Sometimes I wonder what the world would be like if there was no patriarchy, no gender roles, no men.

I imagine I'd be more secure in myself. I would be less afraid to allow my body to exist as it naturally is. I could jump into a lake shirtless and never feel the real or imagined lingering eyes on my back. There would be no "man-peering-through-the-keyhole" psychological phenomenon women experience - the urge to always be palatable to the male gaze. I could feel completely comfortable cutting all my hair off in the summer so I could comfortably tend to my garden without sweat dripping from my hair. There would be no "does this hairstyle fit my face" bullshit that men interestingly never subject themselves to. I would walk home alone at night in the city and I wouldn't feel the urge to check behind me every minute. I could stretch my arms high in the air without the urge to immediately put them back down lest others see that I am human enough to grow body hair - to be human as a woman in this world is to be a beast - I could lay on the warm sands of a beach without the urge to cover my legs with a towel for the same reason. I wouldn't ever feel anxiety when making connections with other women because I would know with confidence they won't sell me out for a corn chip of validation from the patriarchy, because there wouldn't be one. Other women wouldn't look down on me for existing against the grain. And there wouldn't be the other kind of human to beat, rape or kill me for the same. Other women wouldn't be pushing their daughters, themselves, or me to conform to the identity of "decorative object to be oggled" because there would never have been anyone to start the demand.

I could rip my clothes off and grow my claws, my fangs. I could become the beast I'm meant to be. I could run to a hilltop with my sisters under a full moon and dance around a fire while we howl "This is freedom! This is freedom! This is freedom!" We could laugh heartily, loudly. We could feast decadently on all the delicious things we deny ourselves. We could take up all of the space we desire. We could love - truly love - one another and the Earth. Life would flourish.

I am deeply saddened that will never be the world.

Simple but effective changes I make to my language:

Referring to women as women or ladies, and not girls.

Female as default language

Assuming animals are female, unless it’s obvious said animal is male (visible genitalia, highly sexually dimorphic species such as chickens, etc)

Abstaining from using female-specific insults or ones that denigrate femaleness (bitch, cunt, pussy, etc)

Abstaining from using “guys” to refer to mixed-sex groups

Saying “lesbians and bi women” instead of cutesy nebulous terms such as “wlw” or “sapphic”

Using “sex” instead of “gender” and “sex roles/stereotypes” instead of “gender roles”

Using anatomically correct terminology to refer to women’s genitalia instead of referring to all of it as “vagina”

I hate how feminism has become so commodified and soaked in bourgeois individualism. I don't give a fuck about one woman being empowered by something, I want the big picture. The idea that any action is inherently feminist is fucking stupid, too--"Lots of women do this thing, so clearly it's feminist and supports women! A confidence boost is not structural empowerment.

Putting on makeup every day can make you feel confident and happy with yourself as an individual — but in a society that systematically shames women into investing absurd amounts of money and time into cosmetic products and procedures that are not demanded of their male counterparts just to be considered ‘presentable’, conforming to those expectations is not empowering. Defying them is.

Having an OnlyFans might well be considered by individual women as ‘safe’, and a way to have control when engaging in sex work. But in a society where prostitution goes hand in hand with human trafficking, and where the overwhelming majority of victims are female while the majority of traffickers are male, further normalising the act of selling your body is in no way empowerment for women as a group. It may help individual women financially, it may feel like a safe enough way for them to engage in sex work, it may even be a free choice for some — but it reinforces a system in which men feel entitled to buy access to women’s bodies. It reinforces a system of oppression where demand for ‘service providers’ is met by abusing the powerless and those who don’t have a choice. For women at large, the normalisation and embracing of sex work as a profession is not empowering.

Claiming that male and female are meaningless categories may well feel liberating for individuals who are privileged enough to be able to consider gender identity as fluid and a personal feeling rather than something which is socially constructed and enforced. But when this makes us unable to discuss female infanticide, sex-selective abortions, child brides, girls’ lack of access to education, sex-based patterns of sexual assault and domestic violence, reproductive rights and so on — all of which are oppressive practices which have nothing to do with a personal sense of gender and everything to do with being born female — then who are we really empowering by doing away with ‘useless’ terminology?

You can’t look at individual women’s actions and claim that since something feels empowering to one of them, then it must be a feminist act. Looking at societal trends is important. Recognising patterns is important. And yes, generalising is important. You don’t achieve systemic change and liberation by only empowering individuals. You do it by fighting against the (re)production of structures of oppression. To do that, you have to see the big picture.
