If a trans woman was playing the role of Lili Elbe, wouldn't she have had to get off her hormones to prepare for the role well in advance to look masculine for the beginning of the movie? I'm not trying to be rude, just trying to understand the film!

This is the excuse people always make for not casting trans actors - having to detransition. But the facts are:

Trans actors have detransitioned for roles before.

There are trans actors who have not physically transitioned at all, or who are midway through their medical transitions.

It’s up to the actor herself whether she chooses to audition for the role, knowing full well what it involves or doesn’t involves physically

A casting call that straight up requests men to play a woman is completely absurd and shows exactly how “the industry” feels about trans women - namely, that they’re men in dresses.

Never mind that they could use practical effects rather than forcing an actor to detransition. If they cast a cis man as a trans woman, they’re going to be using the makeup department, not forcing him to take hormones. And this particular movie had cast a cis woman (Nicole Kidman) in the role (http://www.punchdrunkcritics.com/2010/09/marion-cotillard-reteams-with-nicole.html), before recasting with a cis man, possibly in the hopes that it would make an Oscar win more likely after Jared Leto won an Oscar for being a cis man playing a trans woman. Getting really sick of cis people coming up with nonsensical arguments for why this is acceptable instead of just flat out admitting that they don’t think trans people know anything about being trans people.

Fantasy characters

On Saturday I received one of the biggest surprises of my life in the form of being given the first ever Emerging Artist award at CXC. It came with a gorgeous handmade glass word balloon and a cash prize of $7,000, which Jeff Smith explained was intended to help me continue making comics.

I plan to write more about my experience at the first CXC festival on the whole, but wanted to stop and acknowledge that moment and thank everyone who was involved in it coming together. Something I thought was particularly special was that it was given to me on the floor of the show, as being in a space where I’m selling comics is one of my favorite places to be. I will never forget it!

It’s been a while since I made any comics and I’ve had this idea for a while, so I gave it a shot because I think it’s sort of cute. Elf children. Yay.

Saffran/Esche’tu (cutest elf child), Nénuro (longest hair) and Asegedeche (prettiest scholar) are all mine.
