the intersection of power and privilege, race and class, gender and sexuality, all of these things are what actually make a good vampire story, imo. and you can't explore one without addressing the others.... like im simply not interested otherwise. i love a sympathetic queer vampire as much as the next person but the vampire is such a versatile metaphor, you have to be willing to engage with it in its other interpretations, too, including vampirism as class, colonialism, and white supremacy

#and you have to read and understand the bigotry within the originals! you cant ignore it!#grisping my laptop. i am very passionate about this topic.

but if I were to say that I don’t think vampires inherently and universally represent queerness and that if that’s the only way you engage with any story containing a vampire then a lot of very important messages are going to go straight over your head? i would be killed to death.

ESPECIALLY an issue when vampires very explicitly represent fear of outsider immigrant non-white invaders! Dracula can absolutely be read with a queer lens but we cannot let our desire for ~spooky gay stuff~ blind us to the very real xenophobia, antisemitism, and orientalism present in a LOT of the foundational media in vampire history! nor the racism present in modern vampire stories!!!

#this is why so many of the 'queer retellings' suck btw #the (white) people writing them either don't notice or are too afraid to grapple with the racism and xenophobia inherent in the originals #ignoring how vampirism was used to depict the colonial anxieties at the time just leads to them being replicated again and again #i just talked abt something similar a few days ago with sapphic retellings #reclaiming vampirism as 'feminine rage' or to explore women's sexuality falls flat #when you only ever write about rich white women getting to do it.#particularly when you have servants/working class characters who are suffering in the background of your heroine's gothic estate #and it's like. well it could be interesting if done on purpose. vampirism as colonialism and classism and white supremacy.#but they never do it on purpose. it's just individualistic liberal white feminism. unfortunately #and so you have vampirism as class and/or white privilege that goes completely unexplored in the text #and they can't meaningful write or engage with characters of color being vampires. bc again they'd have to grapple with the racism #& they ignore the implications of their white characters feeding on them too
