the information could have easily been passed to barbara through text, but margot thought it’d be more appropriate if she met the girl in person to show her what she had found. she texted barbara later that day, telling her to meet her at the starbucks down the street from where she worked. with a file containing details of the adoption in hand, margot hesitantly opened the door to the coffee shop and stepped inside.
When Barb had gotten the text from Margot, a few emotions had run through her mind. At first it was excitement, the thought of having a mother and knowing just why she was given up. Then came the nervousness, of wondering if her Dads would find out, or why Margot wanted to meet in person. Then came the anger at the birth mother, cursing her for having to do this in the first place. Nonetheless, here Barb was, fidgeting in her seat at the Starbucks, playing around with the frappucino she’d ordered while waiting for Margot. She looked up as the door opened, and sighed in relief at the sight of the woman, waving her over to where she was sitting.
“ Oh, Nancy Drew games ?? I don’t do that kind of thing anymore. I’m not a child, after all. You could read, write poetry, maybe dye your roots so your hair doesn’t look like a faded mess. Anything else you want to hear ?? ”
“Well you’re missing out. They’re not just for kids y’know. If you don’t do things just cause you think they might be childish, then you’re gonna miss out on a ton of shit. Wow, I like the way my hair looks, thanks. Don't need prissy little princesses to tell me how to look.”
“Yeah sounds like it probably is the axle, I’ll have a look.”
“Thanks! This car is practically my baby, so please make sure she can work properly.”
“Well I guess I could take a look and give you a quote on how much it will cost. Where are the noises coming from?”
“Thank you! The noises are kind of coming from the back two tires? When I drive they kind of make clanking sounds. My Dad told me it might be the axle or something, but I’m not sure.”
“Can I help? We are closed you know.”
“Oh. Sorry, I didn’t see your sign. My car’s been making some really worrying noises lately, and seeing as how its my main form of transportation, I kinda need it to not break down on me. I don't have that much money though.”
“Nancy Drew games, huh. Can’t say I’ve ever played, but I might be too old for them now. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to come up with anything better as a distraction for your young, playful mind.”
“They’re good! And yeah, you might be just a touch on the too grown-up side to play them. Probably would be worried about all the times that Nancy defies death. Awh, really? Nothing better for me to do?”
Who’s going to want me? My own mother didn’t even want me.
