better late than never chapter 10 wip
sorry i swear it'll be out by tomorrow I'm just cleaning up the draft rn.
If you're unfamiliar, this is modern au todofam fic that focuses on dabi as a teenager and also theres some dabihawks and fuyumi and touya are twins. hero society= baseball. also rei and enji are going through a divorce rn
Touya was getting sick of driving. Driving to and from school used to be something Touya liked, but now that he was waking up much earlier in order to drive him and both his brothers to school, it was a lot less enjoyable. His car used to be a place to listen to music, and prepare himself for the day. Now, it was practically a zoo, with Natsuo's constant talking, and an occasional invasive question or blunt statement from Shoto.
But he really couldn't complain much. It's not like he had much else to do other than drive around. It’s part of the reason he got his driver's license in the first place.
Of course, he also got it with the prospect that it would grant him independence, and freedom from his family, but it also definitely had to do with feeling useless. It wasn’t a special talent by any means – Most other people his age were driving too, other than the overly ambitious ones who were pouring 100% of their focus into their extracurriculars, (e.g. Keigo and Fuyumi.) He just needed some kind of control over his life, he wanted to learn something that could make him feel useful in some way. Driving was the only thing that provided that for him. He considered drowning himself in his academics, but what's the point in that when he would always be second best to Fuyumi regardless. Fuyumi, who is already extremely busy with ballet and still manages to not only pass all her honors courses, but stay at the top of her class as well.
Touya helped Rei move into the new apartment about a week ago, and ever since then he has been showing up whenever he had the time, with just a quick call to Rei as heads up before he left. There were a few times that Natsuo tagged along, but this past week Shoto and Fuyumi have been too busy to join him.
The conversations with Rei were usually quiet in a very relaxing way. She wasn’t quiet because she was scared anymore, she was quiet because she was finally finding peace in her life.
Sometimes they would laugh and talk lightly together, and sometimes they needed to have serious conversations. But to Touya, it didn’t make any difference what kind of conversation they had, because time spent at Rei’s apartment served as a perfect escape from the tense, hostile environment that was Enji’s house.
They haven’t made any legal arrangements as far as the divorce went so far, but from what Rei has told Touya during his visits, they were coming soon. And based on how short-tempered Enji was acting lately, Touya was hopeful that the divorce might be going more in Rei’s favor than Enji would like.
But, Touya wasn’t really thinking about any of that as he drove to Keigo’s house. He couldn’t believe Keigo had the nerve to skip practice for this concert; Enji was going to be pissed regardless, but if he knew Keigo was missing baseball practice to be at a concert with Touya, the two of them would be dead. So naturally, Touya said he would be going to their moms house as usual. Obviously his father had no issue with Touya going to concerts, but if Enji knew his son would be going to a concert on the only night Keigo skipped practice the entire season? Yeah, that was bound to raise suspicion.
The lie seemed to work; when Touya went to leave, Enji reacted with his typical look of disapproval at the mention of visiting Rei, but his face showed no trace of suspicion.
Touya had been keeping up with Keigo over the phone, and showing up to his games as usual, but it had been a while since he actually went to his house. He used to go all the time, but when high school started and Keigo began practicing baseball more intensely, their near daily hangouts lessened. They also lessened when Keigo moved in with a new foster home that was much farther from Touya’s place than before. It used to be a walkable distance, and now it was about a 15 minute drive, which wasn't horrible, but when one of you has such a packed schedule and no drivers license – it's a lot less convenient.
Despite this, Touya still knew exactly where Kiego was living right now, but only because Keigo had directed him there a few times. When Touya watched Keigo’s games after getting his license, he always drove himself because he didn’t want to sit in the car with his dad for any longer than absolutely necessary – even if they were going to the same place. After the games, Keigo would hunt Touya down and ask for a ride to his block so they could walk around and talk. It worked out pretty well, because then Keigo could avoid Enji’s post-match scolding, and Touya could avoid talking to or even looking at his father throughout the whole thing. It was also nice because once they parked in Keigo’s neighborhood they could be authentic, talk freely, and get a real chance to catch up without worrying about who might hear them.
Touya pulled up to the ominous, skinny, two story house on the end of the street and honked twice to notify Keigo that he was here. Touya waited a few minutes in the car just listening to his music, wondering what the hell was taking Keigo so long.
His phone rang, Touya picked it up, knowing who it was already.
“The hell is taking you so long?”
“You have the shirt right?” Keigo asked, ignoring Touya’s question.
Touya faltered for a moment, before remembering the call he received at the ungodly hour of 6 am that morning. Keigo asked if Touya had a shirt he could borrow for the concert that night because he wasn't able to find any shirts in his wardrobe that ‘fit the vibe’. Touya just shoved a random shirt in his backpack before going to school because he knew he would forget to grab one later.
“Oh yeah, I have it in my bag. I’ll go bring it to you.” Touya moved to turn off the engine and open his door before being cut off by Keigo’s crunchy voice through the speaker.
“No, no – it’s fine, just stay there.” Keigo said quickly before hanging up.
What? Touya just looked at his phone for a minute in confusion before being interrupted by the sound of the door opening.
He turned to see Keigo in jeans, white sneakers, and a striped red shirt. Touya was a bit confused as he watched Keigo weave his way around the overgrown bushes that lined his house, but tried not to let it show on his face.
“Hey,” Keigo said as he climbed into the passenger seat.
“Hey,” Touya said, moving his foot to the brake so he could put the car in drive.
“Wait – do you have the shirt?”
“Yeah, I just told you that.” Touya stopped, looking at Keigo and trying to mask his confusion.
“Can I have it…?”
Oh.
“Oh right sorry,” Touya said, grabbing his backpack from the backseat and digging through it frantically, “Here,” he handed a black sequinned T-shirt over to Keigo.
“Thanks,” is all Keigo said before taking his own shirt off in one swift motion.
Touya felt his cheeks heat up as he drilled his eyes into the steering wheel in a way he hoped looked as casual as possible. He channeled all his focus into killing any thoughts before he could think them.
Touya cleared his throat, “You done?”
“Yeah.”
Touya shifted his gaze back to Keigo. He couldn’t help but notice the way the shirt hugged his shoulders and torso perfectly. It also surprisingly matched his jeans and seemed to change everything about his outfit.
It looked so good on Keigo. Much better than it looked on Touya, of course.
“What do you think?” Keigo asked, posing with his arms behind his head like an idiot.
“You’re stretching it out.” Touya said, shifting his car into drive and ignoring Keigo’s laughter.
