Superboy Prime, Action Comics #1100
forget-me-not
my primehood ita bag if anyone gaf
Had a dream last night where I called the suicide hotline and it was PRIME who answered and to console me he was like “Think of all the World’s Foulest Comics that are yet to come out yet!” 💀
WHY DID YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS PULL THIS
41 years since his first appearance?? holy unc...
I was stalking your twitter (I hope that’s alright btw, I just think you’re cool) and I wanted to ask you why you thought Prime was sexless? It’s totally alright if you don’t wanna answer btw! I was just curious.
Of course it's alright, I'm very flattered! Here's a bit of context for everyone reading:
My opinions on Prime's sexuality is twofold, it's mainly inspired by how he acted before this current run on Superman and also based partially on me projecting because that's kind of how things go around here. That's all to say that I have a real reasoning for it but it's a personal headcanon before it's analysis.
Anyway, to put it simply under a label, I think he's aro/ace-spec, or demisexual/demiromantic specifically. I think this because he has never read to me as a particularly sexually inclined character. Not that most characters do, but I have several reasons:
For starters, despite being depicted as at least somewhat misogynistic as a villain (See Countdown and Tales of the Sinestro Corps: Superman-Prime), he's never actually made any real sexual comments to women. A really telling example is in Countdown to Final Crisis issue 24, where he says this:
I'm not the biggest fan of Countdown's actual characterization of him because I think it's very "for the plot", so to speak, but I like their voice for him because I think it's very fitting. This is a good example, where he shows extreme entitlement (which I don't really like in this specific scenario because I don't think it makes sense for him to "expect" Wonder Woman to be his girlfriend in any scenario, even acknowledging how entitled he usually is. Ironically the rest of this page is pretty good imo) but he says "Maybe I'll ask her to a movie." which is a very innocent and childish view of romance. It's basically "I've only seen rom-coms" level of innocent.
He also describes her, as in Laurie, as pretty. This is consistent with him, he always describes her as a pretty girl, and he doesn't really exhibit romantic or sexual or aesthetic attraction to anyone else because Laurie takes up so much space in his head. Obviously you can interpret this in any number of ways (ex. nostalgia poisoning, obsession, etc) but I like to think it's because Laurie sits in a space in his head that is very difficult to replace. He's described Laurie as his best friend, and she's also the only girl he's ever loved.
That is all to say that I see Prime as the kind of person who only falls in love with people who he has a strong, emotional connection with already. Otherwise it's not even something he thinks about.
I've said this before but Prime is also a very sheltered, naive character to me. Like yes, he's desensitized to gore, and he's quite rude and unlikable, but he's still a kid on the inside who reads comics to ignore the shitty stuff happening around him and deflects responsibility for doing bad things and doesn't really get how other people think quite yet because he stopped having "normal" interactions at 15. As a result, I tend to think of him as the type who ignores sex because it's an "adult thing".
Well that is all to say that my friend Ara also said this and this is basically the three interpretations of him I like the most
That was really long and kinda unorganized and messy but I have a lot of thoughts about his sexuality lmao. I think he's some mixture of the above.
