Scottish Slang for Scottish Characters
I’ve seen these going around but they’ve always been England focused, so here’s one for Scottish characters.
1. Bloody - Damn. Socially acceptable to use, some of my teachers use it, and my gran does too. You can’t use this enough.
2. Arse - ass but more derogatory. You wouldn’t say this to your grandparents, generally. Parents, it depends who you are.
3. Fiver - £5. Everyone says this all the time.
4. Tenner - £10. Ditto fiver.
5. Quid - £1. Ditto tenner.
6. Grand - £1000. Obviously lesser said than fiver unless you’re Ed Sheeran or someone but people normally say this.
7. A Ned (Non Educated Delinquent)- i think Americans call them townies??
12. Cock-up - fuck up. (Well, that was a cock-up)
13. Cakehole - mouth. IE: Shut your cakehole!
14. Bloke - Man. Most people say this.
15. Knackered - tired. “I’m off to bed, me, i’m knackered.” the K is silent.
16. Pear-shaped - gone wrong. “It’s all gone a bit pear-shaped.”
17. Local - nearby pub. “I’m off for a drink at the local.”
18. Fit - hot. “He’s fit, him.”
19. Bollocks - balls. Sometimes used as an exclamation, like “Shit!”
20. Fanny- Vagina. Often used as a low key insult (Aw he’s a right fanny)
22. Shag - screw. Shag is less derogatory than screw.
23. Uni - short for university. Is that your college?
24. Secondary school/High School - Ages 11/12 till 17/18
25. Primary School- Ages 5-11
29. Full Stop - Period. The punctuation kind.
30. Crap - Less derogatory form of Shit.
31. Wanker - technically, this means someone who jerks off, but it’s used as an insult.
32. Dickhead - another insult.
33. Twat - Some people use this as an insult.
34. Cunt - vagina. Commonly used as an insult. Is considered worse than any other (You’re a cunt!)
40. Bonnet (a car bonnet) - hood.
41. Boot (of a car) - Trunk
43. Glaswegian - someone from Glasgow
44. Dodgy - suspicious/not quite right. “Ooh, he looks a bit dodgy/My pen’s being dodgy!”
45. Tad - A bit. “Are you cold?” “Just a tad.”
47. Absofuckinglutely - a very enthusiastic yes. (Us Scots swear. A lot.)
48. Fortnight - two weeks.
50. Chuffed - proud, happy of something someone’s done for you.(Aw I’m well chuffed)
51. Bawbag- scrotum. Usually used about someone who is annoying. (He’s a pure bawbag)
52. Bevvy- Drinking Alcohol (You having a bevvy the night?)
55. Wean (Pronounced “Wayne”)- Child (I’ve got watch the wean the night)
57. Tap- to borrow (Could I tap a tenner till the morra?)
59. Tube- idiot (You’re a fucking tube, mate)
66. Shite- Shit. (Ususally, Shite is used in a less gross/insulting manner. You would say “I’m off for a shite” and not “I’m off for a shit”)
68. Hole- Sex/Laid (I’m getting my hole the night)
