obsessed with stories where you can never go home
you can never go home because you fell asleep for a thousand years and when you woke up and returned there, your society had changed, your house had fallen and all of your friends were dead. you can never go home because you made a choice and were shattered into pieces and your home was destroyed in your wake. you can never go home because someone took you and changed you against your will and although your home is the same, the person who belonged there is dead. you can never go home because you committed a crime and your family expelled you and even as they extend a hand of reconciliation, you will never forgive them. you can never go home because your home was a person and someone murdered her and now you drift and grieve to the point of insanity. you can never go home because you never knew your sister but she gave you every opportunity you have and now she's dead and your parents see nothing but her in your eyes.
Shoutout to trans people in kink.

You are all valid and valued in this community. You deserve to feel safe and appreciated. If you ever need to talk, my messages and asks are open.
Just to reiterate that reblog from a while ago about ffnet dying and how one day probably soon we're gonna blink and it'll just be gone:
I'm trying to make backups of the few things I'm not too embarrassed to keep from Way Back When (because I'm also like 4+ computers beyond what I originally wrote that shit on and some of it got lost in data migrations)
And guys
The password recovery is NON FUNCTIONAL.
That site is circling the drain, so if you've got stuff on there you want to keep, go save it now.
This has been a PSA from your local digital archivist/ fandom old.
Don't know who might end up seeing this, but fichub.net can convert fics off of fanfiction.net into downloadable formats. I've seen a ton of people talking about all these complicated work-arounds to screenshot or even copy/paste entire fics in order to save them before the site goes down, but this is wayyyy easier!! It seems like a lot of fic conversion websites don't actually handle stuff from ff.net all that well, so it took me a bit of digging before I found one that works-- but this one does, it's extremely easy to use, and it supports EPUB, MOBI, PDF, and Zipped HTML formats! It even preserves all the fic's metadata and formatting, and you don't have to download it chapter by chapter, you just copy/paste the fic's url into the search bar, export it, and then choose your preferred format and download the whole thing in one shot. Easy peasy!
I've reblogged posts like this a few times over the past month, and I want to add: please backup any comments you particularly love! If the site goes down or breaks badly or one of a dozen other options, those could be gone.
so i moved from patreon to ko-fi because, frankly, i'm sick and tired of them disabling it so i'm going there. you can donate one time if you really want to but make sure you're able.

so maybe ko-fi isn't as attractive, fine fine, i've reactivated my patreon account:

are you ever gonna update your fics? 😅
this is a fair question... it will be done! 😤 you're amazing for your patience with me, by the way! i'll likely update them more often once i'm happy with a manuscript and it's in the query trenches (aiming for jan-feb 2022) so i can distract myself.
oh, hey guys. i'm still alive! i'm letting you guys know that:
the BIPOC anthology i'm a part of is officially on pre-order (along with the cover reveal)! you can choose between the paperback, ebook, or audiobook (or if you have the means, get all three)!
because of the supply chain problems, the release date is pushed to may 2022, but if you had donated to the Kickstarter, you will receive those copies in April, as scheduled.
thank you for your eternal patience. i really should update here again, honestly, because, without you guys and your kind comments, i wouldn't be here today.
(ps: the servant prince is still very much active but though i'd like to announce it under better circumstances, i'm going to rewrite and try to get it published through traditional means. i'll likely post what's going on eventually, but let me enjoy this cover reveal)

When They Saw Us, They Saw the Dead: A BIPOC Short Story Anthology
hey, so there's a reason why i haven't updated this tumblr in forever.
i've been working on my author career (also corona-19 really catapulted a lot of other things) and... i've been accepted as part of a BIPOC short story anthology (as L.C. Star)
here the summary of my short story:
During the Aeon of Twilight Passing, necromancers and those connected to the dead are put to death in an effort to appeal to the humans who are coming to Emain. Selena Thorton, a 16-year-old witch who channels and communicates with the dead, must escape if she were to live as the last remaining member of her family. However, she eventually meets a young priest named Adam Willis who happens to be on his travels. The problem, both of their ghosts still haunt them even after they leave Emain.
and we have a kickstarter! currently, still don't have an agent yet, but when it's time, you will know. in any case, this will not just extend to the anthology i'm part of but two other authors as now! please support if you can (or reblog)

HEY
For all you WONDERFUL FIC WRITERS who made the mistake of following me

every day i am percieved™️
There is a reason for this though!
The original tweet summarizes it pretty well. Fanfic tends to be popular among certain types of neurodivergent people (aka people most likely to read excessively as a child, and have burnout as an adult) for the same reasons that we tend to hyperfixate--neurochemical signaling (I hope I'm using that phrase correctly). What I mean is, for people who are really dependent on changes in dopamine/serotonin/neurotransmitter levels, who have low levels or wonky neural reward systems (perhaps the most common types of neurodivergence)...people like us rely on dependable external sources of those neurochemicals. In order to function, we spend a lot of our free time trying to level out our brain chemistry using things that can reliably bring us a steady stream of joyful moments (rewards) without costing too much of the mental effort that is already in short supply.
significantly: the investment of reading has to be balanced with a steady "return on investment"--and this return has to start fairly quickly. because again, we don't have a lot of attention/energy to invest on tiring things. we have perpetual "low batteries" in that regard.
that doesn't mean these stories are “simple,” or that they lack complexity or value--only that the reward has to come in short regular intervals, and it has to have a low "upfront cost.” which is why fanfic stories are so perfectly formulated for neurodivergent readers--they are often beautifully written, but skip a lot of the upfront costs (of introducing new characters, of world-building, of getting the audience emotionally connected to the story elements).
the nature of fanfiction is that the reader has a pre-existing relationship with this world and these characters. that--combined with the shorter average length of fics--means that fan fics very quickly start "rewarding" the reader in a way that traditional fiction struggles to. that's not a bad thing! and maybe it's something more traditionally published writers should be paying attention to.
Fanfic, as a genre, has been uniquely helpful and accessible to many neurodivergent readers who would otherwise struggle to immerse themselves in stories. I'm glad so many of you have found a way to love and enjoy reading again! The important thing is that you are spending time inside stories you love--the way those stories are published or presented to the world is just one detail.
This is the best explanation I could come up with for why it takes me so long to do updates sometimes when, at other times, I’m typing them up like clockwork.
also this:
facts.
I’m like this with my original fiction, too.
You guys forgot this one:

If you're an artist and a member of the lgbt/queer community
I'm interviewing people on the intersection between personal style, the art they create, and being lgbt for a costume design class I'm in and I want to interview you!!! It can be done over email/DM on tumblr.
Things I'd need:
Some questions answered (I can send you the questions before you agree to do it if you're nervous about being blindsided!)
1 or 2 photos of you in outfits you'd normally wear (if you don't want your identity given, your face can be blurred or cropped!)
1 or 2 photos of the kind of art you do (OPTIONAL) (can be digital, sculpting, photography, illustration, ANYTHING)
Don't be afraid to message me or reply to this post if interested!!! Even if we've never talked before, I want to hear about your experiences!!!
And if you have followers this can apply to please signal boost! It would mean a lot.
