Love love love characters that present themselves as emotionally open social butterflies but the more you see of them the more obvious it is that they’re the most closed off fuckers in the story. Sure, they want to help you with your personal problems and messy emotions, but if you turn that shit back on them, they’ll shut down or deflect every time. Why are you sticking your nose in their business anyway? It’s not like it matters. They’re not a person, they’re just a role being played. They’re the guy who fixes things and saves people. Please ignore the man behind the mask, he’s fine. Everything’s fine.

#only the first sentence but; Tim from House of Windows #he's SO nosy when it comes to Nick's business #but the second Nick asks even a remotely personal question he gets so snappy and it ends in a row #two emotionallly incompetent disasters <3

Pin-Lee suggesting that Murderbot start reacting to its injuries more to let humans know it’s been injured after realizing that it’s been casually walking around after a fight leaving a trail of Fluids. It’s like “I could.. probably write some code for that I guess.” and Dr. Mensah is like “don’t worry about it if it would be distracting to you. Just…. tell us afterwards. We want to know how you’re doing” and it’s like “i can give status reports yes.”

Pin-Lee is like “I still like the idea of you giving an indication you’ve been hit. For example.” she points finger guns. “Bang oh no I have definitely hit you with a projectile. Indicate that somehow.”

Murderbot, with extremely flat inflection which would not immediately seem like a distress call to nearby humans: “Ouch. I Have Been Injured.”

Pin-Lee is like “hm no there’s gotta be some sort of. I don’t know, you don’t have to verbalize if you don’t want to, maybe there’s like an alarm noise you could make? or an “AAA!” sound? Okay let’s try again BANG”

There is a brief delay (less then a second) and then Murderbot responds with damage vocalization option 2.

“File:Wilhelm_Scream.ogg” blasts through the station.

I want to see more platonic relationships and in general more books where there is zero romance and zero mention of it

I highly recommend checking out Nicole Kornher-Stace’s books! They have absolutely zero trace of romance, not even side characters (other than like, mentions of parents/families). Her books centre on ride-or-die friendships, and m/f friendships. follow her on twitter, too! she’s always tweeting about this sort of thing.

Archivist Wasp & Latchkey (YA) are about a ghosthunter priestess who meets the ghost of a supersoldier looking for his platonic soulmate. Firebreak (Adult) is a near-future dystopia about a girl who discovers a conspiracy about NPCs in the game she streams. The way they give the same depth to friendships as most romantic subplots are given is so good. Also: she has a free short story called Mulberry Down which has similar themes!

Some other books without romance, that centre on friendships! (Some of these have mentions of romance, or side characters; but in general they fit my requirements)

Big fan of how Murderbot's most basic reaction to any scenario at any time is "acquire drone army". Even when things are mostly peaceful it just collects drones. I'd say that's its number two hobby after watching media

Drones are part of its sensory system. If I needed glasses to see properly and I kept having my glasses broken or confiscated and all of my enemies coincidentally had the same glasses prescription as me I’d be stealing any glasses I came across too.
