Today is the last day of my 30s. They were marked by surgeries and heartache but also by my wedding, my rewarding work with my students, and my involvement with raptor education. I circled the globe five times while providing support for the parents of our students, and found out that in a pinch I could give a guided tour of the Forbidden City (first time going, relying on my readings) and that I secretly could transliterate Mughal Persian. True, abiding and lasting love and happiness found me, unsuspecting, in friends and new family. I danced with my nephew in our pajamas and with my husband in our living room. I knew uncertainty and loss, and felt each sharply. And, though I won’t be able to be with family and friends and loved ones in person tomorrow, it is a ridiculously minuscule price to pay to make sure I, and they, make it through these times. I scowl, therefore, for the comedic effect: I’m the very lucky, (soon to be) forty-year-old man that my mother saw in me when I was nine.
