idk i think you should make this character's heterosexuality relevant to the narrative. i mean why are they cis if it's not servicing the plot. you can't just throw story elements in for no reason if you're gonna make an able bodied character it should really serve a purpose. like why are they white are you just trying to fill a checklist? :/

uh hey that person you just reblogged from used to be in our discord server but we had to kick them out because they admitted to watching t*m and j*rry... that show features violence and as such glorifies it.... when we confronted them all they said was "wtf its a show about a cat and a mouse"... if you dont believe me theres a whole callout post that features their name age and street address so you can go to their house and check... anyways you should unfollow them before people start thinking you like problematic media too :/ just trying to help

The fact it's literally a stereotype in media to have teen characters who show straight up traits of depression like locking themselves in a dirty room all day and screaming about how they hate everyone and it's played for comedy, ignored by adult characters as a 'phase'... is fucking horrifying! I'm no doctor but I know dying your hair green is a phase. Whereas staying in a filthy room for weeks on end, laying in bed all day, non-stop use of technology to the point you get migraines or lose sleep, are signs you need medical attention and therapy no matter how young and hormonal you are
There's a post I keep seeing go around that's like, "quick, list five things you like that aren't a piece of media," and every time I see it, I get the very petty urge to respond with, "teaching media literacy, studying media history, analyzing media, using media as a lens to study historical trends, and finding ways to connect people's interest in pop culture to important social issues."
I have plenty of hobbies that aren't media-related, sure. I love my garden, my pets, baking, and sewing. I just get rather tired of "media is evil, actually, and if you're really into it is is actually rotting your stupid little brain" rhetoric. If your goal is to get people to broaden their horizons and engage in multiple hobbies beyond passive media engagement, leading with shame (and social media posts that function as OCD traps) is a BAD FUCKING APPROACH. Shame is not a motivator. Shame only serves to condescend and shut people down.
This week I'm working on lesson plans to lead a six-week class on media literacy skills for a pack of homeschoolers. What the fuck kind of teacher would I be if I used an approach of "you're stupid for liking cartoons, go do something WORTHWHILE!" instead of "let's develop these skills by talking about a piece of media you already enjoy!"
To say nothing of the fact that this is the fandom and media website. This is literally where people come to engage with their fandom/media hobby. It's a cow farm, there are going to be cows outside. If that's not how YOU use tumblr, that's fine, but let's not pretend like "people into fandom" isn't a core demographic that this site actively markets itself toward. If you see someone being over-the-top about a piece of media, it's a fool's conclusion that they clearly must never log off and only ever do fandom stuff.
It's like reading a recipe website that focuses on cookies and cakes, and concluding that the recipe authors clearly must never eat anything that isn't chocolate, chocolate is the only thing they care about, and they think literally everyone in the world should eat only chocolate.
The version of that post I tend to see is always so... condescending about it too. I can't remember the exact phrasing but it's something like "mental health check" or "reality check"? actually it IS fandom misogyny that nobody feels safe hornyposting about female characters the way they do about men. like you genuinely cannot go "i wanna fuck that loser so bad" about your girl blorbo without someone either being a misogynist freak about it or accusing YOU of being a misogynist freak. like can female characters just BE characters yknow. even when the rare and valuable failgirl does hit a fandom like cocaine, she immediately HAS to be a lesbian. not just queer, specifically lesbian. like idk i feel like coral glasses is the most loserish losergirl you guys can actually handle before you start getting scared.

If I ever started building any kind of miniature sculptures or statuettes or anything that's supposed to be tiny, I'd first sculpt a 150% size perfect replicas of a coke can and two euro coin, that I could pose next to them for scale, to make the miniatures look more impressive.
