Hey, just saw you replied. Mind telling me what kin is, in your words? All I've seen so far is people claiming they're dragons :/

The answer will vary from person to person (and someone who’s fictionkin will have a different interpretation than I do, since I am but a humble otherkin) but in my own words:

Otherkinity is an ontological phenomenon. Otherkin are people to whom that phenomenon apply. That doesn’t explain a lot but stay with me.

Ontology is “the philosophical study of the nature of being, becoming, existence, or reality, as well as the basic categories of being and their relations” (yes, I quoted that straight from Wikipedia). In other words, to study ontology is to study existence itself and an ontological phenomenon is a phenomenon relating to existence itself. There are plenty of well-known ontological concepts out there. Determinism, dualism, nihilism… All of them deal with what existence really means (or doesn’t mean).

Otherkinity is a phenomenon concerning someone’s interpretation of their own humanity. You can neither convert to, nor disaffiliate from it, as you can with a religion. If you are otherkin, you are otherkin; if you aren’t otherkin, you aren’t otherkin. That’s what the community has come to agree upon during these past few decades. They key factor is that an otherkin identity is based on consistent personal evidence.

Again, I consider it to be an ontological phenomenon, first and foremost, and like to draw parallels between otherkinity and determinism.     Both ‘otherkin’ and ‘determinist’ are identities that one chooses based on observations. An otherkin might observe frequent supernumerary phantom limbs and urges to act in a way that’s generally considered nonhuman. A determinist might observe that everything happening seems to be caused by something else. Both are, in a way, beliefs, but they’re based on some kind of evidence. More than beliefs, they’re fundamental parts of the way one perceives the world and the self.      Both otherkin and determinists ultimately end up looking for the moniker that most closely matches what they’ve observed, and add it to their ever-growing list of identities.

So, where does otherkinity cross the line from being an empirical to ontological phenomenon? In my opinion, when one starts speculating on the cause of otherkinity. Some would argue that we truly are nonhuman, while others would argue that we only express behaviors that fall outside of the usual human experience. Some would argue that it’s a spiritual thing, others a psychological, and others again that it’s a mix of the two. Some claim that our otherkinity must be here for a reason, while others say that it’s random.

With that out of the way, let’s get into the more juicy stuff. The stuff that antikin make cringe posts about: The reason why people pick up the moniker ‘otherkin.’

There’s no official community terminology for these things as a whole, but I affectionately refer to them as ‘indicators’ (kindicators?). The indicators that lead us all to the otherkin community to begin with. These are different from person to person and I don’t think anyone experiences every one of them. This is most likely also an incomplete list:    Difficulty understanding humans - A common theme in these kinds of discussions is that most otherkin don’t relate as easily to other humans as most non-kin seem to do. I’m one of the lucky few who’s not in this boat, but my friends and acquaintances in the community have explained it to me. The most obvious example is in interpersonal interactions, but simply just relating to a human society can be difficult. If your mind is set on a bonobo society, it’s distressing not to live in a close-knit commune, for example.    Dysphoria - I can already feel you getting ready to attack me, but please listen. Please. Dysphoria is a common symptom om numerous disorders, and can sometimes happen without any underlying cause. Dysphoria itself is not tied to being transgender. Gender dysphoria is tied to being trans. Dysphoria is the correct termto describe feeling distressed about your body and species dysphoria is an accepted concept in modern medical literature.     Homesickness - Most people experience homesickness for places they’ve never visited or where they don’t belong. A whale therian might feel homesick towards the ocean, an angelkin towards the sky, and so on.    Intrusive thoughts - You’ve probably experienced this as well. An impulsive thought to do something or of doing something. Most intrusive thoughts can be classified as either aggressive, sexual, or religious. They can contribute to someone feeling nonhuman.    Impulses - Also called urges. A drive to do something that’s not necessarily considered human-like or which contributes to feeling nonhuman, such as rolling, chasing, whimpering, hoarding, etc. These can be controlled, of course, but it’s always a relief when we’re in a situation where we’re free to act on them.    Memories - Kinda like intrusive thoughts, at least in my case, of being in a certain situation. Now, these aren’t always necessarily actual memories, that’s just the easiest way to categorize them. I’ve had sudden images in my mind of wading through grass with hooves and of taking care of a calf.    Shifts - A shift is the most commonly used word in the community for a change in perception. There are many different kinds of shifts (including the supernumerary phantom limbs that most anti-kin love to get angry over), detailed in this post.

Now is this caused by us literally being nonhuman creatures in human bodies? Who knows. But it’s something that makes us feel like we’re nonhuman, and that’s what being otherkin is about.

Otherkin are… weird. There’s no getting around it. We’re as weird as any other subculture and a bit more. It certainly doesn’t help that, to the dismay of much of our community, a lot of our “ambassadors” have been less than helpful in explaining otherkinity. But it’s just the way we are and though it can be exhausting at times and we’re witch-hunted on an almost daily basis, we wouldn’t wanna give it up. Otherkinity is part of what makes me the one I am and I wouldn’t really be me without it.

I’m not ace myself, so I’m coming at the whole acephobia thing from an outsider’s perspective, and as such, it’s not my place to speak to the experience of those on the receiving end of it.

However, as a bisexual dude, I can observe that many of the arguments that are employed to establish that ace folks have no place in the queer community are strikingly similar - indeed, at times practically word-for-word identical - to the arguments that were for many years (and in some circles still are) employed to establish that bisexual folks have no place in the queer community.

It’s enough to make a guy suspicious on general principle, you know?

I’ve gotten a few messages asking for (well, in some cases more “demanding”) elaboration, so: here are a few of the primary areas in which I’ve observed that arguments against bi inclusion and arguments against ace inclusion tend to exhibit significant overlap. There may well be others - these are simply the ones I’ve run into most frequently.

The Passing Argument

It has been argued that bisexual folks don’t have any grounds to complain about discrimination and violence suffered in relation to their orientation, because a bisexual person is able to pass as straight simply by choosing partners of the appropriate gender. Therefore, any discrimination and violence that a bisexual person does experience must be construed as voluntarily undertaken, since they could have passed, and freely chose not to.

This argument is similarly applied to ace folks via the assertion that being ace poses no particular barrier to seeking a partner of a socially acceptable gender, so any failure to do so must likewise be construed as voluntary.

The Performativity Argument

It has been argued that bisexual folks ought to be excluded from queer communities because sexual orientation is purely performative; i.e., being gay is defined in terms of currently having a sexual partner of the same gender.  A bisexual person who has a partner of a different gender is functionally indistinguishable from a straight person, and must therefore be regarded as straight. Conversely, a bisexual person whose current partner is of the same gender must nonetheless be regarded with suspicion, because they could “turn straight” at any time simply by leaving that partner.

This argument is similarly applied to ace folks via the assertion that their orientation has no discernible performative component; an ace person is functionally indistinguishable from a straight person who simply isn’t involved in a sexual relationship at that particular moment, so ace folks must therefore be regarded as straight by default.

(An astute reader may notice that the passing argument dovetails neatly into the performativity argument: those who choose not to seek partners of a socially acceptable gender may be dismissed because any violence and discrimination they experience is a consequence of their voluntary failure to pass, while those who do seek such partners are performatively straight and therefore to be shunned. It’s a neat little system.)

The Mistaken Identity Argument

It has been argued that, while bisexual folks may suffer discrimination and physical and sexual violence, they’re not targeted by such acts because they’re bisexual. Any discrimination and violence a bisexual person suffers in relation to their orientation is suffered because they were mistaken for a gay person. Any effort on their part to discuss such experiences is therefore to be regarded as appropriative, in spite of the fact that they personally experienced it. In short, a bisexual person’s own experience of violence and discrimination doesn’t truly “belong” to them: it “belongs” to the purely hypothetical gay person their persecutors allegedly mistook them for.

This argument is applied to ace folks practically verbatim - no particular adaptation is necessary.

I’ll add The Contribution Argument, which involves one of these gatekeeping behaviors:

1) rewriting history to erase bisexual and asexual contributions to political LGBTQ rights movements, and then claiming that bisexuals and asexuals have never done anything for the community at large

2) arguing that modernday bisexuals and asexuals should be excluded from current political movements because our goals are distinct from, or even contradictory to the goals of the LGBTQ rights movement at large

3) interpreting any attempt on the part of bi/asexuals to make safe spaces for ourselves within the community as an attack on LG safe spaces, generally by reframing bi/ace pride as homo/lesbophobia, or by dismissing accusations of bi/acephobia as inherently homo/lesbophobic

In other words, arguing that bisexuals and asexuals, rather than being contributing members of the community, are parasites on the community, leeching from, and undermining the community and its goals.

The Contribution Argument is an interesting one because it goes way beyond popular biphobia.

It’s often been asserted that bisexual folks ought to be excluded from the LG community because that community is specifically for folks who experience homophobia, and bisexual folks don’t experience homophobia, save by misidentification. (See the Mistaken Identity Argument, above.)

However, anybody who’s over the age of 30 can tell you that the positioning of the experience of homophobia as the community’s great unifier is, itself, a relatively novel development.

Up until quite recently (and by “recently” I mean as recently as the mid 1980s), even lesbians were routinely characterised by the leaders of mainstream gay rights activism as unwelcome parasites, riding on the movement’s coattails and contributing nothing in return.

Not only is identifying the experience of homophobia - defined narrowly as discrimination against those who are actively involved in sexual relationships with persons of the same gender - as the sole qualifier for inclusion a totally arbitrary place to draw the line, it’s baldly ahistorical.

Historically, a great many folks who do experience this type of homophobia have routinely been left out in the cold by mainstream activism for gender and sexual minorities - and the Contribution Argument, as you’ve outlined it here, is one of the primary tools that’s been used to justify that exclusion.

Newsflash: no one wants an invitation to that party. No one is “invading.” No one wants to be included in your “gay club.”

What we want is shits like you to quit perpetuating intra community bigotry and hatred in the LGBT+; because the only ones treating it like a “club” are those of you that check the “queer credentials” of everyone looking for a safe space and stamp their hands with “gay enough I guess” to let us pass through the gates. Also the idea that you have to have the consistent ability to perform your sexual orientation on a daily basis in order to be oppressed enough to be welcomed into the exclusive “gay club” is pretty shitty. The point of having inclusive spaces is to allow people a specific space where they feel they can comfortably perform and express their orientation/identity/etc, but if you gatekeep, what you’re telling people (bi and ace people in the case of this discussion) is that they must subject themselves to a constant barrage of discrimination in order to be worthy enough to access a space where they do not feel discriminated against, which just defeats the purpose of said “inclusive” space, doesn’t it?

Why should anyone demand that certain members of the LGBTQ community must run a trial by fire first in order to have enough oppression points to pay for a spot in The Gay Club? And then on top of that, tell them that even AFTER they subject themselves to said discrimination, they’re only accessing the same discrimination “real” gay people face and are therefore somehow insincere in their experiences because they aren’t “gay enough” every day of their life to constitute a real place in the community.

A thing that kinda puts me off of getting into alterman groups is that there is always so much attention in paganism, spiritual belief and all that stuff, wich is fine by itself, but what a an atheist alterhuman is suposed to do? Is there are more folks like that? I have never found them.

This is something I’ve been talking about recently, among other things in the same vein. It’s definitely a problem in certain alterhuman groups that are supposedly inclusive of those who are atheist or who experience their alterhumanity as based in psychology, or even straight-up mental illness.

There are absolutely other atheist alterhumans who aren’t pagan and don’t feel anything spiritual about their alterhumanity, you are not alone in that. If anyone would like to chime in with experiences relatable to anon, please feel free! What do other atheist, nonspiritual, psychologically-based, or even just non-pagan alterhumans think would be helpful to make you feel genuinely included?

Atheist otherkin here. Not really wanting to make a long post, but one of the things I had a lot of trouble with (and still do to an extent) was finding out what it meant to be a dragon, as otherkin. I made a post about this on Reddit recently, so I’m going to copy part of that over here:

A lot of the topics one sees in the community, both inside and outside, [are] based on the spiritual and the supernatural, and this can be a bit frustrating for people who don’t have any belief in these things… . 

There may be neurological and genetic factors which lead to some people being otherkin versus others not, but there haven’t been any studies on it, so anything is entirely speculation. As it is, I highly doubt that brain examinations on human babies will find that there will be some which look “more dragon” and that these will on average grow up to be dragonkin. Psychological theories (the nurture of nurture vs. nature) have been proposed, but I haven’t seen them backed up with any studies… .

Very few otherkin actually believe that they are physically non-human (or neurologically non-human); usually this is considered to be more non-human on a spiritual level, commonly as having a non-human soul/spirit or being reincarnated from a non-human. Of course, this might not work very well for someone who doesn’t believe in souls, reincarnation, or other supernatural phenomena. Personally, I don’t really see how one can logically identify as an non-human animals on a psychological [or neurological] level (sapience, whatever that is, is something that otherkin have but Earth non-human animals do not, though it’s could be a different case for dragons). For myself, as an dragon who does not believe in dragons nor the supernatural, I would either identify as a dragon on a “metaphorical soul” level, e.g. if souls existed, I would have a dragon one, or on a “I feel like a dragon” level and leave it at that… .

I am inbetween the two things, or neither, of spiritual and non-spiritual.

I guess for me it means my core self and self concept. My internal narrative being one of human and nonhuman. Someone in thinking and behaviour that falls between two species, while my humanity by its very nature can explain and contain both.

My understanding and perspective on that core self has changed over time. I interpret nonhumanity differently than in the past, and while spirituality I left behind awhile ago when it comes to therianthropy, I can’t say that my understanding of self has a psychological lens to it.

People from both camps can read my experiences and apply any of it to that, of course. My lacking the spirituality would logically fall to the psychological. I dislike the dichotomy.

I don’t believe there is much root or reason to being a bat monster.

I could say that I am me, this instinct and feeling and behaviour and sense of place existing somehow without reason or cause and that I have simply observed and applied the thing that looks and feels closest (bat) to better navigate. That seeing myself as bat helps me make sense of myself and of the things that came before. Those descriptions seem to help non-therians/ non-kin more than they help me. At least now.

If I say that I am spiritually a bat, my soul in a past life, I am still a stranger to bats. My humanity, this life, this memory loss of a past life… I’m not just a bat anymore.

If I say that I am a bat-human-thing in a psychological way, I’m even more a stranger.

For some reason both of those seem vastly unpleasant.

And if I combine the two, still I am limiting myself in the endless chase to discover what this identity is made of and where it comes from.

I am objectively a bat monster and subjectively a bat. Transcending humanity while at the same time subhuman. Physicality and symbolism slamming together and meeting somewhere in the middle of literal and non-literal.

Shamelessly inbetween.

Everything ceases to matter in the face of that.

I guess that is what I mean when I say I identity as nonhuman.

>>BUILDING TENSION WITH THE SIX KEY COMPONENTS

CONFLICT: Your character wants something but they can’t have it - not without a struggle. Do they want to escape? Do they want to save someone? To create tension, it’s so important to make sure your readers know what your character’s goal is.

UNCERTAINTY: We need to make our characters fight for their goal by throwing obstacles at them. The more impossible the task seems, the more your readers will doubt your character will succeed.

ANTICIPATION: This is where foreshadowing comes in. If something bad is going to happen, allude to it and build that atmosphere. Inject fear into the hearts of your readers.

EMOTIONAL SIGNIFICANCE: If we want our reader to want to see our character succeed, then we need to make sure there’s an emotional reason for them wanting this goal. What will happen if they fail? The stakes need to be clear and important to our character in order to make our reader care.

LACK OF CONTROL: One way to increase tension is to pile obstacles onto your character which are beyond their influence. If they feel lost despite their efforts, achieving their goal seems more impossible and, as mentioned above, that helps build “uncertainty”.

TEMPORAL ASPECTS: If your character has a set time in which they must achieve their goal, then will this add a ton of tension. And if you have succeeded in making clear, emotional stakes then the reader will be biting their nails as they count down alongside your character.

If you feel your manuscript is lacking in tension, analyse it for the six above components. Every story needs “conflict”, “emotional significance” and “uncertainty” to be obvious. If you are confident all three are clear, then try ramping up “lack of control”, “anticipation” or “temporal aspects”. All six aspects should be present for a story to really shine, but sometimes they might be more vague. For example, it might not be a set time limit but an inevitable event and this also touches on anticipation and lack of control.

Growing up my parents taught me that if you’re too sick to [insert responsibility here] then you’re too sick to [insert something that makes you happy here].

It took me a really long time to unlearn this. When I would get sick or have a “bad day” I would deprive myself of anything that made me happy. Watching movies, eating something I enjoyed, going for a walk, playing video games or just browsing online looking at funny cat videos. I wouldn’t let myself do these things because I was always told that if I’m too sick to go to work, or do homework, or go to school then I must be too sick to play Mortal Kombat or watch Unsolved Mysteries lol.

Whenever I wouldn’t feel good, which I later learned as an adult was due to sleep deprivation caused by my ADHD and depression (and of course the depression itself would cause me to feel like shit), my parents would tell me “if you’re not throwing up, then you’re not sick.” And when I would stay home from school (or even work in my later teen years) my parents would make sure that I didn’t have any “fun.” No TV, no movies, no games, no going outside, no arts and crafts, no books, no nothing. Just lay in bed and feel miserable.

I’m happy to say that I no longer do this to myself. Now when I’m having a bad day or I’m sick (cold, flu or whatever) I allow myself to do the things (within reason lol) that I actually love doing. If I’m not too sick to step outside for a few minutes then I’ll go for a walk. I’ll watch my favorite movies and if it’s a bad day or a cold (something that doesn’t hinder my appetite too much) I’ll eat my favorite foods. I don’t guilt trip myself anymore for having a “sick day.”

Just because you’re sick (whether physically, emotionally or mentally) doesn’t mean that you can’t do things you enjoy. You’re not any less sick because you watch TV. You’re not any less sick because you’re playing video games. 

Actually you SHOULD be doing these things when you’re not feeling good because they make you feel better. The better you feel, the faster your heal.

The woman in the bathroom is trans and is scared that if she comes out of the stall the women that walked in will insult or harass her. but when she comes out they compliment her on her dress instead. The add ends with saying “stress tested for women.” It means Secret is including trans women in their definition of women.

I have reblogged this three times now, each one mentioning the fact that Secret not only included a trans woman, but that they /had the other women compliment her dress and treat her with respect/. I will reblog this every time I see it because it’s so important. More companies should involve trans people in their marketing - we do exist. Props to Secret for getting in on this movement. It makes me really happy to see more of the trans community represented in daily television.
