Okay, another rant because my dash has been taken over by this since the latest wbk chapter dropped:

Y’all need to stop filtering the word “suicide” in your posts. Don’t write s*icide or su!c!de or anything of the like. Write the word out. Suicide. Just like that.

Why?

Because people who are genuinely triggered by that word can obviously still read that as what it is and likely will still be triggered by it.

AND when you don’t write the word out properly, tumblr’s filtered words/tags system does not recognize it and will still show that content to the person who has the actual word filtered. Yes, they can filter the different variations, but everyone replaces different letters with different symbols & people shouldn’t have to filter a hundred different variations for one word just because others feel the need to “filter” the word themselves in their posts.

You are doing more harm than good when you block out part of the word!

So please, as someone who has been suicidal and who has literally lost a sibling to suicide, stop making it harder for people to filter things!!!

CLARIFICATION

sakura haruka is 15 years old.

in japan, the first year of high school is from ages 15 to 16 (source). we know that sakura's birthday is right at the borderline between school years. so how do we know how old he is?

it makes sense to initially assume sakura is 16, based on this exchange he has with kotoha in chapter 9. however, in japan, it's not uncommon to refer to kids using their "school age", even if they haven't had their birthday yet (source). so "16, the same as you" means "I'm in the same school year as you"—not that they're actually the same age!

in japan, school years are grouped from april 2nd to april 1st of the following year (source). since sakura was born on april 1st, that means he's right at the tail end of the school year—making him 15, and the youngest in his class.

this is also addressed in an interaction between suou and sakura in the mobile game WIND BREAKER: REBEL HEROES, where suou makes note of the fact that he is 3 days older than sakura. suou's birthday is march 28th—absolutely before the school year cutoff—so him being older than sakura means that sakura's birthday is also before the cutoff, if only barely.

please note I don't endorse using this information as fuel for harassing people over ships—all of the major cast members are high school aged, and I really couldn't care less beyond that. I just felt it would be helpful to clarify this point since there seems to be a lot of confusion surrounding it.

EDIT: oh hey, nii-sensei also talked about sakura being the youngest in their new interview with anan magazine (source), so that's helpful!

something something windbreaker as a manga with the delinquent-based premise deals a lot with the crisis of touch — ie violation of physical boundaries (skin-on-skin contact) — and that it is the primary vehicle for connection. its surprisingly a very violent and yet gentle story.
