2) Her work is all really awesome! And she’s got a ton of short stories available for free online. Some of my favorites:

“Bluebeard’s Wife” -- what would happen if a woman Bluebeard married just didn’t look in the room?

“The Dryad’s Shoe” -- an aroace Cinderella who has zero interest in the ball or the prince but does love gardening

“Jackalope Wives” -- takes the skinshifting conceit of selkies and applies it to jackalopes (folkloric horned rabbits) in the American Southwest. Also stars the absolutely iconic Grandma Harken, whose left to clean up the mess when her grandson tries to catch himself a jackalope wife. This one won a bunch of awards and there’s an audio version read by LeVar Burton.

“Sun Moon Dust” -- a young farmer inherits a sword bound to the souls of three warriors, all ready to teach him to be a hero... but he has no desire to be anything but a farmer. A very sweet M/M story!

A lot of people make this mistake actually! ‘Skeleton’ can refer to any individual member of the family Zombie that has shed its fleshy exoskeleton. It’s just an unlife cycle stage, but because of its distinct appearance we refer to it by a separate common name (similar to how a ‘black panther’ is just a colour variant of leopards and jaguars, not a separate species).

Okay, so I think this is a point of confusion.

The term “zombie” is both a technical term, referring to a family, and a common name, referring to a genus.

The family Zombie is a broad, overarching group that includes the genus that many people call zombie (Ghoulus, not to be confused with Ghouli, the unrelated genus of the Ghala family which also includes bogeymen and some ghosts*) as well as the Mummy genus (Pyrima), the spore-zombie genus (Fungan) and a few others.

The colloquial term “Zombie” is the common term for the genus Ghoulus, which is in the family Zombie and includes Ghoulus romero (the walking zombie), Ghoulus snydera (the running zombie), and Ghoulus smithi (the vampiric zombie, also called the legendary zombie).

Interestingly, there are several things called “zombies” that are neither Ghoulus nor Zombie, including the dancing zombie (Jacksoni thrillera), which is more closely related to (although not currently actually in the same family as) clowns.

*Note: the ghosts in the Ghala family are not true ghosts. True ghosts are in the order Spectere, which is entirely unrelated to Ghouli, Ghoulus, Pyrima, and Fungan. Ghala “ghosts” are given the common name ghost because of their superficial similarity to true ghosts.

Important note: sometimes you’ll see people claiming that zombies are domesticated! They are not! Some zombies can be tamed (like Ghoulus romero), but zombies are wild animals and might hurt you if you approach them! Leave them alone and don’t feed them!

this is a great question! here’s the answer:

the closest to a domesticated ghost we have is the house ghost, Phantome domus (sometimes classified as a distinct subspecies Phantome domus domesticus).

P. domus is interesting because it’s like housecats – they are technically domesticated (scans have shown that the fight-or-flight response, like in domesticated animals, is weaker in P. domus than in related species like P. majestica, the manor ghost, or P. more, the cemetary ghost), but evidence suggests that it’s a naturalistic co-evolution rather than an intentional domestication process like with sheep or dogs.

If a house ghost takes up residence in your home, they are completely safe unless treated in an inhumane way. There is a stereotype of house ghosts that they are dangerous or volatile, but this is usually due to confusion with other species, especially the common poltergeist (Sellaruptor vulgaris) or vengeance spirit (Phantome odium).

Whenever I see one of these in gift shops or whatever, I have a sudden urge to pry it inside out like a one-inch popper, despite the fact that the attempt is destined to end in tears.

I just had the most delicious angst idea for Bastards vs Zombies hold on

You know how everyone calls Hipswitch a robot even though he really isn't? Like, yeah he's made of metal and wires and all that jazz, but he is a fully sentient being. He wasn't created by anyone for any specific task or objective, he just exists with his own thoughts and free will. People call him a robot the same way people call someone who's good at swimming a fish, like it feels more like a comparison than any kind of real classification. Hipswitch is not literally a robot, he's an Obscuran, with thoughts and feelings and opinions and all those other things that make us sentient.

Okay, so what if all of that was taken away from him?

Imagine, if you will, an AU in which Hipswitch has a run in with some tech genius (maybe our old friend Jess) and he just... doesn't come back. The others start to worry. It's not like Hipswitch to be late. Doc tries to ping him, but his comm is off. His emergency tracker too. Albus tries to track him the old fashioned way, Karmor tries to apply the detective skills Switchy taught him, but it's still days, maybe even weeks before they find him.

And when they do? Oh, they know immediately

That's not Hipswitch anymore.

His interface doesn't show those glowing gold eyes they know so well, it's just black and lifeless with the single red dot of a camera recording. He moves with cold mechanical grace but without the usual style and swagger of a cowboy. The hat and coat he loves so much are gone. He no longer responds when Albus calls him Switchy.

And he pulls a gun when Doc tries to get close.

But the worst part, the most spine chilling part to anyone who used to know him, is his voice. His accent is completely gone. The warmth and occasional rasp and everything that made his voice so distinct have been scrubbed clean. No sarcasm, no laughter, no nothing, just monotonous calculations and notifications.

Hipswitch is nothing more than a machine carrying out someone else's bidding. And his friends have no idea how to get him back.
