It’s incredible how taking the loneliness out of creativity can transform motivation/sheer availability of ideas. I can write, when there’s someone to chat about the story and process with me. I can draw a piece over time, if I can share the process with someone. I can devote the needed time to historical research for the epistolary story my friend and I are doing through the mail. I can do an art/writing swap with a friend where the pieces play off each other.

And there’s a tricky balance. It mustn’t become attention-seeking, but the work is enriched by being something that creates connection. Other people don’t owe me their time or encouragement, and making the project happen is ultimately on me, with a need for healthy boundaries. But thriving happens in community. It’s not always by necessity that art is isolated. And more love can be mixed into the ingredients when they’re being stirred in the middle of a friendly back and forth. It also means the project grows up in a context of humility and trust (because sharing a work in progress involves both these things.) Also a context of shared joy.

ngl I’ve been rlly tempted to quit my writing/fandom acoounts over the last few months but I always assumed not going through was because of being cowardly LOL. But today I’m feeling there’s so much unpredictability in my life rn that it’s nice to have a space where I know how my feed will look tonight more or less. Or a word doc that doesn’t multiply itself and become some other monster overnight 🫩

i think as a writer, the older you get and the more you read, the more you realize there are very few actual truly bad ideas. which is a relief. but! the other thing you learn is that stories live and die on the execution and ha ha. lemme tell you. unfortunately. there are lots and lots of bad ways to execute an otherwise fine idea
