[ DRAGON AGE SPOILERS RUN AWAY ]
Trying to piece together the bits that each of the Veilguard companions inherits from the legacy of Varric Tethras:
- Neve: nicknames (she calls romanced Rook “Trouble” and talks about nicknames while you’re walking around), and also the specific way she is devoted to Dock Town reminds me of Varric with Kirkwall
- Harding: physically she inherits a crossbow bolt, but also archery prowess in general; probably more nuanced cause she knew him longer
- Bellara: writing, she was inspired to start writing stories that are loosely based on her adventures during the game, with colorful embellishments and romance just like Varric
- Davrin: shirts that leave nothing to the imagination
- Lucanis: Varric’s quippy humor, his one-liners during combat and general reactions to things, probably more reminiscent because of Mary Kirby
- Emmrich: ?
- Taash: ?
Rook obviously inherits Varric’s role in the whole narrative, the job of being living glue, and beyond that however much or little the player wishes to imprint upon them.
Any and all additions are welcome. I’m going to keep ruminating on this.
i love this idea! here are my thoughts on emmrich & taash for the council’s consideration (lol):
Emmrich: he loves resolutely like Varric does. In DA2, he’s one of the few companions that got along with pretty much everyone. This is continued in DAI, when he befriends Cole (who everyone hates/is scared of/is confused by). In turn, Emmrich is very, very kind. Taash calls him a “skull-fucker” to his face, which is decidedly rude, and he still chooses to be polite and courteous to them. Although they present differently, they share the same general “i am tolerant and friendly to All” vibe.
Taash: while i think they don’t share many similarities with Varric, i do believe they both have very strong convictions: Taash, while they struggle with their identity as Qunari/Rivaini/Nonbinary/Adaari, they still maintain strong core principles. “Don’t be an asshole,” they would say. Doesn’t that sound familiar? As I played the games, I always found Varric to be a little uncomfortable with his dwarven identity. He struggled with how he should present himself, fighting against the general “dwarven pride” his older brother ascribed to and its styling (no beard, not a stoic warrior, HATER of caves and underground places). taash & varric, while not entirely certain of how they are, definitely know what is right and what is not. And i love that!
apologies for the rambling, i just love character study & i thought ur stuff above was SO spot on!

Day 7 of #Veiltober - Davrin Griffon Daddy.
Warden "glittering brown eyes" Davrin
Before Veilguard's release I was theorizing the Veilguard companion characters might have been designed to be parallels to the known Evanuris, but I couldn't place all of them.
Now that I've played the game (almost twice) I think I've figured them all out.
Rook - Elgar'nan, the leader. Controller of light and dark. The one who influences the others.
Neve - Mythal, who can be a fierce protector or a source of inspiration and hope.
Harding - Andruil, the hunter, who went mad from the Void and had to fight her way back
Bellara - June, the inventor. Master of magical artifact.
Lucanis - Dirthamen, keeper of secrets, who mastered the twin ravens of Fear and Deceit, and returned from death.
Davrin - Ghilan'nain, Master of Monsters, Keeper of Halla.
Emmrich - Falon'Din, the necromancer. Friend of the dead.
Taash - Sylaise, who's fire cannot be quenched.
Which leaves Solas to play the role he always has - Fen'Harel, the trickster and betrayer, who could ally with them, if only they will listen to his advice and try to protect their world as best as they can.
“He sang a lot.
He’d sing to the halla.”
ok ok listen. mythal and solas's fucked up relationship puts everything about solavellan into context. how hyper-aware he was of the unequal power dynamic in their relationship, his guilt over his own desire for her and how he pulls away every time, the overwhelming feeling of falling in love with a god(dess), he tells mythal "i would follow you anywhere" and if lavellan begs him in trespasser to let her follow he refuses her. "i would not have you see what i become" and "there is only death on this journey". he will not drag her into his mess the way mythal dragged him into hers. he will not pollute her from her purpose the way mythal polluted him. he will not allow her the guilt and blood on her hands because he was her. he has been in her exact position, yearning for a god's affections and willing to follow them anywhere. and he loves her too much to treat her the way he was treated. of course he cannot be with her. of course he has to leave her. and he can only allow her to join him when he is freed of his burden and his path changes to one of atonement. of course she can join him in his atonement, even if it is ugly. because it will not sully her hands with blood. he can only accept her love and support when he knows it will not come at the cost of her morality and the good person she is. everything he does to her, even the betrayal, is to avoid subjecting her to the exact same thing mythal subjected him to.
so i was able to get solas's banter with davrin....

The only reason Blackwall doesn’t look like this in game is because if he did look like this no one would want to sleep with egg man or the catholic cop

22 years later and the Crows are still cringing over Zevran. Truly the man of all time.
i do love that the first thing lucanis does when he arrives is make a grocery list. then he cleans the kitchen, sets the table, and starts the kitchen fire. then he goes to the market and gets everyone a personalized Little Treat. then he gets his Own little treat in the form of a coffee. then he just stuffs himself into an actual cupboard and broods. he just hangs out there. in the dark. im obsessed with him. this man was imprisoned for the past year with nothing but a literal demon for company and his first instinct is to care for and feed the party. his second instinct is to be emo. iconic behavior.
Solas being in the Fade in Inquisition: oh my goodness this is the Fade! I’ve never physically been here before! Look at it! It’s so beautiful! Inquisitor come and look at this!
