2 Easy Methods to Peeling Garlic
1. Take the garlic clove and lay a knife sideways on top, then press the heel of your hand onto the flat of the knife until you hear a cracking sound...the garlic skin will peel straight off and your garlic will be lightly crushed, releasing the flavour.
2. If you are nervous about using the knife, want to get kids involved, or wish to peel a number of cloves at once, you can cut off either end of the clove, put it in an empty jar or container and shake vigorously, and when you open it back up the skin and fesh will have totally separated.
College Kitchen Cupboard Essentials
Advice for college students, or anyone cooking for themselves...there are some cupboard essential items that are worth buying in bulk, because you'll use them all the time, and they don't go off... prices based on Tesco prices, as that's a middle ground supermarket, so pretty average prices...
Salt and Pepper- you can get a kg of table salt for about 30p and black peppercorns with pepper grinder for £2, that will last for months.
Herbs/Spices- currently 3 pots for £2.50, I'd advise buying cumin, cayenne and smoked paprika for use in mince dishes like chilli, fajita spice mix, pasta sauces etc, but the Italian Seasoning is a great buy too for pasta, you only need a dash, they really make a difference to your dishes and last for ages.
Garlic and Onions- you can get 9 garlic bulbs for £1 in Tescos 3 for 2 offer and a kg of onions is only £1. These two are used as a base in almost all savoury dishes so they're a must.
Pasta- You can get huge 5kg bags, but even if you just buy 2 x1kg packs for £1.50, if a pasta serving size is 100g, that's 20 servings for £1.50 which isn't bad at all...even if you ate pasta every night, it would last you three weeks!
Olive or Vegetable oil- 1 litre for £1.50 will last for ages, if you use a tsp of oil for frying etc at the start of each dish that's about 200 dishes worth (1tsp=5ml)
Cans etc- tinned tomatoes, sweetcorn, passata, tomato paste etc which are often as cheap as 30p as used in so many dishes and are useful to make a simple and quick pasta sauce if you're running short of time.
