LOL yup. Tbh, I don’t entirely know how I feel about it. Inarguably, EVERYTHING about how they’ve gone about doing this has been unnecessary and fucked up, and like. Yikes. But on the other hand, there’s the fact that Kamala’s creators always intended her to be a mutant, and its literally just because of stupid film rights stuff that Marvel decreed nope, make her an Inhuman instead as part of our blatant push to make the Inhumans the new mutants in all but name.
Then there’s the fact that being an Inhuman has as of this point in the comics absolutely played a pivotal role in many of her stories and how she’s developed, but I would argue that outside of a couple stories, they’ve never really invested in making her all that connected to the greater Inhuman community? Like, she has other Inhuman friends but she could give a fuck about the Royal Family, its not like she’s ever lived in Attilan, etc.
And realistically, now that Marvel has the rights back to mutant characters/concepts, they’ve pushed the Inhumans so far into the background that while the Royal Family will always be around, Inhumans as a larger community/identity aren’t likely to be pushed to the foreground in any major way for yeeeeeears, if they ever are again at all.
Being an Inhuman DID work to Kamala’s advantage at the specific moment in time that she debuted, because the combination of Marvel’s push to make the Inhumans the new mutants at the same time as they were making a point to give new characters of color a high profile boost (ie Kamala debuting around the same time as Sam Alexander, as Miles being shifted over into the 616 universe, Amadeus Cho getting spotlight as half of the Hercules book during their dynamic duo era, etc)......like I think this indisputably worked together to give Kamala the rare kind of story focus & marketing focus that is CRUCIAL to helping new characters break out and cement their presence in an already crowded superhero landscape. And there was far less competition for story time when pushing the Inhumans, given how little they’d been expanded on before, than would have ever been true if she HAD debuted as a mutant.
But now that situation has completely flip-flopped, so in those respects, I do think that in the LONG-RUN, Kamala NOW being retconned as a mutant and integrated into the larger mutant community - while already cemented as a high profile character in her own right - does a lot more to ensure her longevity as a focal Marvel character than would be true if she remains an Inhuman (while Inhumans continue to dwindle in relevance).
So its like, I don’t HATE this move and think it can potentially benefit her character and presence in a lot of ways.....but I hate literally everything about how they’ve gone about making this move, and it makes me very leery that the potential for this to be a good thing for her character will actually be REALIZED.
