Unpopular opinion time, but I feel like we need more neurotypical positivity right now. I’m seeing more and more posts that are like “Did you know that liking soft textures is actually a symptom of ADHD” and ridiculous stuff like that, and it seems like everyone I know under 25 either has ADHD/autism (officially diagnosed or self-diagnosed), or now suspect they have it because a post told them that a completely normal and universal human thing is a symptom. It’s an easy trap to fall into, I think, because it’s a badly defined spectrum of a disorder that presents in nebulous ways. And human brains really love to jump through hoops to relate to the things they hear, which is why those vague fake psychic readings still always feel personally relevant. (”I DO sometimes get insecure around people I don’t know very well, OMG, how is it so accurate?!”)

I just really feel like there’s more need to remind young people that you do not need a disorder to be unique and interesting. You don’t need a disability or a tragic backstory to be a compelling character. There are plenty of people in this world who are average in every way on paper, but as actual people are absolutely captivating. Just being you is enough.

(Also if you make a legitimate disorder into a hip but disposable trend it really doesn’t do the people with those disorders any favors.)
