Kinda speaks about you, doesn’t it?” Despite her harsh words, her expression softened only slightly upon hearing what was troubling him. It wasn’t an excuse for being a dick, but Victoria wasn’t completely cold-hearted, either. “Hannah isn’t doing too well, is she?” Her tone became so much softer, almost like a whisper, and her mentality of the situation shifted, if only a little. “I can give her some of my rations, if you’d like. If she’d take them. I don’t really mind.” It’s not like she was best friends with Hannah, but losing a brother had to be though. If she could do something to ease the situation… she would.  

“i didn’t say anything about people prejudging me. i never said their thoughts were wrong, and no one said i’m not a criminal.” hannah isn’t doing too well, is she? he rolled his eyes. “oh, suddenly you want to be sympathetic? go ahead, offer her your rations. it would be a change for someone to have the balls to actually offer them to her, to even look her in the face. most people have been leaving their rations by the front door and ding dong ditching her house. which, if it weren’t for me, their rations would be wasted, because my girl hasn’t left her bed in at least a week.”

nina tilted her head, which willed her raven hair to cascade down her face a bit before it was brushed behind her ear with one hand. “i don’t know. is it just his head? because i’m not sure how that would feed everyone. and how would will even season a human head?” a few bystanders snickered though no one was brave enough to look their way. she turned toward them with a smirk before stepping up to the tall boy. “look, i get the frustration, but i’m sure he didn’t mean any harm.”

"oh yeah, you’re real fucking funny. your silver spoon fed mouth wants to stick itself where it doesn’t belong. let’s see how funny you are when your brother dies. is your boyfriend going to do both of your work shifts so you can eat when you’re out of your mind with grief? no, i’m sure he won’t, because you probably don’t fucking have one!”

“Jesus, sensitive, are we?” Maybe, or maybe Victoria wasn’t the best to handle those situations, either. At any other moment, she might’ve tried to defuse the conflict, but in that time and place, she just didn’t have the energy to try. Victoria wasn’t even looking at him, she was looking at the sign behind him. “I get it that’s a stressing situation, but can’t you tone it down like, five notches? We are all stressed.” Was provoking the biggest guy around the smartest move for Vicky to do? Probably certainly not, especially without any witnesses close, but if he had the right to be pissed off, so did she. After all, she doubted he would actually carry on with his threat. It was like a 70-30% chances in her mind.  

he let out a snort, laced with sarcasm. “a stressing situation. you probably wouldn’t know a stressing situation if it came over and knocked you on your ass. i bet the most stressing situation you’ve ever had was deciding which dress to buy. i have to wake up in the morning and decide if going to a work shift for rations so we can eat is worth my girlfriend’s sanity. you go spend an entire day alone with hannah and then you can talk to me about toning it down.”

nina was just a bystander in the altercation, but she was close enough to see that the boy he was talking to was scared out of his mind. it was a scene that looked all too familiar, yet from where she was standing now it was a bit horrifying to see someone talk down to someone like that. “you know, that threat is very unclear. what do you even mean by that?”, she inquired to get the heat off of its target in a lighthearted yet firm way.

jesse’s head snapped in the direction of the voice. today was not the day to fuck with him. “did i stutter? what part of that was unclear? it’s simple turn your head in a different direction or your head becomes lunch. i think it’s pretty self explanatory.”

“oh, fuck, dude.” clark had completely forgotten that jesse was with hannah jordan. like, keiran’s sister hannah. he knew there was no retracting anything he’d said, but it didn’t weigh on him too much. but he did feel a little sympathetic that shit was so bad he had to feed hannah. “sorry. just, like… you seem kinda touchy.”

"touchy?” of all of the words people had used to describe jesse in his life, touchy had never been one of them. “my girlfriend cries all day, barely sleeps, won’t eat, and when i leave to come here, any progress she’s made disappears.” he wasn’t yelling, but he was talking loud enough that all of the other nosy people listening to their conversation could hear. “so every day i have to choose whether we get to eat or she gets to keep her sanity for a little longer. if that means i’m touchy, so be it.”

she tried to take deep breaths, holding back a tidal wave of feelings that threatened to pour out at any second. she didn’t want to cry again. she was so fucking sick and tired of crying. her whole body hurt when she cried. the world was ending when she cried. i miss my brother. she wrestled the thought back into the depths of her brain as soon as it showed its ugly face and tried to focus on something else, anything else—her grip on his t-shirt, the smell of him mixed with the smell of her bed, his arms holding tight to ground her. “i just want you.” she barely whispered, afraid that her voice would break.

jesse let out a deep sigh of defeat. not that it was hard, he didn’t want to go in the first place. he knew they’d eventually run out of food and then they’d be screwed, but he didn’t want her going back until she was ready. “if i’m not going anywhere then i need to cook what we do have so it doesn’t go bad,” he told her as he reached over and took her phone, texting grizz that no one was coming again. “if you want you can come with me and help... or just sit there and look pretty.” he gave her the best grin he could muster up.

the more she thought about him leaving, the more she thought about how long it had taken to feel normal like this again. or at least numb. at least it didn’t hurt so much anymore. but if he left her alone with her thoughts, she’d fall right back down the rabbit hole of how painfully lonely her life was without her brother. not to mention she wasn’t sure where the rest of the alcohol had gotten hidden and she didn’t have the wherewithal to get up and go find it.

she rolled over without getting any farther away from him, burying her face in his chest. “i don’t care. i’m not hungry.”

he was never the type of boyfriend to tell her what to do, mostly because he didn’t like being told what to do. he’d always found that amusing because she managed to get him to do whatever she wanted without even trying. which was why, in this case, he wasn’t as opposed to letting someone else do it. he’d let grizz hide it from her, not even bothering to ask where it was. it was probably better if he didn’t know anyway. i don’t care, i’m not hungy. as if leaving her wasn’t already hard enough. “i know,” he wrapped his arms around her tighter. “i can find someone to come stay with you.”

clark was back to his job after all the commotion of the past few days, because… well, everybody was doing it. things were mostly going on as normal. today he was hanging in the cafeteria ( even though the more he thought about it, the less he understood what bad thing could possibly happen in the heaven where food was made ). 

his eyes wandered as he tripped over his own thoughts trying to work it out and suddenly, jesse wilson had a real pissy look on his face. “bro, chill,” clark said, raising his hands palms-up. “i wasn’t even looking at you.”

a month ago, jesse probably would’ve pummeled this guy. hell, before prom he probably would’ve. but now he didn’t have the energy. he barely had the energy for his usual threats, his last one already soaking up what was left of it. he wasn’t used to this, the constant draining feeling. he spent any time away from hannah working his shifts and, if he could manage, hers too. “whatever man, i’m too fucking tired for this shit. i just need to feed my damn girlfriend.”

hannah liked the dark. she liked her bed. she liked feeling jesse’s warmth around her. it was safe. it was just like before normal. somehow, in the midst of all this loss and emptiness, she liked something. and that was why she was holding onto him so tight. “don’t go to your shift,” she whispered, never opening her eyes. “just stay here.”

he didn’t want to go anywhere. she’d finally calmed down and he knew that if he left, they’d have to go through the whole thing again when he got back. he also hated the idea of her being alone. he hated it in general, but more so now that she felt it. “if i could stay here for the rest of my life, i would,” he sighed deeply. “but if i don’t, we won’t have food and unfortunately, we need that.” he pressed his lips to her forehead, but made no effort to get up. he wanted to tell her he’d be back later but he couldn’t help but think about how the last person who’d promised her that, didn’t.

it was ridiculous, the way people were staring. he wasn’t sure why he was so fucking interesting. maybe because most people hadn’t even known he was here or maybe because he was the tallest person in this town. but either way it needed to stop. “yeah, i get it, you’ve never seen jesse the giant work before. it’s amazing, baffling, hard to look away. so let me give you some incentive: look somewhere else or your face is going to be tomorrow’s lunch.”
