Thinking about intermittent reinforcement. A type of conditioning where rewards are given at random rather than consistently, causing the brain to begin developing compulsive patterns around the reward giving behavior because even if it didn't work this time then maybe, just maybe, next time you'll get that reward.

Thinking about Stephanie Brown, desparate for approval, trying again and again to save the day in such a manner that maybe any of the adults in her life will see her potential and take her under their wing. Watching as Tim and Cass get consistent training and approval and support from Bruce and Babs and (sometimes) Dinah, while she gets the occasional compliment or training session or mission before being kicked to the curb, again and again and again. But she keeps trying, because maybe next time they'll see. Maybe next time she'll be part of the in crowd. Maybe some day she'll be worth it.
