Review: Picasso At The Lapin Agile
I had the sincere pleasure of being in the audience for The Present Company's last performance of Picasso at the Lapin Agile at the Museum Of Human Achievement a few weeks ago. Even with near freezing temps descending upon Austin that night, it was a sold out crowd for what can only be described as the most cohesive, well rounded, polished and truly, beautiful expression of (and love letter to) the creative process that I've had the pleasure of witnessing in this town. The audience was perfectly immersed into the experience as bar patrons, surrounding the cast, which was flawless in its interpretation of Steve Martins' work, bringing each character to full realization from the outset. Martins' personality and unique comedic tone shone through much of the dialogue, which helped add relief to the more emotional or existential exchanges.
Honestly, even after having so much time to digest and reflect, a performance that singular, that perfect in it's delivery, is still difficult to describe. Add bottles of wine, amazing surrealist art hand picked to accompany the show, a unique venue, and an accordionist who could play you to tears, and the end result is easily one of the highlights of creative expression manifested locally. It's the evening by which all others will be compared to for a long time to come. Thank you Steve Martin, The Present Company, and everyone who had a part in making this event happen. It was perfect.
