What program do you paint with?

On the computer I use Adobe Photoshop or Corel Painter. On the iPad I use Procreate.

So I've received a request to do a tutorial on the basics of how I use Photoshop, and while I can honestly say there is no single approach I use twice and my methods are far from efficient, I hope I've organized this into something easy to understand if you're a beginner. Now let me just get this boring, obvious bit out of the way: if you ask any artist to impart wisdom based on whatever educational or professional experience they've had that you hope to imitate, nine times out of ten they will tell you that PRACTICE and EXPERIMENTING are CRUCIAL to building your own set of skills. I could go on forever about the tricks I've learned or the effects I've discovered by accident just by clicking random settings.

NOW keeping that in mind, it's also very important when working in Photoshop to use a NON-DESTRUCTIVE APPROACH. So when you're doing your experimenting and you're clicking random buttons, make sure you can reverse whatever you're doing or revert to a previous version of your work (this is not always as simple as using the 'undo' button!!!) THIS MEANS:

Save a MASTER VERSION.

Save OFTEN.

When in doubt, DUPLICATE whatever you're working on (either the layer or the whole file if it's a major change) and work off of the duplicate; branch it off as many times as you like. A quick way to do this is the "create new document from current state" button in the History window (see Workspace slide), which basically makes a clone of your Photoshop document.

That way if you've made a change that you don't like that you can't simply undo, no worries! Just go back to the most recent version you still liked and keep working off of that, instead of completely starting over. Trust me, once you've experienced the pain that is realizing you've done irreversible damage that could have been avoided and will therefore take hours to fix, you will quickly learn that there is no such thing as redundant precaution.

A NOTE ABOUT BRUSHES: Because the topic of brushes is a completely different beast that I foresee becoming a FAQ: YES, I download and use brush sets I have spent years collecting from other artists online, and NO, I do not remember where a majority of them came from. So if you find yourself wondering, "But what brush did you use for so-and-so?" the answer is probably a custom brush or a combination of textured brushes used together on different layers, etc. This, I'm afraid, is something you will have to start from the bottom and work your way up to.

Which app do u use in the iPad ?

It's called Procreate and it's $5.99 in the App Store. The Frozen drawing was my first time using it, and it has some very similar features to Photoshop so it was pretty easy to use after some exploring and experimenting :)

I thought I would practice painting on the iPad since I will be traveling over the holidays without my usual setup...so here's a Frozen thing, because yay Elsa and Anna!
