Hi! Nuance time.

As of today, many Chinese fanclubs for artists represented by GMMTV have decided to boycott the company or outright terminate their activities altogether. In response to this, I've seen a truly bewildering amount of western international fans celebrating as if that also means individual Chinese fans will be boycotting as well. And who knows, maybe many will. What repels me are the mean-spirited comments like, "Oh good, no more stalking!" and "I'm sure they're all devastated to lose their worst fans lmao" and the like.

Y'all.

This is gross behavior.

I don't care if there are a million toxic individuals in Chinese fandom. You cannot and should not tar an entire group of people. Hold yourselves to a higher standard than that. We are being actively encouraged by social media algorithms to be hateful and angry to each other, and we need to resist it. Not to sound dramatic, but our humanity depends on remembering to include nuance in these conversations.

Your pithy quote retweet dunking on Chinese people got you fifty-six retweets and three hundred twelve likes.

You may never meet the Chinese people you hurt with that tweet, but you lose a piece of your heart that way, too.

And I remain of the opinion that collective generalizations of Chinese fans is childish bullying at best and Sinophobic bigotry at worst. Toxic individuals in Chinese fandom shouldn't be made the face of Chinese fandom as a whole.

Plus, if we're going to judge entire nationalities in this fandom by their online behavior, I think everyone from 🇺🇸 my country 🇺🇸 needs to quiet down real quick.

We on this side of the internet don't even see a lot of Chinese fans because they're largely not on our social media platforms. You can't claim to know anything about them if you 1) don't speak their language, 2) hang out where they do, and/or 3) know them personally.

So before you celebrate this alleged Exodus of Chinese Fandom from Thai BL/GL Spaces, ask yourself, "Am I doing an Othering and Stereotyping right now? Am I getting caught up in Mean-Spirited Hysteria as part of a group bonding experience in which I am actively losing my own humanity to be an internet bully?"

Like, these two Chinese JuniorMark fans below just appeared on the algorithm for my burner account that mainly shows me KristSingto and BounPrem, so I'm sure there are plenty of others like them out there on the JuniorMark side of things.

Now, I do think GMMTV has prioritized their Chinese market above everyone else to the detriment of their Thai fanbase, and I think they've been sycophantic and idiotic in their handling of this whole situation, but that's still not the fault of individual Chinese fans.

They're part of our community, and they deserve common courtesy at the very least.
