“Free will is a funny old thing, isn’t it John?”
i love when a character is very clearly going through their own shit badly and is able to be sympathised with yet they are also being awful to others and hurting people who don't deserve it, and the narrative is showing how they got here but not letting them off the hook for being cruel just because they are hurting.
i dont like ☝ what happens when you introduce this type of character to a large fandom
especially if she is a woman
I’m sick and tired of found families we need more found toxic workplace environments
the only real good ship dynamic: tragic hero x person with genre awareness
oh to walk blindly into ruin and have someone who would follow, even with their eyes open, because they cannot bear to let go of your hand
petplay except i have rabies so you have to euthanize me
mag 152 a gravedigger's envy helen/jon "when does the eye make me monstrous" scene you will always be famous to me
free my girl she did all that but can you fucking blame her
free my girl she did do crimes but this chargesheet only talks about her being mean to a man which, frankly, is not a convictable offence
the thing about the magnus archives is that the fanart is more reliably loyal to jon’s almost entirely fanon physical appearance than it is to the canon fact that martin is a fat guy
Lowkey we should create a giant manmade blood device to attract ticks away from humans and its a giant blood container that pumps like a heart and emits phermones that attract ticks and mosquitos and we should call it Mother
something about. Annabelle ties Martin up to maintain the illusion of him as a victim even for Jon
The levels here...
It's the mindgame, of course. Reminding Jon of his very first encounter with the supernatural, with the Web, with the victim he couldn't save. Will you save him this time? When it's someone you love? Does the love matter?
And then it's the psychosexual shit, the damsel in distress, all wrapped up in the fact that it's an act -- Annabelle didn't capture Martin, he walked there willingly. That puts the situation in exact opposition to A Guest for Mr. Spider, whose victims walk there unwillingly.
But of course the Web's whole deal is to make you wonder: is it willing? Is it willing if it's inevitable? How much choice did Martin have? Did Jon have? Did Annabelle have? Are they all just playing their fated roles? Could they have done anything differently?
Here, Annabelle says: here's the tropes you decided to play. Here's what you think you are, what you think each other are. You'll remember this in your last moments at the end of the world: not this exactly, but this feeling. Don't you want to cut him loose? Don't you want to save him?
And the whole time she's winking at us -- the invisible nearly omniscient listeners, the watchers without eyes -- because of course everything is a cheeky little step up towards the inevitable domino fall down; because it's a story. Here's your players. Here's their roles. Look, I've bundled them all up for you.
Don't you want a satisfying ending?
"martin fell in love with an eldritch horror" no he didnt. that would have been based. martin fell in love with his asshole boss who hated him, which is much worse. also if you had a crush on someone unatainable for years and they finally liked you back dont tell me youd turn them down just cause they happened to have turned into a monster that feeds on fear in the interim. even if you werent into that which martin totally was
Tim Stoker has genre awareness more so than anyone else. He’s completely aware that he’s in a horror tragedy and, as soon he realizes he can’t leave, he knows how his story ends. Martin, on the other hand, has character archetype awareness. He casts Jon as ‘tragic hero’ in like, season 2. He also realizes that his own archetype is ‘unassuming nice guy’ and uses this to his advantage against Peter Lucas.
Me watching people completely fall for the front a fictional character is putting up
S4 Martin Blackwood like “I can accept ‘it’s better for everyone if I just walk to my death in a fear domain’ but I draw the line at me being important to the narrative”
really love how everyone finished TMA and immediately went “I need to be the Head Archivist at the Magnus Institute, London.” How was that the takeaway. That is absolutely not the point made in those 200 episodes. Me too tho
hunting Daisy in s5 being Basira’s personal hell is insane to me
