I am a weird-shit magnet. I’ve had a man narrate my putting groceries in my car without acknowledging my actual presence, and up until a few weeks ago that was my most recent totally weird event. Then the chicken happened.

Leading up to my last days at my shitty craft-store job, I had successfully avoided a freestyle-rapping-about-jesus woman, sewing-machine theives and what I’m assuming was a tweaker crafting convention. Life had been suspiciously normal for days, when the manager of the shoe store next door stopped by and asked if any of us left a chicken out back. Unsurprisingly, we had NOT left a chicken out back, so we had to see what in the actual fuck was going on. Sure enough, a chicken in a little cage had been deposited on the loading dock we shared with the shoe store. It wasn’t quite grown, so my guess is it was an Easter chick that, to the shock and amazement of precisely no one, had grown into a chicken. As they do. It ain’t a Pokémon, motherfucker. They don’t just stay small until evolving into Chicken. You knew it was going to grow. Additionally, cages are not Poké-balls. You can’t just stuff a nearly full grown chicken into it and call it good. Do not do that. Anyway, animal control didn’t know what the hell to do with it, and I have some spectacular friends who have a farm, and they wanted some chickens. So I take Chicken-boo home overnight, got some chicken food and put towels down all over my bathroom (which were trashed afterward. Fun fact: chickens shit their own bodyweight every several hours because they nasty), and tried to coax the chicken out of its cage so I could clean it. At some juncture I decided to pee, and that’s when it decided to exit the cage. A great ruffling of feathers and a few “nononono not while I’m peeing”’s later, I had a chicken on my head! It wanted constant snuggles and to sit on my head or shoulder, like I was a Midwestern land-pirate or some shit. It was weird, man. Anyway, it was brought to its new home the next day and is as happy as a chicken rescued from retail-dock abandonment could be… which is pretty fucking happy.

So, the moral of the story is: Don’t be an ill-advised fuckwit and buy a baby chick at Easter. Or maybe it’s “don’t let a chicken ruin all your towels because they are fucking expensive”? Idk, maybe both.

Social anxiety isn’t limited to being shy and quiet. You can be a socially anxious person even if you’re loud and rambunctious. Anyone can have social anxiety; you don’t have to fit the ‘classic introvert’ profile to be valid.
