i haven't seen any posts about this going around on tumblr yet, and i know theres a lot going on around the world but this is an issue that needs (and has always needed) more coverage tbqh.
Kylie Jenner has recently been under fire for her clothing line in collaboration with Kendall Jenner, Kendall + Kylie, refusing to pay Bangladeshi apparel workers making their products. the company is owned by Global Brands Group, which has decided not to pay the workers due to the lack of sales during the pandemic. people started speaking up about the payment issue on Kylie's instagram, but instead of a proper response comments were being deleted and eventually limited.
however, the issue doesn't begin and end with Kendall + Kylie, the treatment of factory workers in Bangladesh is a problem with a long overdue response. most of these people are women working in gruelling conditions, being paid in dust and recieving little to no benefits. their lives are seen as disposable. during the quarantine, factories continued production but laid off a quarter of the workforce while the rest still face the threat of wage cuts and lack of access to healthcare.
all the fast fashion we consume like Gap, Primark, Forever 21 and C&A comes at the cost of labour exploitation in developing countries like Bangladesh. this is the country where the main source of income is textiles, where the 2013 Rana Plaza incident killed 1,100 factory workers alone, where workers constantly protest for better salaries and safer conditions, and yet they recieve not even an ounce of dignity for their hard labour. change needs to happen, better sooner than later. will reblog with what you can do to help (since tumblr hates posts with links).
two things you can do at the moment:
sign this petition to get these fast fashion brands to pay up (also check out @/remakeourworld on Instagram, the non-profit organisation who set up the petition)
share any information you find, spread awareness. Bangladesh and their sly censorship habit makes it difficult for issues like these to get media coverage.
also here are some articles i found about this:

Help me attend my fatherâs funeral and finance my leave of absence from work
My father died and I found out yesterday through email.
Long story short, yesterday, via email, I found out my father died. The funeral is in NOLA (his hometown) next week and I need help getting there, paying for lodging as well as financing my leave of absence from work bc i will not be paid for 1 month. âŹ
A round trip flight is $155 (my aunt only bought tickets for my brothers so I need to pay for this myself)
And lodging is $80 a night and Ill be there for 4 days so that will be $320
I also would like to have a couple hundred dollars available for transportation as well (to and from both airports, to and from the funeral, etc.)
I will not be returning to work for a month when I get back and on average I make about $1900 a month. Me not working means I cannot pay rent, bills, and/or buy groceries.
The total I need is $2575
Rather than just have people donate in good faith, I would like to offer for every donation of at least $10 will serve as a raffle ticket for a free commissioned art piece from me as I was planning on opening up commissions for my art this week until I was told this news. For example, $10 would be one entry, and $100 would be 10 entries. I want to let you guys know you are appreciated and I wanna give back something I am passionate about to show my appreciation for your continued support. Attached are pics of some of my recent pieces.
Donation methods:
PayPal.me/Amirahaa
Venmo: @Amira-Hasib
Cash App: $AmiraArima
I would use GFM but again, I need to book my flight and Airbnb ASAP and GFM takes forever to send $ and takes out hella fees.
I know this is a lot of money to raise in a short period of time but I really need help.
For the trip alone I need $675 for my month off I need $1900.
Please donate, if you cantâplease boost this.
OK So with the shit with the USPS going on:
1. Check your Voter registration to make sure everything is up to date. If you can, request a Mail-In Ballot. I live in CO, where all elections are Mail-In only now, so I get one anyway.
2. Fill out your ballot per the instructions on your Ballot. Some Notes:
Read Instructions thoroughly, and fill out your Ballot in private.
Do NOT post pictures of your Ballot as this may invalidate it. DO Post pictures of your âI Votedâ sticker.
Make sure to vote for all the offices up for election- as important as the presidential election is, your mayor, governer, local school board and sherrif have a MUCH bigger impact on your immediate safety and quality of life. Google your candidates, look up the Leauge of Women Voterâs Guides for a reliably Impartial rundown of your local candidates.Â
Remember also that it is better to have someone in office that is only moderately incompotent, than it is to have someone that actively wants you dead. It is the first step to having someone worthwhile next time.
If you wanted a third party option, your local elections are the best place to do this- my own city council has several Green Party members and it got me city-sponsored single-stream recycling! Its also moving the state legislature significantly farther left.
3. INSTEAD OF MAILING IT- LOOK UP WHERE YOUR BALLOT DROP-OFF LOCATIONS ARE.Â
Theyâre boxes you drive or walk or bus or bike or whatever up to and drop your ballot in, and the elections officials will have it that evening. Pros of Ballot Drop-Off:
Can be turned in the same day you reccive your ballot, if you want to get this over with ASAP
Open 24/7, so you can drop it off whenever
Absolutely guaranteed to get your vote counted, regardless of what Donald does with the Post Office.
No waiting in line
No exposing yourself to the coronavirus
Most cities will have several ballot Drop-Off locations, at places like the grocery store, the county courthouse, city hall, at high schools etc. Google your town or county name and âBallot Drop Off Locationsâ and itâll give you directions even.
Absolutely Save the USPS, but this is the BEST way to make sure your vote gets counted this
Batman: The Animated Series (1992-1999)
âEveryone feels robbed of their teenage years that donât really existâ yeah but the experience of losing your teen years to mental illness, homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of bigotry is different than being a non-mentally ill cishet teen who isnât living life exactly like it is on tv
May i add esp kids of color brown and black kids are constantly forced to grow up faster and are denied their teen and childhood years bc of the racism they endure
You may absolutely add this!!!
Can we please get these fucking traitors out of office? Keep this ball rolling, keep these subpoenas going, get these fucking scumbags out of here and in a prison
Just so weâre clear, this is what happens when U.S. citizens miss legal requirements:
when Lemony Snicket wrote âI will love you if I never see you again, and I will love you if I see you everydayâ that hurt me
Full paragraph hurts even more.
â (âŠ) I will love you as we find ourselves farther and farther from one another, where once we were so close⊠I will love you until your face is fogged by distant memory. I will love you no matter where you go and who you see, I will love you if you donât marry me. I will love you if you marry someone else and I will love you if you never marry at all, and spend your years wishing you had married me after all. That is how I will love you even as the world goes on its wicked way.â

American Girl stories were the best tbh
Dude, read the books, she and her mom freed themselves in Book 1. We donât disrespect American Girl in this house
Donât you dare disrespect Addy, or any of my girls for that matter. American Girl used to be legit. Good stories, good dolls, good movies.
Felicityâs story was set in the beginnings of the American Revolution, and addressed the conflict that she faced when her loved ones were split between patriots and loyalists. It also covered the effects of animal abuse, and forgiving those who are unforgivable.
Samanthaâs stories centered around the growth of industrial America, womenâs suffrage, child abuse, and corruption in places of power. Also, it emphasises how dramatically adoption into a caring family can turn a life around.
Kitâs story is one of my favorites. Her family is hit hard by the Great Depression, and they begin taking in boarders and raise chickens to help make ends meet. Her books include themes of poverty, police brutality, homelessness, prejudice, and the importance of unity in difficult times.
Mollyâs father, a doctor, is drafted during the Second World War. Throughout her story, friends of hers suffer the loss of their husbands, sons, and brothers overseas. Her mother leaves the traditional housewife position and works full-time to help with the war effort. They also take in an English refugee child, who learns to open up after a life of traumatic experience.
American Girl stories have always featured the very harsh realities of America through the years. But theyâre always presented honestly, yet in ways that kids can understand. They just go to show that you donât have to live in a perfect time to be a real American girl.
Dont you fucking dare disrespect the American Girls in my house. ESPECIALLY Addy!! That was my first REAL contact with the horrors of slavery, as I read about her father being whipped and sold and her mother escaping with her to freedom, but also how freedom was still a struggle.
A slave doll. Please. Read the books.
Donât forget Kirsten, the Swedish immigrant who had to deal with balancing her own culture and learning the english language and customs of her classmates, or Kaya (full name Kaya'aton'my, or She Who Arranges Rocks) , the brave but careless girl from the Nez Perce tribe, or Josefina, the Mexican girl learning to be a healer.
And then there are the later dolls, that kids younger than me would have grown up with (I was just outgrowing American Girl as these came out), like Rebecca, the Jewish girl who dreams of becoming an actress in the budding film industry, or Julie, who fights against her schoolâs gender policy surrounding sports in the 70s, or Nanea, the Hawaiian girl whose father worked at Pearl Harbor.
These books, these characters, are fantastic pictures into life for girls in America throughout the years, they pull no punches with the horrors that these girls had to face in their different time periods, and in many cases I learned more history from these series than social studies at school. And thatâs without even mentioning the âgirl of the yearâ series where characters are created in the modern world to help girls deal with issues like friend problems, moving, or bullying. We do NOT disrespect American Girl in this house.
That rabbit/hare post is messing me up. Iâd thought they were synonyms. Their development and social behavior are all different. They canât even interbreed. They donât have the same number of chromosomes. Dogs, wolves, jackals, and coyotes can mate with each other and have fertile offspring but rabbits and hares cant even make infertile ones bc they just die in the womb. Wack.
These
are more genetically compatible than These
and thatâs why morphology-based phylogeny has Issues
@aviculor
The problem is perspective. People always think dogs are the âstandardâ animal, the metric to use for whether or not two organisms âlook likeâ theyâre related. When in fact theyâre a massive outlier due to the fact that we fucked up this lineage of wolf beyond recognition with selective breeding. Itâs why people always say âbreedâ when they mean âspeciesâ, especially when talking about groups like lizards which canât even be defined cladistically since some of them are closer to snakes than each other. To say nothing of fish.
I once read an article that emphasized there is no such thing as a fish. Sharks and rays, lamprey, lobe-finned fish like lungfish and coelacanth, bichir and sturgeon, and of course the multiple infraclasses of more âmodernâ fish groups are all only very distantly related to one another. Theyâve maintained semi-similar body structures only because there are limited ways to efficiently move through water as a vertebrate.Â
This
And this
Are more distantly related from one another than you and I are from a lungfish
Which is absolutely fuckin wild.
Not only that, but all of us air-breathing land vertebrates, all the lizards and chickens and people and frogs, are closer to one another than those three âfishâ are to one another as well.
these
are genetically closer than these
andâŠ
these
are genetically closer than these
and my personal favorite, it really fucks with peopleâŠ
these
are more genetically similar than these
COOL.Â
just the other day, one of my friends mentioned this book, âDinosaurs: A Concise Natural History,â which apparently has a (tongue in cheek) chapter that argues that Cows are actually Fish.
