Some days (most days) I think OFMD fandom really did Anne Bonny and Mary Read dirty.

I have seen so much fandom hate about them being “stereotypical crazy lesbians” and “poor representation” and how they “despise each other” after we begged and begged for interesting woman characters.

The stereotype I always see and am sick of is the de-fanged, sexless married lesbians with everything figured out and three pit bulls acting as surrogate mothers to the show or fandom faves.

Anne Bonny and Mary Read were not stereotypes, or if they were, they were an unexpected stereotype usually reserved for complex, straight, married couples, and I find that fascinating.

OFMD said “Hey, ever seen the first episode of Northern Exposure where the wife keeps trying to kill her husband because she can’t stand that he never pays attention to her but also doesn’t want him to leave, and it turns out the husband was ignoring his wife because any time he tried to say anything, she’d fight him and make him feel dumb so he eventually decided it was just easier to say nothing? And once they took five minutes to admit their problems, they realized they still loved each other and they’d been fighting over nothing? We did that with lesbians who are pirates.”

Yeah they were fucked up. Yeah, things were bad. But don’t tell me they didn’t love each other. They loved each other until it nearly killed them. They loved each other but thought they couldn’t or shouldn’t talk about their discomfort with their living situation because pirates don’t do that, so they devolved to the most fucked up hatesex possible to try to express their pain while still trying to crawl inside each other and make a space for themselves so they would never be apart. And all it took was a couple of vulnerable, heartfelt admissions for them to burn their unhappy situation to the ground (literally)and remember why they married each other in the first place.

And you have to ask yourself, why? Why did they exist in the story? Why were they written like that? Not to make Ed and Stede look better by comparison. No, they are meant to warn Ed and Stede: This could have been you. This can and still will be you if you don’t learn your lesson now. And on the flip side, Mary and Ann are like Ed and Stede. They can learn the same lessons. They can heal and talk and find their way through together. They’re just going to be bloodthirsty pirates about it is all.

Make of that what you will.

A proposal

Sometimes, in fandom, we just want to write id-tastic fic that rolls around in tropes that might be viewed as problematic. But we don’t want to address the problematic side of things in this particular fanwork; we just want to roll around and wallow.

It is considered courteous to give readers a heads-up via use of AO3 tags. I propose a tag that signals that a given fanwork is for rolling around, not giving a measured evaluation of anything. The MCU has carved out a space for this sort of fic with the “HYDRA Trash Party” tag, for which I commend them. Trash Party is a bit too specific to cover all of the ground I’m thinking of here, though; I propose “Dead Dove: Do Not Eat.”

For those of you not familiar with Arrested Development, Michael Bluth finds a paper bag in the freezer labeled “Dead Dove: Do Not Eat.” He opens the bag, finds a dead dove, and reacts as follows:

The “Dead Dove: Do Not Eat” tag would essentially be a “what it says on the tin” metatag, indicating “you see the tropes and concepts tagged here? they are going to appear in this fic. exactly as said. there will not necessarily be any subversion, authorial commentary condemning problematic aspects, or meditation on potential harm. this fic contains dead dove. if you proceed, you should expect to encounter it.”

my final paper for my CS degree was literally "how can we algorithmically optimise for the fastest possible circumnavigation route on commercial flights?", which incidentally required me to adopt a very good working knowledge of what flight options are available at what times (and also led to me accidentally memorising several hundred airport codes)
