yesterday my country had 300 active fires.

people are losing EVERYTHING they own.

i have a friend that is on a train right now passing through places that have been burnt to the ground and she says the smoke is so intense it’s getting inside the train and she can barely breathe.

and yet, even though several people (myself included) have been trying to bring awareness to what has been happening in southern europe… what we get from most of you, those not part of the countries suffering, is silence. we don’t ask for money, we don’t ask for shit other than a reblog to spread awareness… something you can delete in 24/48hrs if you wish.

i don’t know what to tell you. i’m angry. i’m frustrated. i’m disappointed. i feel like i’m screaming into the void. “a reblog does nothing” - you know that’s a damn lie, you know exposure always helps, you know people start paying attention when posts on social media become popular. my country in particular is a small one, we get ZERO exposure. y’all are only starting to figure out we even fucking exist bc of the shit we’ve been winning lately.

but hell, if the EU doesn’t give a shit, why should some user on tumblr dot com?

This is fucking important. I am glad someone fucking spoke about this and said what they had to say. The damage is terrible, and all the evergreen, stone, even the ground is black. I was fucking terrified when Croatia was burning. The fire was near a village where I like and I thought it will burn down. I thought the church will burn down. I thought the cemetery where my grandpa is buried will burn. I still remember the smell of smoke, and when I went to check how bad is fire, my clothes and hair and skin all stunk of smoke. It didn’t go away for weeks.

Me, internally: Mycroft Holmes is the most precious person and nobody appreciates him. Sure, he has this stupid power complex, but he goes through every shit to protect his brother. He abuses government means to the extremest to keep an eye on him, risking his job to do so although it is the only thing he has, the only thing that distracts his mind and gives him purpose. He worries and is mocked about his weight when he is fucking gorgeous. He makes Sherlock forget about Victor Trevor's death and Eurus to enable him a normal, stable life - making that decision on his own at a very young age, because apparently he thought it was the very best for him. He helps Sherlock through his drug addiction, lets him write lists to ensure his highs will never end six feet under. He checks on his brother's new flatmate to make sure he does not threaten his newly-gained and fragile stability, helps Sherlock to fake his death, gets him out of Russian imprisonment by doing legwork that he is obviously not at all used to, risking his job and even his life, this time, gets him a pardon so Sherlock won't go mad in prison, assures him his support when Sherlock is a cynical bitch, accuses Lady Smallwood of being a spy because his brother believes so, and insults Sherlock and John to get his brother to kill him because he knows Sherlock needs John, despite the fact that he has just freaked out and vomitted because a man has been shot with a gun. He manages to play his act cooly to make it easier for his brother and STILL after all he's done for Sherlock, his brother chooses to shoot him, proving that here is nobody who loves him the most, that even the only person he cares about would choose somebody else over him. And then Mummy holmes says Sherlock has always been the grown up, like, fuck you, you don't know a shit about your own family. It bloody /hurts/, just give this wonderful, caring man some love like I don't even care who it is he deserves it so fucking much

Earlier today, I served as the “young woman’s voice” in a panel of local experts at a Girl Scouts speaking event. One question for the panel was something to the effect of, “Should parents read their daughter’s texts or monitor her online activity for bad language and inappropriate content?”

I was surprised when the first panelist answered the question as if it were about cyberbullying. The adult audience nodded sagely as she spoke about the importance of protecting children online.

I reached for the microphone next. I said, “As far as reading your child’s texts or logging into their social media profiles, I would say 99.9% of the time, do not do that.”

Looks of total shock answered me. I actually saw heads jerk back in surprise. Even some of my fellow panelists blinked.

Everyone stared as I explained that going behind a child’s back in such a way severs the bond of trust with the parent. When I said, “This is the most effective way to ensure that your child never tells you anything,” it was like I’d delivered a revelation.

It’s easy to talk about the disconnect between the old and the young, but I don’t think I’d ever been so slapped in the face by the reality of it. It was clear that for most of the parents I spoke to, the idea of such actions as a violation had never occurred to them at all.

It alarms me how quickly adults forget that children are people.

Apparently people are rediscovering this post somehow and I think that’s pretty cool! Having experienced similar violations of trust in my youth, this is an important issue to me, so I want to add my personal story:

Around age 13, I tried to express to my mother that I thought I might have clinical depression, and she snapped at me “not to joke about things like that.” I stopped telling my mother when I felt depressed.

Around age 15, I caught my mother reading my diary. She confessed that any time she saw me write in my diary, she would sneak into my room and read it, because I only wrote when I was upset. I stopped keeping a diary.

Around age 18, I had an emotional breakdown while on vacation because I didn’t want to go to college. I ended up seeing a therapist for - surprise surprise - depression.

Around age 21, I spoke on this panel with my mother in the audience, and afterwards I mentioned the diary incident to her with respect to this particular Q&A. Her eyes welled up, and she said, “You know I read those because I was worried you were depressed and going to hurt yourself, right?”

TL;DR: When you invade your child’s privacy, you communicate three things:

You do not respect their rights as an individual.

You do not trust them to navigate problems or seek help on their own.

You probably haven’t been listening to them.

Information about almost every issue that you think you have to snoop for can probably be obtained by communicating with and listening to your child.

Reasons Why I (And A Lot Of Other People) Ship Jeverus/Snames

(Note: If anyone who disapproves of this ship finds it, I put in all the appropriate tags, so please blacklist them if you don’t want to see Snames content. Also, be warned, there will be some James bashing in this, but not too much.)

Ok, so I was thinking about why exactly I (and most of us) ship Jeverus/Snames. Now, it’s not surprising that a lot of Snames shippers are pro-Severus Snape, and a good number of us actually kinda hate James Potter for that very reason (I mean, we can all admit that James Potter was an entitled, cruel asshole throughout his life). And although I very rarely label ships as abusive, I can readily agree that, in canon, James and Severus have an abusive relationship, a bully/abuser and victim relationship. But we still ship them, for some reason? And a lot of people say it’s for the enemies-to-lovers dynamic. I don’t really buy that, at least not for myself. I have very specific reasons for why I ship my ships, and they’re not usually for tropes as simplified and cliche as enemies-to-lovers (no offence to anyone who likes that trope). Plus many of the Jeverus fics I’ve read explore character growth and dynamics in a way I rarely see in many other Marauders-era fics. A good number of them have the best characterisation of Severus Snape I’ve seen in a long time, with all his skills and quirks and flaws and soft spots and small joys, giving more to his character than just “abused child who pined hopelessly after Lily” (of course his abuse did shape a lot of his personality, but there was more to Severus than that, he was more than his abuse and he was more than his love for Lily), and they don’t romanticise (or completely demonise, even if he deserves a lot of the demonising) James Potter either. This is why I believe most Snames shippers have more articulate and interesting reasons for shipping Jeverus than the enemies-to-lovers trope as well. So I was trying to understand my own thought process behind shipping Jeverus.

(This paragraph is mostly canon divergence and hcs. Read the next paragraph and so on for actual reasoning.) Firstly, the way I ship them is that James somehow sees his actions clearly and realises what a huge dick he is to Severus. This leads to guilt and then a long process of trying to make it up to Severus, and of course, he starts to get to know him and find qualities about him that he likes. Severus still hates James of course, and it takes months and soon a year or two for him to realise that James is being sincere in his apologies and that he actually does want to befriend Severus. Then of course it’s the natural friends to best friends to lovers progression, though James falls for Sev first, and spends ages mentally battling with himself (though at this point they’re already friends). Severus takes much longer and spends even more time hating himself and James for ever falling for James Potter of all people (but James is actually being sincere and kind and a bit of a dork and the boy actually does have a sense of compassion and a brain, and Severus doesn’t want to notice all this but he can’t help it when James is practically drowning him in affection, no one’s ever gone to such lengths for Severus before). Then hijinks and yelled out confessions and Lily and the Marauders becoming matchmakers, leading to James and Sev finally getting together. I mean, let’s not forget the whole “James saved Severus’ life” thing. Don’t get me wrong, I 100% know James just did it so that Remus and Sirius wouldn’t get put in Azkaban, and not out of the goodness of his heart or anything. But if I view it through this AU-ish narrative I have set up, then James is guilty af and maybe this is when he starts feeling like the Marauders (mainly Sirius) have gone much too far. Killing Severus was never in the plan. This jump-starts his sense of guilt, and he tries to fight his feelings of guilt and self-disgust by starting the SWM thing. Afterwards he realises he’s gone too far again, and he kinda goes through a mental breakdown, re-evaluating all the shit he and the Marauders have done to Severus the last few years. He keeps trying to justify it, thinking to himself that Severus is a slimy git, a Slytherin, he hates Muggleborns, he’s probably gonna become a Death Eater…..but then he remembers how frantically Severus apologised to Lily after calling her a Mudblood. He remembers how absolutely broken Severus looked after SWM. He remembers the real fear in his eyes when Remus nearly killed him. He remembers how small he looked everytime the Marauders got away with hurting him, how broken he looked, how all the life in his eyes had faded. He’s suddenly wondering if he and the Marauders have been acting more like Death Eaters than Severus has ever acted. This jolts him, and thus brings about a series of revelations that boil down to (1) Severus Snape isn’t a bad person and doesn’t deserve all the shit he’s had to endure from the Marauders and (2) James and Sirius have been absolute dicks to Severus Snape and James needs to make it up to him. It starts out as self-justice, so he can let go of his guilt, but quickly he finds actual, good qualities in Severus and it just escalates from there.

Now when I thought of it this way, I realised that I love watching James struggling with these new feelings and him pursuing Severus and grovelling for forgiveness, etc. Idk, for some reason having James falling for Severus is probably the best kind of punishment for him. Not because Severus is horrible or ugly or anything (I don’t believe any of that tbh), but because this is James’ heart going against everything he believed to be true, everything he ever expected. For once, things aren’t going James Potter’s way. And he’s sabotaged himself by bullying the object of his affections for years. And now he needs to suffer the consequences of his actions cuz they’re affecting his own life, his own happiness, directly! It kinda balances out the power dynamics between the two, because even though James is rich and popular and physically stronger and conventionally attractive and a Gryffindor Pureblood, now he’s at an emotional disadvantage. Severus is at an emotional advantage now because James is in love with him and will basically do anything for him. James will have to emotionally suffer in order to (a) get Severus to forgive him, (b) get Severus to be his friend, and © get Severus to fall in love with him. On the way he’ll have to stop his bullying behaviour, change his view on Slytherins, and maybe grow out of his sense of entitlement. So yeah, Jeverus is the best way for James to finally lose his bravado and some of the control he had on his life and feelings, suffer a lot in a very specific and personal way, and ultimately become a better person, while also having the added benefit of making Severus feel wanted and loved and happy. It’s a win-win! James suffers and becomes a better person, and Severus is finally happy and has emotional power over James Potter. So yeah, it’s cathartic.

Another thing is their “love” for Lily. I always thought James’ love for Lily was mostly superficial, just for her looks and how “fiesty” and “hard-to-get” she was. He never respected her rejections and just kept pursuing her without her consent. Maybe having Sev being the object of his affections will teach him about boundaries. And Sev’s love for Lily seemed a lot more platonic than people believe. Maybe he and Harry and Dumbledore and all thought it was romantic love, but to me it seemed more like a lonely boy who couldn’t tell the difference between romantic love and strong platonic love, and just wanted to keep his only friend. Severus seemed a bit too dependant on Lily, so I think moving on from her and finding James Potter, where James is the one who’s more dependent on Severus than the other way around, would be good for Severus. He gets to feel wanted for once, like somebody’s willing to fight for him. Of course, I still want Sev and Lily to stay best friends, just with less dependance and more camaraderie and open affection for each other, like they were pre-Hogwarts.

Now this next reason is more observational, and may venture into hc territory. Let’s face it, James Potter is canonically a bit obsessed with Severus Snape. Negative or positive, it’s still obsession. He literally pursues Severus to bully him more than he pursues Lily to ask her out! And his bullying behaviour and constant insistence that he bullies Severus “because he exists” kinda makes me think of alternative reasons. “Pigtail-pulling” comes to mind (AKA bullying someone cuz you have a crush on them). James seems like the type of guy who’d torment their crush to simultaneously get their attention and prove to themselves and the world that he doesn’t like them. And it seems like a perfect showcasing of toxic masculinity tbh, James being all proud and boisterous and tormenting and bullying people weaker than him. We all know that sometimes boys who are attracted to other boys showcase toxic masculinity so they can reassure themselves that they don’t like guys. This seems like a very James thing to do tbh, internalised homophobia causing him to exhibit toxic masculinity to cover up his huge-ass crush on Severus. I can honestly see this being a huge reason he bullied Severus so much. He was ashamed of his feelings for a boy, much less a poor, conventionally unattractive Slytherin boy. I feel like that’s why he pursued Lily so fervently; he was trying to prove to himself and the world that he’s straight as a ruler. Plus liking Lily could be used as an excuse. He can simply act like he’s jealous of Severus, when in actuality he’s jealous of Lily. Idk, all this seems so real to me once I think about it, as if it actually happened in canon. Either way, James Potter is probably a closet gay/bi with internalised homophobia who constantly bullies Severus Snape to prove to himself that he hates him, when in actuality he’s in love with him. The “crush” on Lily is a cover-up to mask his feelings for Severus and to convince himself and others that he’s jealous of Severus, not Lily, and that he only likes girls. At least, that’s how I see it😅

Another, more symbolic thing is their Patronuses. James is a stag. Severus is a doe. And of course we know that the books say that Severus is a doe cuz he loves Lily, but I hc that his Patronus was always a doe. It just suits him better tbh, does are alert, skittish, sensitive, they’re always on the lookout for danger, they’re the easiest prey (for bullies, in Sev’s case). Lily is fierce, protective, and quick-tempered, so I think a lioness should’ve been her Patronus, but I digress. Anyway, I just believe that Sev’s Patronus has always been a doe. And a stag (James) and a doe (Severus)? Compatible af. Soulmates. It’s just one of my favourite Jeverus hcs.

If you look at their personalities, they’re highly compatible. They differ but they’re also similar (much like Gryffindors and Slytherins in general). I’ve read countless Gryffindor/Slytherin posts, and they really do mirror Snames. Slytherins reign in Gryffindors’ impulsive, reckless instincts, while Gryffindors bring out Slytherins’ sense of competitiveness so they can shine instead of hiding their abilities. Gryffindors and their grand schemes would mix perfectly with Slytherins and their ability to execute these grand schemes with subtlety and cunning and finesse. Slytherdor ftw❤️💚👏🏼👌🏼 James is bold and loud and impulsive and showy, while Severus is quiet and particular and careful and intelligent and a perfectionist. James can bring out Severus’ passion and skill, while Severus can reign in some of James’ more destructive qualities. Not to mention the fact that James is rich and has a loving family, and if he and Sev start dating then James can buy Severus new quills, books, and robes, and bring him over to his comfortable, warm house, where Severus would finally be doted over by a loving family. They’re a perfect fit tbh. James has everything, except a good personality. In falling in love with and dating Severus, James will become a better person. Severus has nothing in terms of material items or status or love, so being with James Potter would give him all of that, plus the feeling of someone, especially someone who claimed to hate him, actually wanting him and loving him and showering him with love and affection and gifts (cuz we all know how extra James Potter is :3). So both Severus and James are happy, and everyone’s happy!

So yeah, basically, these are the reasons I ship Jeverus/Snames! With a bit of canon divergence, it could work perfectly imho. It requires a whole lot of character growth and forgiveness and a slow, positive progression of their relationship, all the factors I adore in my ships :3
