Was talking to a coworker today who explained that her grandfather was like Snow White âbut Californian. And an old man.â in that the creatures of the forest would follow him around and presumably duet with him.
âWhen he died the ravens sat in the trees outside for a week, watching. Taking turns. A horde of raccoons tried to break into the house every night, tearing at the siding. Eventually they gave up, but it was unsettling.â
âAww. They were checking on him!â I said, like a normal person. Internally, I thought âMaybe you could do the thing you do with dead pets, where you show them to the living pets so the living pet understands theyâre gone. But I guess if you did that to a bunch of scavenging species, theyâd be like âWell, thatâs very sad but he IS food now.â So what youâd need, for human sensibilities, is some sort of transparent corpse barrier. Like a see-through coffin oh thatâs what the dwarves were doing! Youâve stopped paying attention to this conversation about the loss of a beloved family member you gotta phase back in.â
oh that's what the dwarves were doing
The Matrix (1999)Â dir. lana wachowski, lilly wachowski
men make it absolutely impossible to practice humility
what you say: âI think this is the caseâ
what men hear: âI have no idea whatsoever, but hereâs a totally random guessâ
what you say: âIâm not an expert on this subjectâ
what men hear: âI donât know anything about this subject and need its bare fundamentals explained to meâ
what you say: âI could be better read in this areaâ
what men hear: âI have never read anything in this areaâ
like okay fuck it nevermind Iâm actually an expert in every subject Iâve ever read or heard about. in fact I know everything.
If anyone's ever wondering why I come across as such an arrogant bitch on Tumblr it's because I used to work in science with a lot of men and never readjusted my communication style afterward.
This is one of my biggest seemingly low-stakes feminist soapboxes. Women are often encouraged to take hedging, consensus-seeking, and checking-in phrases out of their speech in order to seem "more confident". And listen, of course you do not need to say "I think" when you actually know for pretty damn sure, or double-check every little thing you say, or apologize for things that are out of your control.
But there are men in my life who I respect, who I think are generally good communicators, but who have admitted to me that if they do not know the answer to something they will just state their best guess in a confident tone of voice, with no hedging or clarification to warn the listener that what they just said was pulled from their ass.
I once asked my high school boyfriend what noise a platypus makes and he confidently told me "oh they quack" and I said "really? that seems like they'd have different noise-making structures than ducks since they're not birds" and he said "oh yeah you're probably right. I was just guessing." And had no idea why I was mad! I was like, so if I ask you a question you might just bullshit me?? What if I had believed you and gone and repeated that to other people? I could have looked like an idiot. I could have spread misinformation to a ton of people! But I have told that story to other men and had them say "oh yeah I totally do that."
This is so much worse communication than just saying "I don't know but I think..." There shouldn't be campaigns training professional women to sound "more confident," there should be campaigns training professional MEN to stop doing whatever THAT is!
[ID: Chidi Anagonye from The Good Place saying âokay, but thatâs worse. You do see how thatâs worse, right?â End ID.]
Huh? What's this?? Something is on this 5c coin???

You guys want to watch a very respectable NOVA episode about Gobekli Tepe aka the oldest temple that shouldn't exist? It's good stuff here you go:
If you've never heard of Gobekli Tepe you should read about it as well for more good stuff. Pre-pottery pre-wheel people somehow carved a whole temple.
âI donât put politics in my storiesâ is the literary equivalent of a cishet guy going âI donât have pronounsâ
Links or it didn't happen!!!!!
And if something doesn't have a link, but you don't have the energy to check it, PLEASE at least check the notes to see if anyone else added a link and/or called bullshit!!!
And genuinely, try thinking of this not as something to beat yourself for when if you don't do it, but as something you can choose to do to help protect your friends and community from disinformation, misinformation, and propaganda
And by checking the notes, you can support your community even further by reblogging aka supporting and boosting the voices of people who DID go and add a source link to help everyone else
And to people who add sources and source links to posts:
<3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 Genuinely you're the best, keep up the good work :) <3
Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds, or bends with the remover to remove. Oh no! It is an ever fixed mark that looks on tempests and is never shaken
and while weâre at it, fuck this idea that ONE ACCOUNT has to belong uniquely to ONE PERSON. This is the same thing these silicon valley fucks want; their vision of the future where everyone has a unique biometric ID code implanted in their body is the ultimate extension of Netflixâs âno password sharingâ policy. You want to use your friendâs car? Sorry, you canât, you need to be an authorized user. Your mother wants to let you look something up on her OED account? Too bad! Thatâs only for her! The concept of perfect market efficiency gives them greedy little money bag eyes.
If I pay money to have a newspaper sent to my house, they donât charge me extra when I show it to my dad. This password sharing thing isnât just a Netflix problem; donât be surprised if it shows up elsewhere in other forms. Stamp this idea out now or weâll be stuck with it.
This is by far the most popular post I have and I have to say: good, Iâm right. Password sharing and ID verification are going to kill the internet. not oooh in 50 years. in like 5 more.
"the only difference between a cult and a religion is the scale"
NO. NO IT ISN'T. THIS IS WHAT THE CULTS WANT YOU TO THINK IT IS NOT TRUE. THERE ARE RELIGIONS THAT ARE NOT CULTS AND CULTS THAT ARE NOT RELIGIOUS AND YOU MUST LEARN THE DIFFERENCE
When people use the word "cult" in casual settings, 99% of the time they are talking about destructive cults.
These are inherently abusive groups, and often parallel the dynamics of abusive romantic relationships.
The B.I.T.E. model is a shorthand method for identifying if a group meets the general sociological criteria for a destructive cult.
Basically, does the organization or group exert Behavioral, Informational, Thought, and Emotional control over members. And this control in enforced through punishment ranging from social consequences to corporal punishment to ostracization from the group.
Does the group dictate what you can eat and when you can eat it? What you can wear? When you are permitted to sleep? How you use language? Where you can go? Who you can communicate with?
That is Behavioral control.
Does the group control what media you can consume? Are you told by the group not to research certain topics? Does the group tell you that only thwir approved information sources are truthful?
That is Informational control.
Does the group tell you that thinking about certain topics will have negative spiritual consequences? Do they tell you how the leader thinks and instructs you to adopt those same thoughts? Does the group use incessant indoctrination, such as hours-long sermons or speeches, to prevent you from forming independent thoughts? Are you punished for expressing any unapproved opinions or ideas?
That is Thought control and Emotional control.
If a group meets all of these criteria, the likelihood is that it is a destructive cult, rather than a legitimate spiritual or personal development organization.

but the reason weâre a family is that we learned, although some easier than others, that we canât go it alone. that the single smartest thing we can do is to ask for help. help me finish this, please. of course.
i hate when rich people condescend with the whole 'money can't buy happiness' argument like listen. just because buying your fourth car didn't fill the void in your deluded disconnected-from-reality life doesn't mean not having to worry about food/ bills/medicine wouldn't greatly improve the mental health of literally everyone else on the planet
Fun fact: they've done studies and money DOES buy happiness, but it tops out after a certain amount (nowadays around $500,000)
So yeah, having food / bills / medicine & a fair amount of leisure covered by income DOES buy happiness, but excess wealth depletes the effect exponentially.
I don't know exactly how to articulate this but... if you repeatedly show historical fiction women rejecting traditionally female skills/duties and doing swords instead, because swords is obviously the Most Important Thing, you are kind of implying that all the work that has been traditionally done by female hands for millennia was useless all along and not, you know, keeping civilization going. Because it's usually rejected not as a personal preference but as This Is The Important Stuff (male work) and That is The Dumb Useless Stuff (women's work) and that kind of bothers me. The message was supposed to be Vital But Underpaid and Underappreciated, not women's work is insignificant so let's all go do swords.
GILLIAN ANDERSON as DANA SCULLY The X Files, âFearful Symmetryâ
One of my favourite things about the Sherlock Holmes stories in universe being written for public consumption is that Watson does not try to hide the fact that he and Holmes do crimes such as repeatedly breaking into peopleâs houses or letting murders go. Instead he frames these events as fun dates filled with Holmes ranting about how stupid and/or useless Scotland Yard is. Every time it just makes me laugh.
It's like "Welcome back to a day in our lives as consultant detectives! Today we're doing some crimes so we can find proof that this criminal is morally not evil as per our personal judgement and so we'll let him go!" And I love it!
I also love when he adds in a little âAnd I purposefully waited 10 years to publish this story so now itâs definitely too late for the cops to do anything about it đâ
