Jekyll and Hyde The Musical (The Movie) CONFRONTATION SCENE
So it was announced in 2019 that Alexander Dinelaris would write the movie and direct it.
I would like to share how I see the iconic “Confrontation” scene playing out on the screen. Enjoy!
EXT: JEKYLL’S HOUSE-WINDOW-NIGHT
We can see into JEKYLL’S LABRATORY, the doctor’s back to the camera.
INT: JEKYLL’S LABRATORY
JEKYLL is standing in front of a basin scrubbing his hands of LUCY’S blood. A mirror is hanging on the wall above the basin.
SONG: THE CONFRONTATION
JEKYLL
It's over now! I know inside. No one will ever know the sorry tale of Edward Hyde. And those who died. No one must ever know! They're only see the tragedy They’d not see my intent. The shadow of Hyde's evil would forever kill the good that I had meant!
(Jekyll has scrubbed the blood off his left hand, but his hand is still red. He lowers his head, looking into the reddened water in the basin.)
JEKYLL (cont’d)
Am I a good man?
Am I a mad man?
It's such a fine line
Between a good man and a…
HYDE (O.S.)
Do you really think
That I would ever let you go?
(Startled, JEKYLL jumps. He no longer sees his reflection in the mirror. It’s just HYDE smugly looking back at him.)
HYDE (cont’d)
Do you think I'd ever set you free?
If you do, I'm sad to say,
It simply isn't so.
You will never get away from me!
JEKYLL (closing his eyes, denying what he sees)
All that you are is a face in the mirror!
I close my eyes and you disappear!
HYDE
I'm what you face
When you face in the mirror!
Long as you live, I will still be here!
JEKYLL
All that you are
Is the end of a nightmare!
All that you are is a dying scream!
After tonight,
I shall end this demon dream!
HYDE
This is not a dream, my friend
And it will never end!
This one is the nightmare that goes on!
Hyde is here to stay,
No matter what you may pretend
And he'll flourish long after you're gone!
(Jekyll spins around away from the mirror, refusing to look at him any further.)
JEKYLL
Soon you will die,
And my memory will hide you!
You cannot choose but to lose control!
HYDE
You can't control me!
I live deep inside you!
Each day you'll feel me devour your soul!
JEKYLL
I don't need you to survive
Like you need me!
I'll become whole
As you dance with death!
And I'll rejoice
As you breathe your final breath!
(We then hear HYDE’S VOICE is now coming from inside his head, ringing loud over JEKYLL’S own. JEKYLL covers his ears.)
HYDE
No, I'll live inside you forever!
JEKYLL
No!
HYDE (Getting Louder)
With Satan himself by my side!
And I know that now and forever,
They'll never be able to separate
Jekyll from Hyde!
(The music suddenly stops as JEKYLL screeches. In an instant, he rips the mirror off the wall and throws it on the floor, shattering the glass.
There is a pause as the tortured doctor catches his breath.)
JEKYLL (panting)
Can’t… you… see it’s….over now?!
(JEKYLL looks over at his lab table and begins to walk over.)
JEKYLL (cont’d)
Time to die.
(He stops in his tracks as if he was physically stopped. HYDE’S voice is coming out of JEKYLL’S mouth.)
HYDE
No, not I; only you!
JEKYLL
If I die, you will too!
(Suddenly, JEKYLL’S left hand reaches at his own throat. The doctor stops it with his other hand. HYDE has taken control of it.)
HYDE (pointing at his face)
You’ll die in me and I’ll be you!
JEKYLL (dropping to his knees, begging)
Damn you, Hyde. Leave me be.
HYDE
Can’t you see? You are me!
JEKYLL
No! Deep inside…
HYDE
I am pure; YOU are HYDE!
(On the next beat of music, JEKYLL falls on his back. The left hand HYDE is using is getting stronger and is overpowering the right hand holding it back.)
JEKYLL (eyes widened)
No! Never!
HYDE (mockingly)
Yes! Forever!
(On the next beat, HYDE starts strangling him! Desperate and running on adrenaline, JEKYLL grabs his left wrist. He is able to slowly press the hand choking him away from him. Realizing he still has a chance, JEKYLL’S fear in his face drops into an expression of boldness and defiance.)
JEKYLL (rasping)
Goddamn you, Hyde! Take all your evil deeds and rot in hell!
(The music swells until, with an incredible jerk, the doctor breaks his left wrist. SNAP! HYDE screams. HYDE catches a glance at a shard of glass from the mirror. He picks it up with his only good hand. )
INSERT: SHARD OF GLASS
(HYDE’s face is still reflected in the shard, staring at JEKYLL.)
HYDE (through gritted teeth)
I’ll see you there, Jekyll.
(HYDE dissappears, leaving only JEKYLL’S reflection.)
CUT TO:
OVERHEAD SHOT of JEKYLL
(JEKYLL is on his knees, holding his broken wrist. He drops the shard of glass. He takes a big breath and with every fiber of his being for the next fove beats of music.)
JEKYLL
Never!
(On the fifth beat, he falls frontward, exhausted.)
