"I have my own, thank you. Unfortunately humans can't eat raw meat, makes us sick." The human got a container of of the dry reeds, and opened it, revealing a bunch of steaming, deliciously fried chicken. He takes out a leg and bites into it. "Oh, they did a really good job with this..."

“Feh, pity.” The kelpie shrugged, resuming her snatching of the raw wing. It crunched wonderfully between her teeth and she went for more. JJ really did know how to pick quality meat.

She could easily pick up the scent of the fried oil and spices of JJ’s meal. Nettle glanced up, half a leg bone sticking out of her mouth. “Cooked meat’s a’right, little burnt though. Fo’ my tastes. Eat all yea’ want, I’m fine with what I got.”

“Where did yea’ get this chicken, anyway?”

Beside him JJ had hidden something under a cloth; taking it off he revealed a large bucket of all sorts of pieces of raw, bloody chicken. "How's this for a birthday dinner?"

Nettle’s nose twitched and her ears pricked. She hadn’t eaten chicken for a long wile. “It’s the best kind of dinner.” She grinned, licking the points of her fangs. “You spoil me.”

She leaned over to grab a bloody wing, but paused. “Oh, where are my manners. JJ, lad, would you like some?”

The human carefully slipped the necklace onto Nettle's muscular neck and took a step back. He wolf-whistles, "Looks good on you! I was also thinking of making something to clip to your mane or tail, but I ran out of time. You know what I did have time to grab, though?" He smirks.

Once draped over her neck, Nettle shook the necklace till it slipped down into it’s proper place. She admired the green jade against her green skin, pleased my JJ’s choice in jewelry. “It does look good on me, doesn’t it.” She smirked, wondering how her reflection would look.

“As ravishin’ as I’d look with a clip, jus’ the necklace will do.” She sighed dramatically. “What else did you get?”

"I'm really glad you like it, took me months to make the beads out of red oak and cedar, not to mention finding a bit of pure Jade. Anyway, how should I put it on you without me sticking to you?" He chuckled.

Nettle had no idea if red oak and cedar even grew around her, never-the-less where one could find Jade. The ground, probably. Or a shop. Humans liked collecting shiny rocks, yes?

“I’m not sticky all the time. Only when I want ta be. Then it wears off.” The kelpie huffed, a few pieces of mane floating in her face. “Lucky fo’ the both of us, it has worn off.”

Though a bit stiffly, Nettle lowered her head in front of JJ for him to slip the necklace on her.

JJ jumped at the sudden voice, nearly falling into the water. He turned and pulled out a string of beads, with a chuck of jade at the end cut to look like a nettle leaf. "Here, I made this for you, even pit a bit of my chi-energy into it. It'll keep you safe. From what, I don't know, bit I hope you like it." he smiled warmly.

The kelpie snorted a bit at JJ’s surprise, pulling her head back sharply. “I’m wasn’t that quite.” She grumbled, trotting out of the woods and out onto the bank.

She tilted her head curiously as the human revealed her present. Nettle nosed it, again sniffing the jewelry. Jade and beads, simple, but very intriguing to the kelpie.“There’s alot I could be kept safe from. Evil beasties.” She mentioned off handily.

“It’s...beautiful.” Nettle admitted truthfully. “And I noticed the leaf, how charmin’. “Thankyou JJ. I’ll accept yo’ offerin’.” She snickered softly. “Its a lovely present.”

"Hey, Nettle, since it's your birthday, I brought you something to celebrate." The human waited by the water's edge for the kelpie to surface.

Nettle, however, was somewhere completely out of character.

She was on land. Several feet behind JJ, deep in the thicket. She had been on her way back to the sanctuary of her lake, taking a short cut thought the trees, but the human seemed to have beat her too it.

After he spoke, she stretched out her neck to lightly sniff him, taking care to only slightly exhale on his neck.

“I’m flattered you remembered.” She chuckled behind him, taking a step forward into the damp earth. “Well, don’t be shy. Give it here.”

“..... Please.”

(( So I guess it’s Nettle’s birthday tomorrow. May 4th is when I think I created this blog, so let’s go with that. 

I’ll probably do something for, I dunno. We’ll see~ ))

Characters saving a kelpie’s life when it’s injured or trapped and starving because it's scared and you don’t just let an intelligent creature die like that

Kelpies that seek out humans and trick them into climbing on their backs and kidnap them but they don’t eat them they just drag them halfway across the country and kick them off next to their sick foal like help him you’re a human you know how to do things I don’t understand what’s wrong and he’s going to die fix it and then after that they have a mutual-respect thing going on

Kelpie familiars being wary and snappish around any humans but the one they like but running away whenever that one gets near because they don’t understand why they don’t want to eat this one and it scares them

Human companions sitting on the edge of a lake while the kelpie swims and fishes and then the kelpie coming over and the human being terrified because they know how kelpies work and they’ve never dared to touch it before they’re not stupid, and then the kelpie letting itself be patted and then letting the human go again

Kelpie familiars grudgingly accepting that they have to stop drowning people and only eat the things their new friend shows them

Kelpie familiars seeing a random asshole harrassing a random girl on the street and hissing and then the asshole shoves them away and laughs about how ugly this horse is and his hand sticks to their neck and the kelpie just grins sadistically and then the heroine has to run across town and convince her friend not to drown the random asshole because we can’t just go around murdering everyone sweetheart please they’ll kill you if you murder people

Kelpie familiars saving their partner’s life when they’re attacked near a river (because of course they’re near a river, one of them is a water demon why wouldn’t they camp near rivers) and one of their attackers brushes against her and she immediately screams and turns and dives into the water and rips him to pieces and then emerges with her eyes glowing and his blood staining her muzzle and their attackers just scatter because fuck this shit we just wanted to steal your stuff we did not sign up for this

Kelpie familiars looking to their partner and being afraid that they did something wrong because they know they’re not supposed to kill people they haven’t been killing people but they didn’t have a choice this time and they’re scared their friend won’t like them anymore now

Kelpie familiars who are not pets, and will take off your hand if you try to pet them because they don’t kill humans out of respect for their partner but they are are not horses, and they are not tame.

Kelpie familiars who break this rule once, when a small child disappears on the edge of the desert in summer, and three days later when he’s finally found he’s alive and well because kelpie manes drip water, always, and their hides are cool to the touch, and there is one curled around him in the shaded side of a rock keeping him hydrated and not letting him overheat, because their friend says children are to be protected no matter what.

Like dragons are cool and all but

Different varieties of kelpies - Standard ones that look like fairly generic, non-pedigree horses, HUGE Shire kelpies with thick corded feathering that’s turned green with moss, little pony-sized kelpies that can still drown you in a puddle

Kelpies that specialize in drowning people under ice, launching out of ice fishing holes to grab unsuspecting fishermen

Herds of kelpies swimming across the lochs of Scottland, hunting fishing boats as a group like wolves

Mother kelpies teaching their little knock-kneed foals how to hunt, expertly using them as decoys about ‘that harmless little gray mare and her foal’ standing ‘grazing’ on pond plants
