After Airplane responds to one too many Peerless Cucumber rants with “Bingge’s not gonna fuck you bro”, a not insignificant portion of the fan base pool their money to commission a new extra from Airplane where Bingge falls through a portal to the modern world, finds his most ardent defender, and brings him back to PIDW, upon which point it turns out Peerless Cucumber is actually a cucumber spirit who cultivated a human form, and her vegetable enemies transformed her into a man and tossed her through a portal. Upon her return, Peerless Cucumber turns back into a beautiful cucumber maiden, and the usual papaplot happens.

Shen Yuan hates the new extra. Obviously. He hates the implications on canon, he hates that his likeness was used, and most of all he hates that the cucumber maiden acts nothing like him.

When Bingge intentionally reverse transmigrates to find a nice Shizun and stumbles upon a weirdly kind shut-in, he gets the odd feeling this guy might be the one. Meanwhile, Shen Yuan believes the extra is happening in real life, and he REALLY doesn’t want to become a cucumber maiden who disappears into the harem except to provide meta commentary humor on occasion!!

He goes into Didi mode with Yue Qingyuan immediately!

Which is worse for Yue Qingyuan then not liking him because he likes him and treats him like a big brother but he does not treat him like Shen Jiu or as if he remembers their history at all

Imagine having a strained relationship with someone you love deeply. And one day they start treating you kindly and with affection

But they also look at you like a stranger. The little ways they used to show that they cared about you as much as you care about them are gone

They like you now. They are kind to you. They greet you happily and enjoy your company

But they aren't who they used to be. And they still don't call you by the nickname you went by as a child

The nickname that would signal that they forgive you

Because they don't remember that there is something to forgive

And that makes this kindness, somehow, more gutting than when they were angry with you

It's much more tragic that Shen Yuan simply likes Yue Qingyuan while wearing the face of the person who holds Yue Qingyuan's heart than if he hated him

Shen Yuan transmigrating into an npc peak lord who gets sent on a mission with Shen Jiu. They have to interact with a wealthy local lord who owns several slaves and Shen Yuan loses his shit on this guy, tearing him a new asshole for perpetuating slavery. Afterwards he offers discipleship to the now formerly enslaved people who are young enough to cultivate, and a generous sum of money to those who cannot join the sect. Meanwhile Shen Jiu watches, almost awestruck. Not even Yue Qingyuan is this bold in his anti slavery stance. Maybe afterwards he allows Shen Yuan to brush his hair, feeling the old burn scar that still lingers on the back of his neck.
