Okay but imagine being the team of Eridian scientists tasked with keeping Erid's Only Human alive for as long as possible while the whole planet's environment is literally trying to kill him. And then Rocky shows up and is like:

“Grace says he would like half of dome to be water.”

“Oh, is necessary for humans to have large amounts of water question?”

Small Eridian equivalent of a sigh. “No. Not needed for life. In fact Grace will die if he falls in water and does not get out.”

“Tell him we give him water in containers that won't kill him. Lots lots lots of water on Erid for Grace to drink.”

“No. Grace say he want water on ground. Also want it with excess sodium chloride compound so it will be unhealthy for drink.”

“WHY QUESTION???”

i dont think im ever gonna get over the scene where rocky finds out grace isnt going home.

the little foot stomps when he says question, which is something he does every time but are infused with actual frustration while he interrogates grace

the sulky way he says no again and again when grace tries to get him to give him a thumbs up

the way grace's voice breaks when we says "we got stars to save."

"need word. to risk self to save other." / "dumb." and then writes brave with this sort of painful pride because he doesnt know yet

the way grace steps away to have a moment to himself

rocky doing the math on his claws. "i can give. i go home six years slower."

the resolve in rocky's voice when he says he couldnt fix his crew but he can fix this, and grace go home

the way grace's breath hitches when he breaks down

"okay."

"i thought you made peace, question?" / "i didnt mean any of that. that's just something you say."

ending with the hug which is plain adorable.

like fuck me it is so perfect. front to back perfect. the performances are so good. like i have a lot of favorite scenes in this movie but it is up there.

Eridian Grace, as in culturally Eridian, not the species Eridian, is so important to me.

Grace who does jazz hands and taps when he's asking a question and says some words three times like Rocky. Grace who makes chirps and trilling noises when he's happy.

Grace who starts thinking and dreaming in Eridian, who sometimes has dreams that are just sound, no visual. (Grace who, if he ever goes back to Earth for whatever reason after years on Erid, forgets some words in English and speaks in the sentence structure of Eridian because he has to translate from Eridian to English when he speaks outloud).

Grace who does scarification (even if Rocky protests at first) - I've read some fics where he does the Voyager pulsar map, or dots and lines showing his route from Sol, to Tau Ceti, turning around towards Sol, and then the line going all the way back to Erid. Even though he already has the scars from Rocky saving him, maybe Rocky's family crest. A scar showing his rank as Captain of the Hail Mary - maybe something to represent her, too.

Grace who wears Eridian gems, as earrings, in a chain for his glasses, in strings draped over him that clink together when he walks - the most important ones, like the earrings he wears all the time, the color of the blueish-green gems (or spots?) in/on Rocky's carapace.

Grace who wears a bracelet on each arm that have ribbed marks like on Rocky's arm so he can properly say goodbye (not something he had to do, but something that felt right to do, something that made him feel more like himself), sound included.

Grace who considers himself an Eridian!! Grace who IS an Eridian!!

you get me… i need eridian grace so bad. i definitely this his body movements and cues would become a lot less aggressive and hed lack some facial expressions, not just from like.. the pressure and stuff hes living in, but also because everyone around him doesnt need those as much more pronounced movements, hell he could twitch a muscle and theyd know.

he speaks quieter, using sound cues a lot that dont particularly make sense to any normal human. most eridians who spend a lot of time with him have developed these sound cues as well, which is definitely strange. since grace cant make all the sounds they can make i like to think he has a sorta like.. sound board? not one he uses a lot but if hes talking to a not well known eridian hell use it to indicate tone and other things like that when necessary, he likes to use it while teaching cuz he doesnt want to have kids growing up and talking weird from the get go (they usually do anyways)

i like also thinking about how rocky is probably so much different than everyone else. he not only spent 4 decades alone with no company, but then spent the next 8(?) or so years with a complete alien with VERY different cultures. he’s probably a lot different now. :3

what's your animation process? how on earth did you make something so beautiful...... i can never get my animations past the sketchy stage before i lose confidence or give up, what steps do you follow to get your animation from start to finish? :O

its kind of the opposite for me, my roughs look so ass😭 but i learned that its okay because each new pass is an opportunity to improve things and fix mistakes

its always best not to overthink things and just plow through the work, at least for me bc i know if i stop to plan, nothing will ever get finished

also if youre worried with about your cleanup being too stiff, the solution ive found for myself is to have a bigger gap between it and tiedown, so youre not just tracing over the same lines. its more tricky tho because you have to figure out a lot of things like perspective and volume while also drawing clean, but this way your linework will be more intentional

to make it easier to maintain consistency and good spacing, animate body parts (or even parts of body parts) separately, like go through the entire movement of the bottom side of the elbow, then return to frame one and do the top side, etc (you can kind of see it in the video)

also, if something is bothering you, like if a drawing seems kinda off, or you feel like the animation is jittery in some spot, my advice is to get in there and fix it! even if it seems like its gonna be too much unnecessary work. at least for me, i know if something is bothering me, it will bother me every time i watch the animation, so its better to fix it than to have an artwork i cant look at.

One of the reasons people headcanon Grace as aromantic is the unfortunately realistic scene where they go "you don't have a family or a loved one" as if that's enough of a justification to send him on a suicide mission. As if not having a family makes Grace inherently less valuable and means he should be more willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good.

Grace wasn't sad and lonely, he was happy, he had a good life, he very much did not want to die. They have to do a looney tunes chase sequence and drug him because Grace was *very* unwilling to be the sacrificial lamb. Humanity's savior was dragged kicking and screaming into the role and called selfish for daring to be a coward, as if most of us wouldn't be.

And then he befriends Rocky, who never demands a sacrifice from him, who willingly prolongs his journey home so Grace can go back to his. Rocky has a mate back home and his species depends on his return, and still risks his life to save his squishy human friend. And Grace returns the favor.

And thus the power of friendship saves two planets.

Im sorry but Ryland Grace is the type of person who does math to try and figure out his sexuality and concludes he must be bisexual because his level of atraction to any gender is the same (zero. the level of atraction is zero. he's aroace)

she's platonic about it but in my opinion, stratt 100% treats grace as her dead wife. she keeps a tacky fox trinket in her coat pocket. there's a framed photo of him in her study . he's grinning goofily in it (bc he's a dork). new guy like: is that her husband? / no, dumbass, it's dr. ryland grace, 1/3 of the hail mary mission. / oh, fuck. were they... ? / yeah, it's unclear. black-and-white montages of grace messing around in high-level meetings play every time stratt contemplates committing more environmental crimes. she looks up at the night sky and vaguely wonders if he's enjoying his space ramen. that's her dead wife. she killed him.

okay but what if, before Grace dies, the Eridians make contact with ANOTHER intelligent alien race that happens to resemble humans more than they resemble Eridians. so Grace is called in to be on the team of Eridian diplomats, and he gets to facilitate even more positive interstellar diplomatic relations.

and Rocky is just hanging around in the back glaring at the other new alien race like “alright you can BORROW my Grace but you don’t get to keep him. we’re not like the humans, we are not throwing away a perfectly good Grace. don’t get any funny ideas. I’m listening to you (insert equivalent of the ‘I’m watching you’ gesture for a species that does not have eyes).”
