Macro Pictures of Peacock Feathers
Canadian photographer Waldo Nell got interested in the iridescent and delicate details of peacocks’ feathers. Thanks to a Olympus BX 53 microscope, he captured hundreds of pictures showing these fascinating feathers, seen from very close. The quality of this microscope gives the impression to look at jewelry or necklaces’ braids. Source:fubiz

A Really Fucking Vulgar Guide to Not Losing Your Shit in College (Condensed Version)
Bitches love to put things into lists. Moreover, bitches love numbered shit. Here’s some numbered shit in list format to help you not suck in higher education. You’re welcome.
1. Go to class. Like 210% serious. I don’t give a shit if you’re a get by on nothing, A+ slacker. You’re fucking paying for this crap so you might as well get the services owed to you. Take your ass to class even if you zone out 99% of the time. You know 1% more than you did when you walked up in there. Congrats, asshole.
2. All that free time you have during your first week of classes? Make it your bitch. Don’t just print the goddamn syllabus and be like all done. No motherfucker. Take a good fucking look at that assignment list. What’s due next week? Yeah, do that shit now bc I know you don’t have anything else to do. Then when you’re coughing up a lung six weeks into the semester and don’t feel like getting your ass up to do that calculus homework, you’ll remember this week. You’ll remember that you’ve been a week ahead this whole damn semester. Pat yourself on the back, ass wipe.
3. Prepare yo self. No seriously. You got notes to print for class? Sure you could be like all those other bitches and just shove them into your backpack, or you could actually /prepare/ for class. I’m talking looking that shit over, identifying key concepts, getting a decent grasp of the material before your ass is even in class. You a STEM major? Yeah, make this kinda shit your life because now class is like one bomb ass group review session. Again, you’re welcome.
4. Snack like a motherfucker, but save that junk food shit for the weekends. From now on, you are a fucking health guru during the week or if you’re a slacker like me, at least on the days you have class. Fruits? Hell yeah. Pack some of those. Mind wandering in class? Snack on some apple slices. Can’t stay awake? Keep eating some almonds or some shit, but don’t be that bitch with the potato chips. Just don’t.
5. Read. Yeah, you heard me. Read and I’m not just talking assigned reading. I bet my left butt cheek that your campus library has /something/ of interest to you. Commuting and don’t want to drive out there? Library databases bro. We’re in the digital age, motherfucker. I’d bet my other butt cheek that the shit you want is in a nice little PDF somewhere. But na man, you thinking maybe you want to go into computer science? Check out computer science books and eat them up bro. You don’t like reading them? Probably not the field for you. You a biology major in your second year? Yeah dumbass. Time to break out the bio books and not the ones your professor is shoving in your face. Amaze your friends and teachers with your out of class knowledge. Be a fucking star.

@merswine
Here’s my issue.. I’m generally scared when first meeting cis males and I get a lot of hate for it. I approach them hesitantly, and I get immediately defensive when they compliment or stare at me. Hear me out - I’m scared of sharks as well. I have a 1 in 3,700,000 chance of being attacked by a shark in my life time. Snakes - a 1 in 50,000,000 chance of dying from a bite. I have never in my life had anyone tell me my fear in snakes, or sharks, was unjustified, even though they pose relatively no threat to my life.
In my lifetime however, I have a 1 in 4 chance of being sexually assaulted by a man in North America, and furthermore, an 80% chance of that man being someone I trust. About 80 percent of murders are committed by men. I can count on one hand how many girl friends I have that have not been raped by someone they trusted. I have never met a woman who has not been sexually assaulted in some way or another. I have not walked down the street downtown in 5 years without being cat called or winked at, nor have I completed a walk without glancing over my shoulder repeatedly since I hit puberty. When I was 13, 5 young men chased me in their van and tried to pull me in. When I was 19, a man shoved his hand up my skirt and told me if I didn’t plan on getting fucked I should change my outfit or leave the party. When I was 22, someone who was supposed to be my mentor for criminal law asked me on a date. I have never made a male friend that hasn’t tried to have sex with me, and then stopped being my friend when I wouldn’t.
My slight fear in men is 925,000x more justified than sharks, 1,250,000x more justified than spiders, yet I have been interrogated, called a man hater, verbally assaulted, and made fun of, because I don’t feel comfortable trusting every man I come across. “not all men” they say, just 1 in 4 right? Well “all women” have to live thinking they are prey. I do not hate men, so don’t even try me with that. I have, however, been violently oppressed and assaulted by men, and my hesitance is fucking justified.
And I am even more scared now that a man who brags about sexual assault, and that may be a child rapist, has been elected the president of the United States.
This was the most beautiful thing I have ever read and I want to create powerful films with this woman
Textbooks for medical students
NB: These textbooks/tools are only essential in my opinion. They are what helped me the most over my past 4.5 years of med school, so I hope they help you too. (I’m also studying for the EE/NAC exams (Canadian Boards), so I’m currently using Toronto Notes 2016 as well, but it’s best to not look at them if you’re not planning on writing these exams.)
I recommend buying second-hand books, but if you want to buy a fresh copy, I suggest getting them at thebookdepository.com, they offer free shipping worldwide and dispatch from the UK within 2 working days.
Anatomy
Gray’s Anatomy for students
Netter’s Anatomy flashcards
Neuroanatomy (Crossman and Neary)
Cranial Nerves Functional Anatomy (Stanley Monkhouse)- pdf link
I recommend getting a separate neuro book because myself and a lot of my peers were struggling without a more comprehensive book to guide us through it. The cranial nerves pdf version is worth spending time on- it will help you understand neuropathology a lot more in the future.
Physiology
Lippincott’s Biochemistry- best for those godawful G6P pathways etc
Ganong’s Review of Medical Physiology
Pharmacology
I used the BRS series
Get access to the BNF it will save your life
Pathology
BRS series again
Pathoma- incredible. Everything will make sense after getting through it.
Microbiology
Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple
For physio, pharm, path: if you are considering/taking the USMLE, use First Aid and BRS textbooks.
Clinical Medicine
Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine- good for quick references on the wards
Kumar & Clark’s Clinical Medicine- literally has all you need to know about medicine as a final year student
Oxford Cases in Medicine and Surgery- case based, good for people initially starting clinical attachments. This helped me a lot with learning hx taking
Oxford Assess and Progress Clinical Medicine- for MCQ practice
Physical Exams
Ruthven’s Essential Examination- VITAL for passing OSCEs
Clinical Cases and OSCEs in Surgery- V. good if you want honors in surgery
Talley & O’Connor Clinical Examination- Very good, detailed explanations, good pictures. Probably more detailed than needed for just a pass.
Surgery
(honestly I find surgery very straightforward. I only use college materials and my college has its own handbook..don’t think anyone else can access it, sorry.) If you’re like me and a huge sucker for surgery, I bought a hand-me-down Moore’s Clinically Oriented Anatomy to help me understand wtf was going on during surgical procedures, and in case surgeons pimp me on anatomy questions.
SPECIALTY SUBJECTS: Paediatrics
Paeds in a Page- summarizes every paediatric disease known in 2 pages or less. Helped me the most for this terrible subject.
100 Cases in Paediatrics
Illustrated Textbook of Paediatrics (aka ‘the sunflower book’)- good diagrams + flowcharts
Paeds at a Glance
I had a lot of resources for this module because I struggled a lot with paeds. If you had to pick 1 I’d go with either Paeds in a Page or Sunflower.
Psychiatry
(again, my college prints its own textbook for psychiatry, and that’s honestly all I needed. no one else can access this, sorry.)
GP
Oxford Handbook of General Practice- has more than enough of what you need to know
OBGYN
Obstetrics & Gynaecology- I didn’t really need this tbh. My college has a really good lecture series for this module.
Ophthalmology
Ophthalmology: an Illustrated Colour Text
Hope some of you find this helpful, good luck and don’t hesitate to msg me if you have any questions at all! Happy studying~
I’d like to add that the ‘Crash course in’ abd ‘lecture notes in’ books are good very basic guides before you bulk it up with the big books.
Don’t buy a book without test-driving it first from the library. And have a chat with someone in a year above you at uni about how much you’re going to end up using it. Because even some ‘required reading’ books don’t get a lot of use and you will end up with a lot of expensive books you never read. Make good use of the library, but buy a few (like OHCM or an anatomy text) that you will refer to a lot. I borrowed nearly all my specialities books.
Reblogging for reference.

Hear the beat of dancing feet!
During the Bubonic Plague, doctors wore these bird-like masks to avoid becoming sick. They would fill the beaks with spices and rose petals, so they wouldn’t have to smell the rotting bodies.
A theory during the Bubonic Plague was that the plague was caused by evil spirits. To scare the spirits away, the masks were intentionally designed to be creepy.
Mission fucking accomplished
Okay so I love this but it doesn’t cover the half of why the design is awesome and actually borders on making sense.
It wasn’t just that they didn’t want to smell the infected and dead, they thought it was crucial to protecting themselves. They had no way of knowing about what actually caused the plague, and so one of the other theories was that the smell of the infected all by itself was evil and could transmit the plague. So not only would they fill their masks with aromatic herbs and flowers, they would also burn fires in public areas, so that the smell of the smoke would “clear the air”. This all related to the miasma theory of contagion, which was one of the major theories out there until the 19th century. And it makes sense, in a way. Plague victims smelled awful, and there’s a general correlation between horrible septic smells and getting horribly sick if you’re around what causes them for too long.
You can see now that we’ve got two different theories as to what caused the plague that were worked into the design. That’s because the whole thing was an attempt by the doctors to cover as many bases as they could think of, and we’re still not done.
The glass eyepieces. They were either darkened or red, not something you generally want to have to contend with when examining patients. But the plague might be spread by eye contact via the evil eye, so best to ward that off too.
The illustration shows a doctor holding a stick. This was an examination tool, that helped the doctors keep some distance between themselves and the infected. They already had gloves on, but the extra level of separation was apparently deemed necessary. You could even take a pulse with it. Or keep people the fuck away from you, which was apparently a documented use.
Finally, the robe. It’s not just to look fancy, the cloth was waxed, as were all of the rest of their clothes. What’s one of the properties of wax? Water-based fluids aren’t absorbed by it. This was the closest you could get to a sterile, fully protecting garment back then. Because at least one person along the line was smart enough to think “Gee, I’d really rather not have the stuff coming out of those weeping sores anywhere on my person”.
So between all of these there’s a real sense that a lot of real thought was put into making sure the doctors were protected, even if they couldn’t exactly be sure from what. They worked with what information they had. And frankly, it’s a great design given what was available! You limit exposure to aspirated liquids, limit exposure to contaminated liquids already present, you limit contact with the infected. You also don’t give fleas any really good place to hop onto. That’s actually useful.
Beyond that, there were contracts the doctors would sign before they even got near a patient. They were to be under quarantine themselves, they wouldn’t treat patients without a custodian monitoring them and helping when something had to be physically contacted, and they would not treat non-plague patients for the duration. There was an actual system in place by the time the plague doctors really became a thing to make sure they didn’t infect anyone either.
These guys were the product of the scientific process at work, and the scientific process made a bitchin’ proto-hazmat suit. And containment protocols!

OK this is cute
#HumanizeHer
You’re in charge of assigning every child on Earth the monster under their bed. One child in particular has caused every monster assigned to him/her to quit. You decide to assign yourself.
Case: #273402 Status: Disastrous.
I stare at the file and realize I have no options, over the last 2 years every monster assigned to Charlotte Dower has quit, every last one. Her first monster; a giant goldfish-faced humanoid named Bubba, had been with her for four years, and then she wasn’t scared of him anymore. After that it was a string of different common, uncommon, and rare monsters… I even assigned a sentient sock monster to her. He came back crying! I look on my tablet, only one assignable monster left; myself. Field work has never been my cup of tea, but desperate times call for desperate measures. So at 8:03 pm, after Mrs. Gideon tucks in Charlotte and her little brother Daniel; I slither into the space beneath Charlotte’s bed. Across the room underneath Daniel’s crib is a rookie, Chico, a standard Creep kind of monster. I turn my attention to the bed above me, Charlotte is still awake but barely, I reach up over the bed and run an ice cold finger over her cheek, silence, so I do it again. “I’m not afraid of you monster!” She whispers, but her voice is shaking. I can see a small clock on the wall 8:14, a door somewhere in the house slams and there is an audible hitch of breath from above me. A few minutes go by I can hear Francis Gideon yelling at his wife. There are heavy footsteps on the stairs, and loud panting breaths, Charlotte scrambles off the bed and… She. CRAWLS. Under. The. Bed. With. Me. “Move. Over!” Charlotte hisses at me. I do. The door to the bedroom slams open and I smell the stench of human intoxicants before the man even steps inside. I know why Charlotte isn’t afraid of any of my monsters; she’s afraid of her own. Francis reaches a hand under the bed and I thrust my wrist into it, he starts to pull, I slither out. “What the…” I cut Francis’s next words off by unfolding to my full 12 foot height. Looming over the drunken man I caress my cold fingers down his face. “If you ever touch, scare, or harm my child again, I will find you, and I will do the same to you, for all eternity.” I promise to him. As Francis runs from the room he soils himself. I pull Charlotte from under the bed, tuck her back under her covers and kiss her forehead goodnight. “I’ll be back tomorrow night, sleep well darling.” Charlotte Dower is my child, I am the monster under her bed.
WELL GODAMN, WE HAVE OURSELVES A WINNER
Holy shit I’m gonna cry that’s beautiful.
