what if a baby

PHM x ATLA
Like 1000 years after Korra when the world looks a lot like ours, it would be pretty hard to keep track of the Avatar and where they'll be born with how much the nations and peoples have intermixed. Sooo they may have.. sort of... lost? the new avatar? This is a really unfortunate time to not know who the Avatar is when the sun is dying because not even the priests of Agni are having much more luck than the average scientist at figuring out what's going on. Irina Petrova publishes her findings as normal and the world elects a rather unspiritual Airbender to lead the Petrova Project: Eva Stratt. While she is a democratically elected dictator she has one rule: She is not allowed to influence the Avatar should they pop up. She is subject to their judgement as much as anyone else. Things progress as normal, she picks up a mediocre water bender with a PHD in microbiology that is surprisingly against life possessing his own element but she needed free thinkers. One day a terrorist organization with a grenade invades the Vatt and manages to get down to the secure room the most important people are in like the astronauts and lead researchers. They are blocked by a piece of metal from the floor of the ship being bent up and blocking the grenade. When it explodes, the shrapnel is rapidly cooled and thrown back at the attacker, killing them pretty instantly. This wouldn't be of special note except that it wasn't trained military man and earth bender Yao who did it, but the now unconscious Dr. Grace who had clearly panicked and tried to waterbend and well... he certainly bent something. Stratt swears everyone in the room to silence. It becomes clear that Grace has little recollection of the event and after confirming he too believes Yao did it, Stratt adds supervising bending practice of the astronauts to Grace's schedule. After all, we can always learn from other elements. She finds a list of the best teachers the world could offer in any primary or secondary bending skill an Avatar could possibly want to learn Things get tricky when the science officers die because clearly triggering Grace's fight or flight is going to go supremely poorly so if he does decide that he's not getting on the ship willingly they can't just jump him. Historically jumping the Avatar almost always goes incredibly wrong and involves a lot of property damage. So instead of a syringe, within the vent system some narcotic gas is being held just outside Stratt's office with her own bending. When he starts to panic after she pushes, she releases her hold on it and invites him to sit down and walk her through another plan. To his credit, it's a good plan. He'd clearly thought about this too. But it wasn't the best plan and Eva Stratt, holding the core Tennant of her cultural bending history closer to her heart than perhaps any airbender before her that "All life is sacred", cannot settle for simply good. She--the world-- needs the best for this. She believes Dr. Grace can save the world.
4 relative years later Grace wakes up with a perfect memory and a note in his bag "You're the Avatar. Do NOT fire bend in the Hail Mary. Earth and Airbending are also inadvisable before you are absolutely confident in what you're doing. There are plenty of tutorials online. We believe in you." - Eva Stratt (and Carl) The don't go crazy room also incudes little spiritual relics now and a small spirit garden beneath the catwalk.
Grace is convinced that either he and everyone else was crazy for believing he's the Avatar or that he does in fact have amnesia because he thinks he would certainly remember being the Avatar. Also somehow his pet cat-fox is here but a little more... iridescent than they were before. Was Charcoal always that big? Eventually he meets an alien! They can bend too! Initially he thinks it's Earthbending but it is in fact Heavy Metal Bending. No earth bender can bend something like Xenonite Grace is 100% sure. Rocky can even bend pure iron. Apparently it's the only element Eridians have to bend, if they're a bender. Grace has just discovered a 5th element and Rocky has just discovered there's more than one that a person can bend, let alone all the secondary applications. They are both flabbergasted. Charcoal and Rocky beef hardcore. During the Adrian trial Grace goes into the avatar state and its the second most beautiful thing Rocky has ever heard right after Adrian his beloved mate. The nearly dying did admittedly nock it down a few points. Charcoal and Rocky are no longer at odds. So in the end Grace becomes the greatest Avatar of all time, saving not only the world but the known galaxy and creating the geographically biggest era of peace amongst different species ever recorded. The power of friendship should really be counted as another element. Then he one ups even his own self when he gets to Erid and is greeted by THEIR Great Spirit who bestows Heavy Metal bending to him and Raava, thus officially adding it to the Avatar cycle. Which could mean nothing... He solves spiritual problems on Erid, usually at least slightly on accident through the power of cultural sensitivity. The Eridians suddenly understand why it would nice to have one of those all the time.
Also Rocky is the best-- the universe's specialest little guy said it himself. No Rocky will NOT be taking any criticism thank you. After Grace dies about 50 years later an orphaned pebble who recently may or may not have accidentally brought down an abandoned building made of dirt trying to hide from bullies, is with it's classmates taking a tour of the biodome when they hear more footsteps in the sand and a friendly voice that they feel more than they hear that offers to show them their favorite place in the dome. The pebble is intrigued and follows the kind voice and set of two footsteps off the path where they find an outcropping overlooking the ocean underneath a tree with an older Eridian sitting beneath it. The impression of a freezing 5 fingered hand gives them a nudge forward. "Tell Rocky I say hi would ya? I think he needs a hug."
When you meet Edward Elric he gives off the impression that he's the short-tempered hot-headed "violence is the answer to all life's questions" kind of protagonist, and it's in fact incredible character craft that he's actually the character who ends the series with a negative-3 kill count.
people killed: 0
direct orders of "you really really need to kill this guy" ignored: 1
ongoing murders being committed by Ed's own friends/colleagues that Ed got in the way of to specifically stop that murder from happening: 2
God's worst soldier Edward Elric. Showed up as the youngest member of the Amestrian army, took millions of dollars from them, never followed a single order, helped dismantle their fascist regime, left with a lower kill count than he arrived with, then fucked off to go be a house-husband. Character of all time.

love it when fma just says the quiet part out loud
[insert “i know writers who use subtext and they’re all cowards” here]
One of my favourite bits in fma is how during the final arc they bring up why attempting human stransmutation is forbidden, as the readers we've seen what happens when an attempt fails with Ed and Al, so of course the logical explanation is that "it's too dangerous to attempt", or even "it goes against the natural way the world works, it's monstruous in nature and impossible".
But then Arakawa in her infinite wisdom as a writer goes, lol no, the goverment has been making flesh monsters with human transmutations in secret for years, they forbid it so that nobody can't even come close to attempting to create a personal army that cannot feel pain
thank you ao3 for being an archive and not an algorithm. thank you for letting me like things without consequences, thank you for being free with no ads, thank you for having lawyers to defend our freedom of speech. thank you tag wranglers. thank you to all authors and thank you ao3

That is very true.

it WHAT
Planning for a flight now consists of planning out how to document the legal violations the airline is inevitably going to commit.
Since I started using a wheelchair, I have had exactly one (1) flight where an airline didn’t break the law.
The question isn’t “Are airlines breaking the law?” They absolutely are, on almost every flight. The questions are “Does the wheelchair user know their rights?” (most don’t), and “Are they physically and mentally able to document the violations and report them to the DOT?” (most can’t).
[ID: @diffusedmuse “One question if you have a moment: do you confront airlines themselves or go straight to the DOT? For example, they often push me into signing a release of liability in case they wreck my wheelchair, which I’m fairly sure is illegal but I’m afraid to say anything and be denied my flight.”]
Under US law, it is definitely illegal for an airline to make you sign a release of liability for transporting your wheelchair. I would definitely advise you not sign any release of liability. The newest statistics show that airlines damage or lose 25 wheelchairs per day. (Source) You can’t afford for them to not fix or replace your wheelchair if they damage it.
Ҥ382.35 May carriers require passengers with a disability to sign waivers or releases?
“(b) You must not require passengers with a disability to sign waivers of liability for damage to or loss of wheelchairs or other assistive devices.”
(Source)
I always insist on having my wheelchair in the cabin, but if the flight has less than 100 seats they’re not required to have space in-cabin, and if you have a power chair it’s not going to fit in the in-cabin wheelchair closet. So I realize some people have to put their chairs in cargo.
Personally I’d pocket whatever release form they gave me, scan it in when I got home and include it in my DOT complaint. I bet the DOT would be very interested to see what release they’re trying to get you to sign.
I have on several occasions had airline employees threaten to not let me fly, try to maneuver me into agreeing to take a different flight, or insinuate that if I continue to insist they follow the law they won’t let me fly. This is illegal, and I let them know that I know that it is illegal.
Ҥ382.11 What is the general nondiscrimination requirement of this part?
“(4) You must not take any adverse action against an individual (e.g., refusing to provide transportation) because the individual asserts, on his or her own behalf or through or on behalf of others, rights protected by this part or the Air Carrier Access Act.”
(Source)
So yes, I confront the airline employees myself, although I realize not everyone is able to do so. I always have a copy of the law with me - I have a document where I put together the clauses that I know they’re going to violate, and I print out a couple copies before I fly. I also have the full ACAA on my phone. Only once has an airline employee ever looked at the law - they generally just flat out refuse to read it - but I have it with me so I can prove I know what the law says. That means that can’t say “that’s not in the law,” they can only say “I don’t care what the law says,” and that is not going to show in their favor when they have to justify their actions to the DOT.
I definitely also report the airline to the DOT after I get back from my trip. The DOT’s formal investigation process is to have the airline investigate themselves and report their findings back to the DOT. IME the airline always, every time, lies and claims they didn’t break any laws. They generally accidentally admit to breaking a couple laws, but for the majority it ends up being a he says/she says situation.
Personally, I want the airline to get fined for every clause of the ACAA they break when I fly, not just the ones they accidentally admit to because they are that ridiculously unfamiliar with the law they’re required by law to know. (The record so far is fourteen clauses broken on one flight.) So as of my last flight I now record every interaction I have with an airline employee. On that flight, the minute I realized they had found a new and ridiculous way to violate the ACAA, I set my phone to video and put it in a shallow outside pocket in my personal bag with the camera facing out. When I got home, I extracted the audio file from the video, made a transcript, and forwarded both the audio file and the transcript to the DOT along with my complaint. When the airline investigated themselves and lied about what they did, I then forwarded the audio file and transcript to them as well and proved that their employees lied. It was interesting watching them scramble to explain themselves.
The DOT takes a year to process complaints, so I haven’t heard back from the DOT on that one yet, but I’m particularly interested to see how this complaint turns out as it’s going to be impossible for them to squirrel out of any of their violations. I have proof.
After that last flight I bought myself an audio recorder (like the kind you use to record lectures in school) which I now have hanging from my personal bag. Some airlines prohibit photography and video in their contract of carriage, but I have yet to find one that prohibits audio recordings. Part of my prep for this trip has been testing that audio recorder to see what the range is and how well it records, so I know where on my bag to hang it to be sure it records everything that happens.
If you’re recording audio, keep that in mind when you’re dealing with airline employees. Ask for names or read out their name badge (”Jane Smith, right?”) and describe what’s happening if it’s not apparent from what they say. (”Wait, so you’re telling me I need to sign this release of liability form before you’ll transport my wheelchair? You do realize that’s illegal, right?”)
I have an audio recording of an airline employee on my last flight saying “I don’t care what the law says!” and my response which was “I don’t think the DOT is going to be very impressed with that.” I’m pretty sure they’re not. I can’t wait to see the DOT’s response to the airline.
This is absolutely amazing. And it’s great that OP outlines several different levels of protecting yourself against and documenting these illegal actions—because, yeah, not everyone can or wants to go All The Way. But to those who do? We salute you.
Anyway, know your rights when flying, y’all [same source as above, we just wanna highlight it].
Internet commentors turned on D'Arcee Neal after he was forced to crawl off his flight when his wheelchair didn't turn up
That’s my friend D'Arcee from our cerebral palsy support group. This happened over a decade ago. We rallied around him hard and the ableism was ferocious.
My favourite Adrian headcanon is that they're a biologist/zoologist who has seen so much shit, they're completely unphased by any and every alien habit of Grace's.
I mean full-on khaki-shorts-wearing, traversing-wilderness-with-nothin'-but-a-machete Adrian who yoinks snakes outta trees and pets swamp puppies and will unflinchingly dig around in elephant faeces for signs of a rare parasitic tapeworm if needed.
Oh, humans eat socially? No problem, Adrian has observed many many animals eat. Did you know that an obscure species of small underground dirt creature from the north side of Erid also eats socially? Adrian can give you a not-so-short presentation on them.
Oh, the human has no external carapace and so its internal sounds are absurdly loud, wet and off-putting? No problem, Adrian was just conducting an expedition last month researching the incredible eridian animal, the Wet Loud Worm from the south-east region of Wet Loud Wormland. They're desensitised, it's fine.
Oh, Grace leaks often from many orifices and it can be a bit of a learning curve to get used to? No problem for Adrian, see Wet Loud Worm paragraph again!
Meanwhile, Rocky is bewildered as to how he's managed to third-wheel both of his relationships, because both Adrian and Grace are nerds who nerd out about things, and Adrian is shaking in their carapace with enthusiasm to learn more about human culture and biology, not to mention everything about earth animals. And yeah, sure, Grace might be a molecular biologist, but he'll be damned if he'll pass up an opportunity to learn about alien fauna from a fellow scientist, and yes, Adrian, he'd love to hear about the small underground dirt creature from the north side of Erid, and he's so excited to learn more about the Wet Loud Worm, do go on.
#zoologist adrian would be absolutely captivated by the concept of Plants. erid doesn't have those#you mean your atmosphere is so clear your entire planet has ground level sunlight and there's an entire subsection of life#defined by their ability to turn it into energy... because the rest of it DOESN'T? sure you synthetize vitamin d out of it#but that's nothing#saviour grace why don't you photosynthesize question? skill issue question?
Hey. Why isn’t the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isn’t that fucked up? Does anyone else think that’s absurd?
It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!
It’s July 20th. That’s the day of the moon landing. Next year is going to be the 54th anniversary. I’m ordering astronaut shaped cookie cutters on Etsy and I’m going to have a goddamn potluck. You’re all invited.
Hey. Hey. Tumblr. Ides of March ppl. We can do this
Hell yeah moon holiday
Ooh coming up we should celebrate
PITCH: We call it Moon Day, and then every 7 years when it falls on a Monday, that's an even BIGGER deal and we call that Moon Day Monday and go absolutely apeshit about it (the next Moon Day Monday is in 2026 so we have a couple trial runs first)
MOON DAY MOON DAY MOON DAY
moon day is 20th July!!!
Scheduling this a day earlier to remind you all and myself about the Moon Day tomorow!
The 2026 Gender Census is now open!
[ survey.gendercensus.com ]
The 13th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 13th August 2026.
It’s short and easy, for most participants it takes 5 minutes or less.
After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.
If you think you might have friends and followers who’d be interested, please do reblog this blog post, and share the survey URL by email or at AFK social groups or on other social networks. Every share is extremely helpful!
Survey URL: https://survey.gendercensus.com
The survey is open to anyone anywhere who speaks English and feels that the gender binary doesn’t fully describe their experience of themselves and their gender(s) or lack thereof.
Thank you so much!

Research: Understanding MCYT Boundaries
SURVEY LINK
During my time in mcyt fandom, I've watched as the fandom's perception of creator boundaries has grown and shifted into a cornerstone of our fandom, and yet we don't actually have any good data on how the fandom as a whole perceives them outside of discourse posts.
The goal of this unofficial study NOT to make a value judgement on whether creator boundaries should be respected - it is to understand how the fandom currently perceives and interacts with them.* Is respecting creator boundaries important to you? Has your favorite creator made a boundary list or spoken about it on stream? Do you find some boundaries acceptable and others not? Have you ever been the target of hate for engaging with boundary-breaking content? Whether you think boundaries should always be respected or you think they're being used as tools of censorship, I want to hear from you. What are boundaries, and why do they matter so much to us?

This survey is a mix of multiple choice and optional long-response questions. It should take about 15 minutes if you’re only doing the required questions, and much longer if you choose to answer the optional questions.**
If you are able, please reblog and share this survey link around. Feel free to post it on any platform, as I am currently only on Tumblr, which is not representative of the fandom as a whole. In fact, I’d love it if it reached Twitter. The more responses, the more accurate the results will be for the whole of mcyt.*** Anyone in mcyt spaces, including creators, are welcome to take the survey to share their thoughts. However, I ask that for the comfort of content creators and the spirit of good fandom etiquete, please do not directly share the survey with any creator or post the link in any creators’ official communities. Thoughtful discussion is always valued over reactionary comments.
The survey is set to close at 11:59pm EST on August 1, 2026 - I may extend this date if there is still a high volume of responses coming in, or if there aren’t enough responses yet for meaningful data. I will aim to publish the results within a month of the survey’s close, and keep you updated on the timeline if that’s not feasible for any reason.
A huge thank you to everyone who helped beta this survey- you all gave such wonderful suggestions! I wish I could’ve kept every question, but in the end a lot needed to be cut to make this manageable. Please know that I appreciate every one of you, as this survey would not exist today without you.

* Why I think this data is important to collect: The idea for this survey came to me almost a year ago, and I started developing it around February of this year. I’ve spoken with dozens of people about this topic with diverse opinions, read and catalogued hundreds of tumblr posts, rewatched streams and videos by creators and fans, and watched as opinions have shifted across fandoms in real time. I feel extremely confident in saying that every person on every side cares deeply about respecting others and creating safe, welcoming communities in all mcyt spaces. Where they differ is on how to show that respect, which kinds of expectations they think are reasonable in different spaces, and beliefs on how those in power should be using their influence. I don’t expect this survey’s results to fundamentally change anything - this debate has been going on longer than mcyt has existed. But I think it’s still important to analyze the actual arguments people are making and how they affect our communities, instead of focusing on expected behavior from others based on our own values, so we can see the varying expressions of humanity in each other and work towards a better future for our fandom. I don’t think we’re as different as the discourse may have us believe.
** This survey is designed to encourage all participants to think critically about their position and the effects it has. I am aware that I have my own personal biases, so I have taken steps to ensure that the survey is as bipartisan as possible and also gives participants the opportunity to explain their answers for every question if they feel the need. Because of this, there may be questions that make some participants uncomfortable. While I would appreciate knowing why a question has made someone uncomfortable, participants are always free to skip such long-response questions.
*** I’m well aware that any recent discourse on this topic may skew results if arguments on one side are more successful than another in convincing fans of a particular position. I still think the data will be valuable even with a potential skew.
A HANDY CHART FOR THOSE OF YOU WONDERING WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WITH THESE. NOTE THAT THESE ARE ALL THE INFORMAL AND YOU IS THE FORMAL SO LIKE YOU WOULD ALWAYS ADDRESS YOUR SUPERIOR/ OLDER PERSON/ SOCIAL BETTER WITH YOU BUT WITH YOUR BUDS YOU CAN USE THESE.
I’m not sure I knew the thy/thine distinction. Thanks for this!
