Another weekend at the country club. Should be relaxing right? Wrong! Another weekend at the country club means another weekend of your lifeguard shift.
Heather was nowhere to be seen this time. You assumed she was frolicking with her friends somewhere cool where the sun doesn’t shine this bright, while you’re here guarding the pool under the blazing summer heat.
God help me.
You sat at the tall chair, boringly staring at the pool with your arms crossed, you sighed, “When will this hell of a shift end?”
“For you m’lady”
Your whole body jolted, snapping your head towards the voice, only to find Rodrick smiling smugly and offering you a glass of orange juice.
A wide smile grew on your face as your hand reached out towards the glass, “Oh my gosh! Just what I needed! Thank you, Rodrick!”
Rodrick’s heart fluttered as you accidentally grasped his hand holding the glass, sparks igniting throughout his whole body from the mere contact.
He fixed his opened button up and cleared his throat, trying to play it cool like his heart isn’t pattering hard on his chest, “So, uhh..w-what do you say we leave this place?”
Rodrick mentally sighed in relief as he thanked the Gods he didn’t mess up the one line (that he got from a romcom his mom watches) he practiced over and over before he got there.
“Uhm, to where?” You awkwardly chuckled.
Rodrick put his sunglasses on and leaned one arm on your chair, “The beach.”
You almost giggled at his cute antics and how he was trying to play it cool, but your sappy feeling soon grew into a tree of despair and doom as you realized you were stuck being a lifeguard against your will this weekend.
“Oh..Sorry, Rodrick. I can’t ditch my shift,” Your shoulders slumped down as you sadly looked down at the boy, “I made a deal with mom and dad, and I really want my car back.”
Rodrick’s shoulders also slumped, his smug smile also slumping into an expression similar to a dejected puppy. Noticing his reaction, you immediately tried to comfort him.
“We can go tomorrow if you’re still up for it? I don’t have anything important to do tomorrow so..y’know” You shrugged at him.
Rodricks face instantly lit up and pointed finger guns at you, “Okay! See you!”
“See you!” You waved at him with a gleaming smile on your face.
“Pick you up at 11AM!” Rodrick headed straight off towards the exit as he shouted, waving a hand towards you and mirroring the same gleaming smile on your face.
In fact, his smile was much brighter than yours.
Oooo beach day!
Finally, the day where you get to take a rest and bask in the sun in peace has come. No running kids to tell off, no annoying rich people, just you, Rodrick, and food!
You heard a tire screech outside your house, making you jerk up from your lazily tapping on the phone. A white van came into view as you excitedly looked out the window, Rodrick then coming out from the driver's side.
Quickly gathering your things, you looked in the mirror, fixing yourself and popping open your gloss. You smacked your lips together and checked yourself for the last time before sprinting down, hoping your dad hasn't opened the door before you.
Your stomping echoed, making your mom peek out of the laundry room, scolding you, "Be careful, Y/N! I told you not to run down the stairs!"
"Sorry mom!"
You bolted to the front door, your bag almost falling from your shoulder. You frowned as you saw your dad already at the door, staring at an awkward and somewhat nervous Rodrick. Rodrick sighed in relief as he heard you chuckle and softly pushed Mr. Jefferson out of the way, "That's enough scaring, dad. You've met Rodrick before."
Rodrick forced a smile at Mr. Jefferson, his smile coming off as awkward while Mr. Jefferson glare remained. You took Rodrick's wrist and pulled him towards the van, looking back and waving a hand at your father while walking, "Bye dad!"
He smiled at you, waving back. Rodrick then waved at him too, smiling too awkwardly, "Yeah, b-bye...dad..?"
Mr. Jefferson shifted his gaze at the young man, his expression immediately fell into a deadpan stare, not reciprocating Rodrick's wave. Rodrick slowly lowered his hand with a gulp as he looked away. Instead, he opened the passenger seat for you to avoid your father's glare which sent chills down his spine.
You smiled at Rodrick as you buckled yourself, he pressed his lips together, smiling back at you and closed the door. He scrambled towards the driver's seat, wanting to escape your father's gaze as soon as possible.
Your escapade towards the beach began. Your eyes remained outside, watching people and houses pass by while Rodrick popped a tape on the dashboard. Loud music blasted through the van as both of you bopped to the music, you whispered the lyrics from time to time while Rodrick tapped his fingers on the wheel.
You then searched through your bag. Rodrick glanced over in curiosity, seeing you take out a camera. The digicam let out a shutter sound as it opened, you turned the camera at Rodrick, smiling at him, "Smile!"
Rodrick only glanced for a second before looking back at the road, holding out a peace sign at the camera. You giggled as you took the picture and immediately pressed the photos to look at it.
"Look! You look cute!" You lifted the picture up to Rodrick, him looking at it and shook his head, grinning.
As the houses faded away into trees, you took a picture of every pretty thing you saw, then took a few pictures of yourself. Once you were satisfied, you tucked the camera in your bag. The smile on your face never left, you felt refreshed.
Then, a memory suddenly popped on your mind, making you lean over the dashboard and turning the music down a bit to talk to Rodrick.
"Why'd you turn it down?"
"I was just wondering.." You turned to look at him, making yourself comfortable on your seat, "Why did you leave so quickly at the country club?"
Rodrick's eyebrows raised as his mouth formed an 'o' shape, eyes still fixed on the road. He lopsidedly smiled, slightly wincing, "I..kinda asked mom to help me a little bit on preparing our food."
You pursed your lips and nodded, slowly looking away from him. Softly muttering an 'okay' and leaned forward to turn the music up again.
It was true, the reason really was that Rodrick had to ask his mom to help him prepare nice and edible foods to bring for you at the beach.
It wasn’t an easy preparation for Rodrick as he got teased the whole time by his mother, then his father, then Greg, and lastly, Manny. He got teased by a not-yet-that-verbal toddler. Rodrick doesn’t know how, but Manny’s repeated shouting of ‘Rodrick’ and ‘date’ irked him.
And he physically cannot do anything about it.
All he could do was give them a forced grin and a fake laugh as his mom was doing him a big favor of preparing the food. It can really ruin your date if it turns out horrible. Rodrick feared that if he even said a bit of opposition, his mom will take it back and stop helping him and Rodrick cannot cook shit for the life of him.
And for the record—It is a date. He’s just too embarrassed to admit it in front of his family.
But, you didn’t need to know all that, so he completely scratched the part where he got teased and only told you about his mom helping him a little bit with the food.
His mom would smack him right now if she heard Rodrick say she only helped him just a bit because all Rodrick ever did the whole time was stand beside her and steal bits of the food behind her back.
Music continued blasting on Rodrick's van. Rodrick started screaming his lungs out to the lyrics as you imitated him, occasionally opening snacks.
You opened a Cheetos bag whilst you sat lazily on the passenger seat. Rodrick took a double take at you, trying to not lose focus on the road and looking at what you just opened. He held his palm out to you, "I want some."
Taking two pieces from the bag, you raised your hand to his lips and completely ignored his palm. Rodrick's head jerked back in shock, his eyebrows knitted together and eyes widened as he stole glances at you, the Cheetos near his lips, and the road whilst you sat there, unmoving, and smiling at him.
Rodrick hesitated, then ate the Cheetos. A faint blush on his cheeks as he felt his heart pound on his chest, murmuring, "Thanks.."
You let out a satisfied hum, grabbing another Cheeto and looking out the window once again, occasionally feeding Rodrick food which he gladly took.
The ride made your stomachs full and aching with all the laughter. Your hearts are full and somehow contented, already never wanting this day to end.
Trees slowly faded as the van moved onward, until the sun completely shone on your face. The brightness of it blinded you for a second, then the sea and sand came into view down the hill. The rhythmic tide shimmered against the sunlight, sand in a golden shade, and uncrowded. You have never seen something so pretty.
This is probably one of the few times you were okay with basking under the sun.
You rolled down your window, Rodrick glancing at you in concern when you unbuckled your seatbelt. He then panicked when he saw you kneel on your seat, popping your upper body out the window, "Hey, hey, What are you doing?!"
"This is so fucking amazing, Rodrick!"
Rodrick grinned at you, concern still slightly etched on his expression. The wind blew on your hair as you looked at the beach, your face warm while your heart rushed in excitement. You closed your eyes and breathed in the salty scent of the sea, letting out a refreshed exhale.
You peeped back down at Rodrick, your smile wide and bright, excitedly kicking your heels, "This is what summer is all about!"
Rodrick felt his heart swell seeing how happy you were to be there, feeling so proud of himself for this idea.
You sat back down with a content sigh, the smile never leaving your face. You faced Rodrick and saw him smiling widely at the road while stealing subtle glances at you.
"What?" You said with a giggle.
His pursed his lips as his eyes remained on the road, "Nothing.."
"It's just..." Hesitance was clear on his voice, quickly clearing his throat like he just tried to cough up his disappearing boldness. He muttered, "You're really pretty.."
You blinked at him and giggled, "You're really pretty as well, Rodrick."
His face was now turning red, a nervous (and a bit confused) smile on his face while his heart raced and butterflies filled his stomach, "W-What?"
You smirked, wanting to tease him. You leaned forward, your scent filling his nose, his legs almost giving up on him as you poked his shoulder.
"You're a really pretty boy."
Now Rodrick felt like he was about to combust.
He felt like he was about to throw up the butterflies that rapidly multiplied inside his stomach, and he felt hotter than before. Rodrick was trying to focus on the road, doing everything in his power to ignore your piercing stare at him. He just hoped his legs won't turn to jello and give up on him mid-drive.
Meanwhile, you were watching him in amusement. Observing how his face turned redder than before, his adam's apple bobbing as he gulped with pursed lips, and his eyes darting everywhere besides yours.
Rodrick mentally sighed in relief when you both reached the parking lot, and immediately unbuckled his seatbelt when he sloppily parked the van in a rush.
You were unbuckling your seatbelt when you got startled by his side of the door suddenly slamming shut. You momentarily stared at it and giggled, entirely amused by how shy Rodrick became, his boldness completely dissipated.
Rodrick slid the van's back door open while you slammed yours shut. He gathered both of your things while you fixed yourself on the side mirror.
You turned around and faced Rodrick, seeing him carrying both of your things, "I feel awkward stripping on the beach. Is it okay if I change in the van? I'll meet you there after."
Rodrick shrugged and nodded his head, "No problem"
He started walking towards the sand, the brightness of the sun made him squint. Meanwhile, you got in the back of the van and slid the door close.
Rodrick found a spot, a bit far from the shore but closer to a tall rock he thought you might want to take pictures at. (Also because he could jump from there to the ocean)
He dropped the cooler and the bag with an exhausted sigh. He wiped his sweat on his forehead, leaning down and placing his hands on his knees, "Damn, it's hot."
Rodrick sighed again before setting up the umbrella and bringing out a blanket from the bag, laying it down properly on the sand. He took a soda from the cooler and laid down on his side, putting on his shades and propping his head up with his hand.
He wasn't a fan of being under the bright sun, well, his astigmatism refrained him from enjoying it. Kinda hard to admire the view when you're squinting the whole time.
After a while of squinting and sipping, a shadow suddenly casted over him, he looked at them from feet to the head, slowly removing his shades once he realized it was you.
You were wearing a bikini, showing off your body. The sun hitting your skin making it glisten under the sun.
You were glowing.
He didn't even try to hide he was ogling at you while you handed him an orange bottle and laid face down next to him, his gaze never leaving you.
"Put sunscreen on my back, please."
Rodrick snapped out of his thoughts, popping the bottle open, "o-okay."
He squeezed some on his hand then reached out to apply it on your back. His touch was light like he was scared to touch you and you could feel how his hands were shaking.
"Relax Rodrick. I could feel your hands shaking." You called out, voice muffled on your hand.
Rodrick inhaled sharply, trying to stabilize his hands. He quickly applied the sunscreen all over your back, feeling like he was going to have a heart attack if he did it any longer.
"Done!" Rodrick quickly blurted out, closing the bottle and handing it back to you before laying back to where he was, avoiding your eyes once again.
You stared at him while still laying flat on your tummy. You held back your laugh, opting to grab something from the food as you sat up.
He saw you reaching out to get the food and grabbed it before you, insisting on setting it all up himself. Of course, you let him do it. I mean, who would say no to princess treatment?
After he set the food up, you gasped at it, your mouth hanging open as you looked at what Rodrick and his mom prepared.
Different fruits, skewers, wraps, potato salad, and nachos with dip. Absolutely the best beach picnic food you'd ever have.
Rodrick watched your reaction as he proudly smirked, your eyes were sparkling at the food as your mouth watered. You grinned at him, "Let's eat!"
The food was almost gone and it hasn't even been an hour since you two ate. You both sat while watching the sea and other people swim, still feeling full.
"That food was amazing."
Rodrick tipped his head back, rubbing his stomach like a pregnant woman, "Ugh, I feel like my stomach's about to explode!"
"Wow, I sure hope it won't," You raised your eyebrow at him and snickered, "It'd be horrible if I had to clean your guts on this beach."
Rodrick winced at the thought, a disgusted look formed on his face as he gazed at you which only made you laugh harder.
"That's so disgusting."
"You started it!"
He grabbed a bit of sand and threw it at you, "I didn't mean it like that!"
You blocked the sand with your palms as you laughed uncontrollably, earning an eye roll from him. You leaned towards him, a mischievous smile on your face, squinting and pointing your finger at him, "You're so sassy!"
He smacked your pointed finger down as you chuckled and shook your head at his response.
You looked around you, trying to find your hair clamp, grabbing it and putting your hair up before standing up, placing your hands on your hips and gazing down at Rodrick, "Swim?"
A smirk tugged at Rodrick’s lips as he stood up in a flash. You were startled and ran away from him while he chased after you.
One thing about you; you didn’t like being chased.
And that became clear when your laughing turned into frightened screams, trying to negotiate with him as you stopped and turned around to face him, your hands in front of you in defense. Unfortunately for you, Rodrick was oblivious to your frightened screams, mistaking it as you being playful as he tried to taunt you.
“Stop!” You tittered, flinching backwards as he taunted at you again with a grin on his face. He then began sprinting towards you making you panic and you bellowed, “I said stop!”
Your yell startled Rodrick as his steps halted, his eyes widening in surprise as he took in your appearance, now noticing you were seriously panicked. He slowly approached you, and held both your shoulders, his eyes showing concern as he stared into yours, “Are you okay?”
“I’m–I’m fine,” You nodded, “It’s just..I don’t really like it when i’m being chased.”
Rodrick felt guilty, he suddenly pulled you into his chest with his hand on the back of your head and the other on your back. You squeaked, body stiffening and eyes widening in surprise.
“Sorry I scared you..”
As your tense body loosened up, you returned his embrace, relaxing onto his body, “It’s okay.”
The sun was hot but the warmth of the embrace was comforting.
Rodrick then pulled away from the hug while you, who wanted to hug him longer, leaned towards him, trying to reach for the warmth of his body but he stepped back from you.
“Let’s get you something to drink.” He smiled at you.
You instantly blushed, no not because of the summer heat, but because of Rodrick unexpectedly reaching out to you and clasping your hands together as he lead you back.
You were quiet and red, only staring at the back of his messy hair with wide eyes like a deer caught in the headlights. Unbeknownst to you, he also was blushing, he cursed himself for acting too quickly without thinking as he feared he made you uncomfortable.
As both of you were near the umbrella, you looked away and tried to calm your thumping heart and warm cheeks, putting a palm over your face.
Relax, relax , relax. Think of something else.
You exhaled as you calmed your beating heart, sitting down next to Rodrick who already had soda on his hand and offering you another, opening it for you.
He lifted his soda up to his lips, then retreating as he faced you, “Let’s swim later after we rest, okay?”
You pursed your lips and nodded, sipping on your soda. A high pitched voice echoed on the beach out of the blue, “Y/N?!”
Was that..?
You turned around to see Heather Hills running towards you in her tankini. You looked around confused as she approached you, “Heather? What are you doing here?”
Heather stood in front of you, her arms crossed on her chest as a smirk grew on her face, “I took a day off!”
“What?!” You shrieked, “Who’s lifeguarding at the country club then?”
“Oh! uhm..about that..” She crouched down and whispered on your ear, “I asked your ex to lifeguard for us.”
“Oh my god..” You were in disbelief, hands going up to massage your temple.
Heather chuckled, “Anyways, I have to go tan now. Have fun!”
You smiled at her, lifting your hand halfway to wave at her when you suddenly remembered what Heather told you about Rodrick and her. You abruptly turned to look back at Rodrick, expecting him to be staring at Heather’s direction, but he wasn’t.
You were surprised to see him not even sparing a glance at Heather as you looked back and forth from him and your friend. Rodrick’s eyes remained forward and watching the sea, sipping on his soda like his childhood crush didn’t just approach you and had a full blown conversation with you.
And that's when you knew for sure—Jessica really is full of shit.
That small act that you saw from Rodrick today made you trust him more, the thoughts of him leaving you for a prettier girl completely vanishing. A small smile tugged on your lips while your heart felt warmer than sunlight on your skin.
“Hey! You haven’t put on sunscreen yet!”
Rodrick tensed up at what you said and shook his head at you, making you raise you eyebrow and lift your sunscreen filled palm, a smirk growing on your face.
Oh no…
