Obsession is taking pictures of the same thing a million times at a million different time. To make the results worthy, obsession needs engagement with the community.
Obsession has no boundaries. Repetition changes a man, and repetition creates a life.
Artist statement draft 3
I am into art because it brings me relaxation and self-elevation. In my daily busy schedule, an art class is like a break in the middle of the day. It is a valuable relaxation, because more than loosening my stress, it stimulates my creativity, which does not happen often outside an art class. Also, art brings me knowledge. Whenever I start a new project, there is new research I need to do leading me to learn new things. And each time when I try to find a new way to express my idea in my projects, I learn new skills. This elevation in my knowledge and skills make me a more sophisticated person. The positive elements that art bring me ensure me to pursue art as a life-long interest. On my way to a creative business career, I am sure my growing creativity will enhance both my job and my life.
I choose to use camera to express my ideas, because I think camera is one of the best ways to record the world. Usually, for a finished picture, I have four must-have steps: targeting subjects, sketching down my ideas on my sketchbook, taking the picture, and then editing. My theme is obsession, and in my opinion, an obsession occupies a tremendous part of one’s life. To show the impact of an obsession, I am into the technique of combining a person with the subject he is obsessed with using Photoshop. Take one of my finished pieces as an example, the picture with a man who grows a flower head and leave hands. First, I sketched down all the ways I wanted my model to pose. On paper, I drew the subject with different compositions, and I made little notes on how I wanted other elements, such as soft lighting and pink color tone, to support the pictures in a desired way. Then I picked the right person who would show my ideas ideally in his pose. When I took pictures, I followed the notes I had on my sketchbook but tried new ideas at the same time. Last, I edited the most satisfying picture with Photoshop, which made a person who grew a flower head possible.
My work started from a cultural conflict. The person regarded other cultures as inferior and American’s as superior. He was so obsessed with his own culture that he did not even realize he had offended people from other country on culture-related topics. From him, I noticed the danger of obsession and wanted to inform people about this danger. This was why I chose obsession as my theme. My goal is to help people realize that obsession causes a mind loss and it is actually controllable when one notices that he has an unhealthy obsession. People should know sometimes obsession makes them lose things or qualities they suppose to own because of their over-attention on the very subject they are obsessed with. Via my art pieces, I hope viewers can see the importance of being an open-minded person when they see the negative sides of obsession shown in my work.
