Exploring Rejected Mating Bonds and Non-Mated Relationships in the ACOTAR:
Delving into the prospect of rejected mating bonds and non-mated relationships in future ACOTAR books has sparked my interest. While this exploration might not be everyone's favoured avenue... humour me for a moment. I wanted to consider how three particular pairings—Helion+LOA, Jurian+Vassa, and Eris+Mor—stand out as potential candidates for this unconventional narrative.
LOA+Helion: Maternal Love Prevails that of a Mating Bond
Elain + Lucien headcanon:
Papa Archeron carved a wooden ring for Lucien to give to Elain.
Our Valkyrie and Shadowsinger sharing a perfect kiss (or almost kiss) by the talented @crisolcrowling💋
How it feels some days…
ACOSF: SJM introduces two characters who serve as perfect parallels for the last two unmated/single members of the Inner Circle.
Antis: No. No. No. Sunshine girl won’t end up with her mate sunshine boy. Clearly, the author known for fated mates won't be producing any more books centered around fated mates.
ACOTAR fandom discussing the next book:
Me: I think Gwynriels book is next...
I keep going back and forth of whose book is next, but something is telling me Eluciens book is gonna be the last of the series...
Elucien x Bridgerton Quotes
One of my favorite scenes in Bridgerton is the confrontation between Anthony and Kate in Season 2. It feels SO Elucien coded I have adapted it to fit Elain and Lucien.
Elain: I do not understand. Why are you suggesting this? All along, you have been intent on helping my sister as their emissary, and now you intend to cast her aside. Why? And do not talk to me of other opportunities, for we both know you do not have those. So, tell me, what has she done? Lucien: She has done nothing. It is you. You have made this job impossible.
Elain: But I have kept my distance.
Lucien: And it is not far enough! Do you think that there is a corner of this world that I could travel to far away enough to free me from this torment? I am a gentleman. My mother raised me to act with honor, but that honor is hanging by a thread that grows more precarious with every moment I spend in your presence. You are the bane of my existence. And the object of all my desires. Night and day, I dream of you. And what I...Do you even know all the ways a lady can be seduced? The things I could teach you.
Elain: I did not ask for this mating bond. Hiding from my sisters. To be plagued by these feelings. Being driven to distraction every time you enter the room.
Lucien: Then you agree. It is unsupportable.
Elain: Impossible.
Lucien: If I continue serving as Night Court emissary, it will bind me and you together, and I will spend every day wanting you, dreaming of you, dreading the day when my last thread of honor finally snaps. Is that the future that you want for us?
Elain: [exhales deeply]
I am loving this concept. I’m having way too much fun.
ACOTAR x Brigerton Cross Over Part. 2
(Gwynriel ed.)
✨ 🩵🦇💙
I just couldn't help myself. This scene just gave me such gywn x azriel vibes (Queen Charlotte Episode 6, Netflix Time stamp: 07:00). It was too fun.
So if you take this transcript with the sound bite/clip (YT below)…
Gwyn: You seem more yourself. You look better. Do you... Do you feel better? Azriel(Az): You should not have come. Gwyn: I was most happy to come shadowsinger. Az: No. Gwyn: I am so sorry. I should have come sooner. Do not fear. I shall remain by your side... Az: No. Berdara. Listen to my words. You should not have come. I do not want you here. Gwyn: Azriel. Az: Go back to the library or the house of wind, please. Do you hear me? I said, "Go back to the library." That is where you live. That is where you belong. Go. I do not want you. I want never to see you. Leave. (Shouts) Get out! I order you! (B/c she is under his command as spymaster or sm?? Lol) Gwyn: No. No, Az. Az: Gwyn! Gwyn: You cannot force me away. I will not go. Az: I command it! Go! Gwyn: I will stay! I command it. Az: Please, Gwyn. Please go. Gwyn: No. Az: Berdara, you're not listening to me. Gwyn: I am. I have heard that you wish I had not come. That you want me to go. That you do not want to see me. Az: Berdara Gwyn: What I have not heard is that you do not love me.
ACOTAR x Bridgerton Cross Over??
When I watched this scene from Bridgeton I couldn’t help but picture Elain and Lucien
Lucien: "That is what happens when one burns for someone who does not feel the same!"
Elain: "It is you I cannot sacrifice." "I burn for you"
Just imagine Lucien:
“Everything I told the was true. I cannot stop thinking of you. From the mornings you ease, to the evenings you quiet, to the dreams you inhabit… my thoughts of you never end. I am yours, Elain. I have always been yours.”
Mr. Fire in my veins Vanserra
Not the whole scene but you get the point...
The Echoing Beat of Sorrow
Pairing: Elain x Lucien (Elain centered)
Summary: One shot of Elain's perspective through Ch 15 of ACOWAR and Ch 65 of ACOMAF. Elain's internal conflict and dialogue regarding the trauma from the cauldron and Feyre and Lucien's return to the Night Court following their escape from the Spring Court. (idk how to do this... sorry).
Word Count: 1.3k
Warnings: Canon compliant trauma and violence. Contains and explores concepts/ themes related to trauma response (depersonalization/derealization/dissociation).
A/n: This is what my brain comes up with in the middle of the night, when instead of sleeping, my mind is contemplating and theorizing. Not a writer, and never will claim to be writer. Rather, this is an attempt (at best) to capture the internal turmoil and emotions I imagine Elain might be experiencing. It serves as nothing more than an outlet for my introspections and speculations about her character. I also used "echo" way too much.
If you think Az and Elain are not going to have banters then you didn't realise what sjm did with the almost kiss and gift return in Azriel's bc.
Lol yeah she gave it back… and then he regifted it immediately. They are not going to have banter about this… it’s embarrassing enough for Elain and she’s hurt that she was again rejected, he called it a mistake. This is over.
And then AFTER (and after their precious BC banter) we get the Gwynriel banter, the challenge, the amusement😮💨, and Elain and Az are never seen near each-other again. I wonder why that is
What SJM did with the almost kiss and Azriel’s whole POV and all that he revealed about the situation in his conversation with Rhys is just how toxic this pair is. How Azriel is fixated on his jealousy of Lucien, how Elain to him represents an idea he has been searching for his entire life, what he really wants is a mating bond, a proof that he is not damaged goods, that he deserves love, not actually her as Elain. He can’t wrap his head around WHY Lucien is worthy of this and not him, when these two characters share so many similarities and he knows it. A true endgame SHOULD want HER not because of what she represents, but for who she is. And no, just because he figured out her powers doesnt mean he understands her, in fact the opposite is true.
Anyway, at best we will get a scene where Elain tells Az she wasn’t a mistake and he apologizes. There is no banter to be had here. She gave the necklace back, she has no say on it anymore, give her more credit, she’s not an immature little girl (elriels do love to infantilize Elain, tho)
Stop trying to make something happen. Let it rest. You’re welcome to go through my other posts on this topic, since you seem like you want to read about this. Good day!
ACOWAR set up an Elain+Lucien Book
ACOWAR is Elucien coded. This book lays out all the major plot points, characters, and powers that will shape the relationship between Elain and Lucien. As I revisited ACOWAR, I couldn't help but notice a ton of textual evidence hinting at a final pairing between them.
For those who disagree that Lucien demonstrates any traits that correlate to a mating bond, I encourage you to actually look at Lucien’s behavior and actions through the ACOWAR novel. And if you are not interested in re-reading the novel, that’s okay I brought receipts.
This analysis will provide compelling evidence of the Elucien connection and illuminate how ACOWAR lays the groundwork for their future storyline. Below are the main areas that will be explored, each accompanied by corresponding headers.
Early Mate Behavior
Lucien’s introspection and selflessness
Primal mate behavior and the BOND BONDING
Parallels between their “souls” and characters
Lucien’s Devotion to Elain
The Internal conflict regarding bond
Future plot/story
And for good measure: Amren thinking Lucien is also Hot AF (ACOWAR edition)
Freud would have a field day with how SJM writes Rhysand and his mom. Rhys giving Feyre the dresses his mom made HUNDREDS of years ago? Rhys' mom giving her *wedding ring* to a blood thirsty weaver in some weird ass cottage to make her future daughter in law get or die trying? gives boy mom (derogatory)
Freud would've been so happy to read about Rhys orgasming at the picture of his son? Or something like that. I don't pay attention to so much he does
Maybe its just me...
But if my romantic interest spent more time planning a snowball fight rather than considering anything beyond their sexual fantasies about me. Despite staring at my sleep powder for a year, all they could conjure up were thoughts revolving around my "breasts" and "sex," without any meaningful gestures. Said "this was a mistake" to my face without any explanation. Referred to me as the "the third" sister. Threaten to murder my mate, despite my aversion to violence, and harm to them would inflict immense pain and distress. Afterwards, proceeding to promptly re-gift a present intended for me within a mere 24-hour period and then completely avoided any interaction... My opinion and interest in them would likely change.
but that's maybe just me...
(Typically, I aim to offer a more critical analysis of the text, but in this instance, I just needed to put this somewhere)
If Mor didn’t think Az giving Elain Truth-teller was a big deal, considering she was too busy admiring a necklace as she said it, I guess it’s not as big of a deal as everyone else makes it out
Antis always try to twist anything that doesnt support their ship it’s so entertaining lol
Let’s look at what the actual ✨Canon✨text says here…
Azriels Best friend and High Lord both point out how he has never let anyone else not even them touch it and they are shocked but “it’s not a big deal?!” If this wasn’t a big deal SJM wouldn’t have made such a emphasis on the actual importantance of the fact Azriel lent Tt to Elain… but she did…
SJM is the one who made it a big deal and romanticized this scene. Not us 🤷♀️
Considering Mor has the power of truth, I’d say her opinion would matter more than two who doesn’t ✌️
Also, it's pretty self-explanatory. Elain refused Cassian's knife. This is a war where anything can happen, and anyone is in danger. This is also after Elain was taken by Hybern, and Azriel again only stepped in after Cassian's initial volunteering to help was denied or shot down.
He obviously doesn't want anything bad to happen to her, he just fucking saved her. And Azriel says he's not using it that day. I imagine no one touched it because when can Rhys and Cassian recall the last time someone was in need of protection in their presence? They're all fae. They're used to growing up around people with magic. Mor herself is an accomplished warrior. When would Az ever need to lend her Truth-Teller? Or anyone, for that matter? Nesta let Cassian tell her all about what self-defense skills she needed in ACOWAR. She picked up a blade without hesitation when facing Hybern. Nesta is not afraid to use a weapon. Feyre trained with Cassian and Azriel before the war. Feyre is not afraid to pick up a weapon. But Elain is in this moment. She needs extra reassurance. She needs someone familiar to tell her this weapon will protect her. This moment is obviously significant, but that doesn't mean Azriel wouldn't give someone else Truth-Teller if he felt they needed it. It means he recognizes other people's needs, especially in life-or-death moments. Elain happened to be the one in need.
I feel like jumping into the discussion, so to add to your point:
in this passage SJM also uses repetition, parallelism and italicization to emphasize the fact the dagger was given back:
""She gave it back," I amended, failing to block out the image of the black blade piercing through the King of Hyberns throat. But Elain had given it back- had pressed it into Azriel's hands after the battle, just as he had pressed it into hers before. And than walked away without looking back."
This deliberate use of literary devices serves to highlight the weight of Elain's choice. Despite those who object to an Elain and Lucien pairing for its perceived impact on her autonomy, it's crucial to acknowledge Elain's agency in these moments. Thus, this deliberate repetition and emphasis draw the reader's attention to the act of giving back the dagger, emphasizing its importance within the narrative. The use of italics on 'had' serves as a narrative tool to heighten the impact of this moment, amplifying its emotional resonance and underscoring its significance in the character dynamics and overarching storyline.
Elain is a multifaceted character with her own agency and autonomy, deserving of recognition and respect for her individuality. Her decisions, whether they align with Azriel's desires or not, stem from her own experiences, values, and emotions. Hence, it is noteworthy to acknowledge instances when Elain chooses to return the dagger and necklace, as these actions reflect her independent decisions. By prioritizing Azriel's perspective over Elain's agency, we risk diminishing her character and reinforcing outdated narratives that prioritize male characters' viewpoints over those of female characters. Elain's agency should be affirmed and celebrated in its own right, independent of any romantic or interpersonal dynamics. I find that many discussions surrounding Elain's relationships overlook her potential narrative contributions or present unrealistic expectations for the progression of the plot.
Elucien DOES NOT ruin the three x three symmetry, actually, and here's why:
This is a variation of the Death of Koschei the Deathless, in which three sisters marry three kings, one of the Moon, the Wind, and the Sun.
Considering Rhys is the High Lord of the Night Court, and owns the Moonstone Palace, it seems pretty apparent to me that Rhys is the Moon King. And his mate is Feyre.
Cassian is an Illyrian who is born hearing the song of the wind, loves Illyrian culture per ACOFAS, is called the Prince of Bastards, and lives at the House of Wind, it's safe to say that he's the Wind King. And his mate is Nesta.
And Azriel is...
Oh. Wait.
So it's not three brothers three sisters, and yet it still maintains the three symmetry.
Because Lucien means light, he's the son of the High Lord of the Day Court, presumably the heir as his only son, and likely will have access to whatever palace Helion resides in once his heritage is revealed. And his mate is Elain, whose name also means light, who craved sunshine in her darkest moment, and who is often represented by flowers, which benefit from sunlight.
Hmm.
Intreresting.
In ACOMAF (the bonus chapter), Nesta kicked him in the balls then told Cassian to send someone else the next time they needed updates. And that if he were the one to show up again she'd scream loud enough for the servants to come running.
In ACOMAF, Cassian was not Nesta's choice.
In the first 1/2 of ACOWAR, Nesta repeatedly turned down Cassian's attempts to train her and told him to stay the hell away from her.
In the first 1/2 of ACOWAR, Cassian was not Nesta's choice.
When Nesta and Cassian were facing death at the kings hands, her actions clearly told a different story when she threw her body over his.
In the second half of ACOWAR, Cassian seemed to be Nesta's choice.
