Three things my three year old has taught me about life
1. Live in the moment. Each day is a gift. Take time to do the things you love. There is always time for an impromptu dance party. Jump in puddles, and make silly faces. Give hugs, sing for no reason. Try it, it’s fun! 2. Accept and express the way you feel. Whether you are angry, hurt, sad, or overjoyed, take a moment to allow those feelings to process. How often do you see an upset three year old compose himself and say, “I’m fine.”? I’ll place my bets on never. They will let everyone around them, and sometimes a couple blocks away as well, know that they are not happy. I’m not saying that I encourage my daughter to throw temper tantrums, but I realize they are a process of her learning to express herself. As we mature, our communication skill become a little more refined, or they should. Many of us tend to hide our emotions from those around us or even ourselves. Really feeling things causes us to be vulnerable. Vulnerability is scary and uncomfortable. Who enjoys feeling uncomfortable? Not me! I have learned, however, that a moment of discomfort in which I share how I am truly feeling about a situation is much better than the difficulty of running through a scenario over and over in my mind of how things “should have gone.” 3. Find your hero. Every kid has that bigger kid that they adore and want to be just like. “Sally has this,” or “Sally does that.” When do we lose that sense of admiration? Find a mentor, someone who can help you reach your goals and push you toward them. Don’t be afraid to admit you don’t know everything. No one does. We can learn something from everyone who crosses our path.
