I’m ashamed by how long it took me to realize that these aren’t actual screenshots from the show.
imagine Odo with a box of puppies.
But also imagine Odo AS a box of puppies.
The whole “root beer” representing the Federation thing really bothers me. Of course, so many things in Trek do and for the same damned reason: It is very America-centric.
In Trek, root beer is assumed to be accepted by all humans. Reactions to root beer are always experienced by aliens, outsiders, NOT-humans, and that’s some seriously ethnocentric BS. Does it even occur to the creators that maybe root beer isn’t the most universal drink? Some Swedes think it tastes like toothpaste. Many Japanese think it tastes of medicine. Some French think it tastes like ammonia smells. Even the Britons think it smells more of an antiseptic creme than a drink. Did these people not survive the next few centuries? Or did we “win” them over to our cultural preferences in that time?
On the other hand, as this scene plays out as a criticism of such cultural-majority reinforcement, perhaps it works. The scene itself was rewritten last minute to include the heavy subtext of two aliens assessing and criticizing the Federation.
I guess I should be grateful it’s not Coca-Cola.
I totally hear you on the overall America Is The Federation thing, but I always had the sense that part of the joke of root beer was that it was this highly specific Earth beverage that most people don’t even drink and the aliens think is an essential cornerstone of Human civilization—the writers poking fun at themselves for the ubiquity of plomeek soup and Romulan ale.
I don’t think we ever see a Human character drinking root beer except maybe Jake. My headcanon is that Quark was like “fuck we have all these Humans on the station now, what do Humans drink?” and Nog was like “Jake bought a root beer at the boring base-bat game on the holodeck, it smelled toxic but all the holo-humans bought it when they used to have money” and Quark was like OK GOOD and ordered 500 cases.

One of the best pieces of Garak fan art I’ve seen in ages. Thanks, ololord! :)
THIS IS AN ACTUAL SONG FROM DS9. CUCUMBERS IN SPACE. IT’S AN *ACTUAL* SONG.
So I’ve read a shitload of fanfiction by now and while agressive and predatory Garak is fine and all but when he’s emotional and has his guard somewhat down is what makes my heart continue to beat <3

[I spent many episodes after “Second Skin” hoping that the real Iliana Ghemor would eventually show up on the show. I’m still disappointed that she never did. Seeing her meet Kira would have been fascinating, especially if it was after Tekeny Ghemor had died.]
THESE TWO.
