Needing some advice: Does anyone else have a vocal hamster?
I have had Cinny for 8 months now and OH MAN does this freak me out.
When she gets very excited or hyper during play time she does some squeaks. She has done this for a veeeery long time and i would be taking her to the vet at any signs of illness surely, but she has done this for ever and is totally fine…
I don’t ever want to take her for a vet trip without reason as it would stress her out, but i dont want to NOT take her and kick myself for it!
Is anyone else able to relate? For those with a vocal hammy, at what point should I be worried?
(Health info: weight great, teeth beautiful orange, eyes bright, ears up, fur very soft and full no balding, poo normal, no injuries or illnesses in the past or present, healthy diet, very alert, nose and ears are clear, and has a very usual routine)
Beann was a very vocal hamster. She would squeak while foraging, when she was given a treat, when she was running on her wheel. Nothing was ever wrong.
Just pay attention to what she’s doing. If you can hear or see her simply going about her business or enjoying herself, nothing is wrong. If, however, it’s very sharp and shrill (you know it when you hear it, trust me), continues on for longer than usual, or something sounds off about her actions or looks off about her, that’s when you should be concerned. Do a health check, make sure everything is okay. Sometimes it’s a false alarm and sometimes it’s an actual issue. Familiarize yourself with her normal and if something deviates from it, that’s when you should start checking to see if there is something you ought to be worried about.
It takes a bit more attentiveness than what comes with a non-vocal hamster, but it’s pretty much just business as usual.
