absolutely nothing funnier than the umbrella academy social media team spending the last year hyping up the sparrows only to kill most of them off before the end of the season, and introducing christopher, who we thought was going to be this really complex and mysterious new character but instead they said nah boy’s just a cube innit

I realize one brilliant thing about Five is the way he smiles when he's really pissed off. It's a blindingly stressed, unbelievably pissed off, I'm-on-my-last-thread-here kind of smile, with so much rage and frustration packed into an impeccably polite, smooth package. It's a customer service smile.

And the way he does it, just a flash of something charming and smooth and unsettlingly at odds with the intense angry words coming from his mouth, is a very adult thing. Adults smile like that. They talk to each other like that in the workplace all the time. Adults do that thing where they rage at you, the fury building, and then end off with a I'm-being-professional-here flash of a smile. Adults do that barely-suppressed-rage thing because most children and teenagers haven't learnt to get a grip on anger. Adults are just hypocrite enough to do that. And that's why it looks so bizarre on Five's teenage face. And that's why it is such a brilliant, in-character touch. I adore it.
