how to compliment someone without seeming like a fucking creep. an easy how to guide:
a) compliment them on something that they can change. don’t say ‘nice tits janice’, say something like ‘your shoes are rad’ or ‘your hair looks great’.
b) don’t be a fucking creep. if it’d weird you out if it was said to you, then it’s likely too creepy to say to someone else.
EASY.
also this pic is super strawmanny and gross. it is not hard to not be a creep.
My most favorite compliment I’ve ever gotten I got from a man who was a complete stranger who drove up next to me while I was walking home at 9pm in the night:
I guess he saw me speed walk, overtake, then completely outpace some really tall business man in front of me (who had also increased his speed to overtake me back but failed).
Anyway this complete stranger doing the exact stereotype of what a man shouldn’t ever do drove up next to me, rolled down the window and said:
“That is the fastest damn walking I’ve ever seen. Ma’am, you…have the soul…of a bicycle.”
Then rolled up his window and drove away.
He didn’t creepily drive behind me, he drove regular speed and came to a rolling stop. He didn’t roll down his window all the way or stick his head out, he said his piece quickly and with a great amount of awe and respect, then he didn’t act like he needed a response from me or expect anything from the compliment. And then he left as quickly as he came. The compliment was so good and politely delivered that I’ve thought about it with amusement for over a year.
It is NOT HARD to not be threatening to women. Those who can’t manage it are sus as hell.
I wish I could find a word
For the way a voice can wrap me,
Surround me like a caress of a chilly breeze,
Against tender, midday sun warmed flesh.
Each beat and sway rushes over me,
Awakening a field of small bumps,
As if the notes had crawled inside of me
And were breaking out from within.
What was once a quiet, lost echo
Of thoughts resounding in the empty chamber of my heart,
Is a sweet melody that swells and embraces
Every lone tear and desperate clench in my chest.
“You spend your whole life stuck in the labyrinth, thinking about how you’ll escape it one day, and how awesome it will be, and imagining that future keeps you going, but you never do it. You just use the future to escape the present.”
— John Green, Looking for Alaska
I Wish
I wish I didn’t know better.
I wish I didn’t know that it was useless.
That a drink wouldn’t numb me,
That a blade and a red line wouldn’t make me feel alive,
That a body wouldn’t warm the icy, hollow cave of my heart.
I wish that I had the guts to do it.
Maybe then they would notice
How much their actions mattered,
How broken my soul is,
How utterly alone I feel,
And how desperately hopeless I am.
Maybe if they saw,
Saw my body as broken as my soul
They would realize how cruel they were.
And maybe they would care.

Sometimes I need a reminder and I absolutely love this
I used to try and hold myself together,
To keep my pieces from shattering to the earth.
Now, in those moments when I’m breaking, I allow myself to feel it and
I allow myself to fall apart.
As the pieces of my pain are shed, I pick them up and paint them, turn them into novels and poems, music and prose,
And as they shift into beauty, morph into color filled with life wrung out of fear,
I put myself back together, my pieces wiggling into place, welcomed home.
I am no longer afraid of breaking.
Being broken means you are ready to transform.
To begin creating your
self.
To turn the pieces of your pain into
a masterpiece.

Basquiat was a genius that died too soon
A leaf falls in loneliness.
Blink
An artificial moon,
Elevated beneath the sterile white
I see looking up.
Blink. White. Artificial moon.
Blink. Still on.
Blink. Light turns off.
We joke about it being a ghost.
It’s just on a timer.
Dark. I close my eyes.
If only my mind was that light.
On, go about my day, off.
But it’s perpetually, hauntingly dark.
A vast ocean, after the sun but without a moon,
Not even a guiding star.
Thoughts, sometimes lapping rings,
Sometimes a reckless army of black tendrils,
Captivate me.
It’s endless… I drift, I drown.
Open. Blink. Light on.
One of my favorite poems
My Unicorn
She is the rustle in the golden field of sunflowers,
Spun spindle reaching up, ahead, forward.
The figure alight in the dusty glow of the setting sun
At once shadowed and revealed,
She comes alone in a loving wind of laughter.
She is looked upon with awe, glassy eyes of wonder.
Her presence is the bond of acceptance and encouragement.
So precious, she is, so sought after, but why is she always alone?
She stands as if she might never move,
A glorious monument in her own right.
But I fear for her, I ache for her.
What a lonely existence to stand alone
Because people can’t be bothered to try,
To stand humbly by her light.
Others have fallen, gone…
And while she has braved the changing of seasons,
I fear that they have taken some of her magic with them.
The smile that raised me,
Bears the weight of many weathered heartbreaks.
And my own heart weeps for her’s,
Because if her light and joy fades,
What hope is there for the rest of us?
This was my favorite poem before I found out it was in Dead Poets Society and now I love it even more so.
Before
I gaze at a square of memories,
Lifted before them
So they may not forget what was behind them.
And I wonder about those memories so clearly cherished;
The people with smiles and arms lovingly placed,
Around shoulders, around hearts.
I wonder if those smiles were true,
Or if those arms were staged as an embrace,
To hide their stifling agenda.
But then, maybe that’s just me.
Maybe I never let people breach my heart,
So their demons were called to the surface,
To claw at the walls containing me,
To coax my own demons out of their lair,
That I mistakenly called a castle.
The demons are out now;
I dance with them.
We are clawed, we are bloody, we are wild.
But we are more me,
Than I was before.
