. After he got lost, he knocked on a door hoping to get directions. Instead, he ended up running for his life from a man who allegedly fired his weapon at the black teenager.
Jeff Ziegler, a 53-year-old retired firefighter, was arrested and charged with assault with intent to murder and a felony charge of possessing a firearm for allegedly shooting at Walker.
Authorities on Thursday responded to a 911 call from a woman who said that a black male was trying to break into her house and that her husband had chased him into the yard, according to an incident report from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s deputies located Walker down the street from the woman’s house. The teen told authorities that he had missed his bus to Rochester High School and was walking to school when he got lost.
He knocked on a resident’s door to ask for directions. However, the woman who opened the door believed that Walker was trying to break into her house and rob her.
Her husband, Ziegler, then chased after Walker with a 12-gauge shotgun and fired a round towards the teen as he was running away from the house. No one was injured in the incident, the sheriff’s office said.

“DON’T ever think that you are somewhat underprivileged because you haven’t had the perfect background of schools and teachers. Even those who have had the BEST of everything have felt that they missed out on that one instructor who could have made the difference in their future. The ratio of career-fulfilled folks (from small-town USA) to their unfulfilled counterparts (from "big-time” cities and schools) is surprisingly in favor of those of us who didn’t have the “perfect” education and background. Small towns breed giants and leaders!“

STORY TIME:
I work in a decent sized, local, indie bookstore. It’s a great job 99% of the time and a lot of our customers are pretty neat people. Any who, middle of the day this little old lady comes up. She’s lovably kooky. She effuses how much she loves the store and how she wishes she could spend more time in it but her husband is waiting in the car (OH! I BETTER BUY HIM SOME CHOCOLATE!), she piles a bunch of art supplies on the counter and then stops and tells me how my bangs are beautiful and remind her of the ocean (“Wooooosh” she says, making a wave gesture with her hand)
Ok. I think to myself. Awesomely happy, weird little old ladies are my favorite kind of customer. They’re thrilled about everything and they’re comfortably bananas. I can have a good time with this one. So we chat and it’s nice.
Then this kid, who’s been up my counter a few times to gather his school textbooks, comes up in line behind her (we’re connected to a major university in the city so we have a lot of harried students pass through). She turns around to him and, out of nowhere, demands that he put his textbooks on the counter. He’s confused but she explains that she’s going to buy his textbooks.
He goes sheetrock white. He refuses and adamantly insists that she can’t do that. It’s like, $400 worth of textbooks. She, this tiny old woman, bodily takes them out of her hands, throws them on the counter and turns to me with a intense stare and tells me to put them on her bill. The kid at this point is practically in tears. He’s confused and shocked and grateful. Then she turns to him and says “you need chocolate.” She starts grabbing handfuls of chocolates and putting them in her pile.
He keeps asking her “why are you doing this?” She responds “Do you like Harry Potter?“ and throws a copy of the new Cursed Child on the pile too.
Finally she’s done and I ring her up for a crazy amount of money. She pays and asks me to please give the kid a few bags for his stuff. While I’m bagging up her merchandise the kid hugs her. We’re both telling her how amazing she is and what an awesome thing she’s done. She turns to both of us and says probably one of the most profound, unscripted things I’ve ever had someone say:
“It’s important to be kind. You can’t know all the times that you’ve hurt people in tiny, significant ways. It’s easy to be cruel without meaning to be. There’s nothing you can do about that. But you can choose to be kind. Be kind.”
The kid thanks her again and leaves. I tell her again how awesome she is. She’s staring out the door after him and says to me: “My son is a homeless meth addict. I don’t know what I did. I see that boy and I see the man my son could have been if someone had chosen to be kind to him at just the right time.”
I’ve bagged up all her stuff and at this point am super awkward and feel like I should say something but I don’t know what. Then she turns to me and says: I wish I could have bangs like that but my darn hair is just too curly.“ And leaves.
And that is the story of the best customer I’ve ever had. Be kind to somebody today.
Honestly I truly do aspire to be that old woman, and I work towards it each day that I can.
