jeonghan sat beside you on the bench right outside the party house, wrapping his arms around you in a warm embrace. wonwoo had gone inside to fetch a bottle of water for you.
your body was trembling from the sight of your ex boyfriend. no one told you he was going to be there — with another girl at that. needless to say, you were mentally unprepared to face him after a year.
the alcohol and previous blunts you had smoked clouded your brain. your brain felt like a puddle of mud; you weren’t able to form a coherent thought.
“he—“ you started, your voice nearly cracking, “he’s over me.”
your breaths came in short intervals — he was afraid you’d start hyperventilating in front of him. he soothingly rubbed your arm. “breath for me, pretty.”
the image of jaehyun smiling with another girl kept playing in your head. who was she again? was she one of the girls he went to the arcade with last year?
“my god…” you mumbled to yourself. you brought your hands to your face as you sucked in a sharp breath. you tightly shut your eyes, letting out a shaky breath. he was over you. he was happier without you. you were merely a person of his past.
he had everything: a social life, good grades, a healthy family, hell, he even had girls lining up for him. he led a happy life that you tried so hard to find a place in.
did it really feel this miserable to be the only one stuck? to be the only one still hung up the break up?
“yn,” jeonghan called out to you, his voice nothing but comforting, “cry if you need to. i’ll always be here for you.”
his voice nearly made you sob. “i—i just,” you murmur, “i just feel so fucking pathetic, jeonghan.” your hands trembled against your face — they couldn’t seem to stop. you curled your fingers into your face, your nails pushing into your skin.
he quickly reached for your hands as he gently took them into his own. “don’t do that.”
you turned to look at your best friend, his loving and caring eyes boring into yours. he had a slight frown on his face, yet you could tell just how much he cared about you. though he’d never say it aloud, you know he cared. “let’s go home, hannie.”
you always thought jeong jaehyun was the perfect boyfriend: caring, attentive, funny, honest — the list goes on — but that was before he left you. now, two years later, you swear you moved on, involving yourself in college life and new friendships. when you see him at a college party, looking smug and unbothered, it’s like a punch to the gut. he seems to have moved on, while you’re still wallowing in self-pity. but you really thought things couldn’t have gotten worse when you found out that he was the new employee at the campus bookstore you always worked at.
