"Do you ever dream of land?" The whale asks the tuna.
"No." Says the tuna, "Do you?"
"I have never seen it." Says the whale, "but deep in my body, I remember it."
"Why do you care," says the tuna, "if you will never see it."
"There are bones in my body built to walk through the forests and the mountains." Says the whale.
"They will disappear." Says the tuna, "one day, your body will forget the forests and the mountains."
"Maybe I don't want to forget," Says the whale, "The forests were once my home."
"I have seen the forests." Whispers the salmon, almost to itself.
"Tell me what you have seen," says the whale.
"The forests spawned me." Says the salmon. "They sent me to the ocean to grow. When I am fat with the bounty of the ocean, I will bring it home."
"Why would the forests seek the bounty of the oceans?" Asks the whale. "They have bounty of their own."
"You forget," says the salmon, "That the oceans were once their home."
Last year I finally had an excuse to illustrate this simple little Tumblr story I've had bookmarked forever for class.
I hope you like it :]

A nurse has heart attack and describes what she felt like when having one
I am an ER nurse and this is the best description of this event that I have ever heard.Â
 FEMALE HEART ATTACKSÂ
I was aware that female heart attacks are different, but this is description is so incredibly visceral that I feel like I have an entire new understanding of what it feels like to be living the symptoms on the inside. Women rarely have the same dramatic symptoms that men have⊠you know, the sudden stabbing pain in the chest, the cold sweat, grabbing the chest & dropping to the floor the we see in movies. Here is the story of one womanâs experience with a heart attack:Â
"I had a heart attack at about 10:30 PM with NO prior exertion, NO prior emotional trauma that one would suspect might have brought it on. I was sitting all snugly & warm on a cold evening, with my purring cat in my lap, reading an interesting story my friend had sent me, and actually thinking, âA-A-h, this is the life, all cozy and warm in my soft, cushy Lazy Boy with my feet propped up. A moment later, I felt that awful sensation of indigestion, when youâve been in a hurry and grabbed a bite of sandwich and washed it down with a dash of water, and that hurried bite seems to feel like youâve swallowed a golf ball going down the esophagus in slow motion and it is most uncomfortable. You realize you shouldnât have gulped it down so fast and needed to chew it more thoroughly and this time drink a glass of water to hasten its progress down to the stomach. This was my initial sensationâthe only trouble was that I hadnât taken a bite of anything since about 5:00 p.m.Â
After it seemed to subside, the next sensation was like little squeezing motions that seemed to be racing up my SPINE (hind-sight, it was probably my aorta spasms), gaining speed as they continued racing up and under my sternum (breast bone, where one presses rhythmically when administering CPR). This fascinating process continued on into my throat and branched out into both jaws. âAHA!! NOW I stopped puzzling about what was happening â we all have read and/or heard about pain in the jaws being one of the signals of an MI happening, havenât we? I said aloud to myself and the cat, Dear God, I think Iâm having a heart attack! I lowered the foot rest dumping the cat from my lap, started to take a step and fell on the floor instead. I thought to myself, If this is a heart attack, I shouldnât be walking into the next room where the phone is or anywhere else⊠but, on the other hand, if I donât, nobody will know that I need help, and if I wait any longer I may not be able to get up in a moment.Â
I pulled myself up with the arms of the chair, walked slowly into the next room and dialed the Paramedics⊠I told her I thought I was having a heart attack due to the pressure building under the sternum and radiating into my jaws. I didnât feel hysterical or afraid, just stating the facts. She said she was sending the Paramedics over immediately, asked if the front door was near to me, and if so, to un-bolt the door and then lie down on the floor where they could see me when they came in. I unlocked the door and then laid down on the floor as instructed and lost consciousness, as I donât remember the medics coming in, their examination, lifting me onto a gurney or getting me into their ambulance, or hearing the call they made to St. Jude ER on the way, but I did briefly awaken when we arrived and saw that the radiologist was already there in his surgical blues and cap, helping the medics pull my stretcher out of the ambulance. He was bending over me asking questions (probably something like âHave you taken any medications?â) but I couldnât make my mind interpret what he was saying, or form an answer, and nodded off again, not waking up until the Cardiologist and partner had already threaded the teeny angiogram balloon up my femoral artery into the aorta and into my heart where they installed 2 side by side stints to hold open my right coronary artery.Â
I know it sounds like all my thinking and actions at home must have taken at least 20-30 minutes before calling the paramedics, but actually it took perhaps 4-5 minutes before the call, and both the fire station and St Jude are only minutes away from my home, and my Cardiologist was already to go to the OR in his scrubs and get going on restarting my heart (which had stopped somewhere between my arrival and the procedure) and installing the stents. Why have I written all of this to you with so much detail? Because I want all of you who are so important in my life to know what I learned first hand.Â
1. Be aware that something very different is happening in your body, not the usual menâs symptoms but inexplicable things happening (until my sternum and jaws got into the act). It is said that many more women than men die of their first (and last) MI because they didnât know they were having one and commonly mistake it as indigestion, take some Maalox or other anti-heartburn preparation and go to bed, hoping theyâll feel better in the morning when they wake up⊠which doesnât happen. My female friends, your symptoms might not be exactly like mine, so I advise you to call the Paramedics if ANYTHING is unpleasantly happening that youâve not felt before. It is better to have a âfalse alarmâ visitation than to risk your life guessing what it might be! 2. Note that I said âCall the Paramedics.â And if you can take an aspirin. Ladies, TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE! Do NOT try to drive yourself to the ER - you are a hazard to others on the road. Do NOT have your panicked husband who will be speeding and looking anxiously at whatâs happening with you instead of the road. Do NOT call your doctor â he doesnât know where you live and if itâs at night you wonât reach him anyway, and if itâs daytime, his assistants (or answering service) will tell you to call the Paramedics. He doesnât carry the equipment in his car that you need to be saved! The Paramedics do, principally OXYGEN that you need ASAP. Your Dr. will be notified later. 3. Donât assume it couldnât be a heart attack because you have a normal cholesterol count. Research has discovered that a cholesterol elevated reading is rarely the cause of an MI (unless itâs unbelievably high and/or accompanied by high blood pressure). MIs are usually caused by long-term stress and inflammation in the body, which dumps all sorts of deadly hormones into your system to sludge things up in there. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Letâs be careful and be aware. The more we know the better chance we could survive to tell the tale.â
Reblog, repost, Facebook, tweet, pin, email, morse code, fucking carrier pigeon this to save a life! I wish I knew who the author was. Iâm definitely not the OP, actually think it might be an old chain email or even letter from back in the day. The version I saw floating around Facebook ended with âmy cardiologist says mail this to 10 friends, maybe youâll save one!â And knew this was way too interesting not to pass on.
snopes.com says this oneâs true.
Save a lifeâReblog.
Female heart attacks are much different, and most people donât know it!
This is so much more helpful than the fucking lists that basically describe everything that happens during a really nasty panic attack and then tell you to go seek help as if you donât have an anxiety disorder that does this to you on a regular basis and can afford to go to the emergency room.
Auto-reblog.
Many women have silent heart attacks as well, where there are no symptoms at all until BAM! Then it happens.
Stuck in 1969
spuffy is genuinely so incredible girl i just need to appreciate their arc again. wow. they went from "i'd rather be fighting you / mutual" to "i can fool everyone except myself. or spike for some reason" to "look at my poor neck all bare and tender and exposed" to "you're in my gut, my throat, i'm drowning in you" to "what you did for me and dawn, that was real" to "i know that i'm a monster but you treat me like a man" to "give me something to sing about" to "you belong in the dark with me" to "you gave me the spark and now all i do is burn" to "i've seen the best of you and the worst of you and i understand with perfect clarity what you are. you're a hell of a woman. you're the one" to "i love you... spike."
like can anyone hear me.
okay so i was rewatching stolen earth with my friend (it's their first time watching) and it's like the second time i've watched it after having watched torchwood. and the torchwood team came on (well... 3/5ths) and i was focussing on ianto because he's my favourite character. and. when the dalek's were saying exterminate, gwen was all confused and i was like, why isn't ianto? ITS BECAUSE OF FUCKING CANARY WHARF AND THEN I BECAME SAD BECAUSE LAST TIME HE HEARD THAT LIKE HIS WHOLE LIFE WAS DESTROYED AND HIS FRIENDS DIED AND OH MY GOD MY BOYYYY.
how many times did jack go âand now the doctor is going to show up and save the earth like they always doâ but they dont, they dont show up, no blue box, no screwdriver, nothing, and it gets worse, abbadon, no doctor, 456, no doctor, the miracle, no doctor, do they care? do they really love earth, humans, like they say they do? maybe theyâre only capable of loving one at the time, show them the beauty of the universe, let them burn bright before they burn out, but do they really love humans like you do? did they spend the last 200 years protecting the human race? not really, not like you did. you spent every waking hour praying to them to show up, because they solve everything with grace and wit, and everytime you try to solve anything you end up covered in blood, you succeed but itâs always at a cost, and theyâre nowhere to be seen. do they care? maybe not, but you do, and youâre going to do anything to save the planet you now call home. and itâs ironic, right? they put you in this position, do they know? youâre immortal and stuck there, forever. youâre a fixed point in time because you have to be there, itâs your job, itâs your duty, immortality is not a mistake, it cant be, it has to have a higher purpose, right? right. so you wake up every day, shakes off those feelings of âtheyâre gonna come, one day or anotherâ and get to work, because no, jack, theyâre not gonna show up, you have to save the earth, you have to remember everything they taught you, roll up your sleeves and do it. do it messily, but do it. save the earth, cause theyâre not gonna show up. you learned your lesson, youâre alone in this.
big bad & little bit
"But what if they're secretly upset with me and are just claiming to be fine-" Then they have shitty communication skills and that's not your fault or responsibility
I want to know who prepared Buffy's body. Who dressed her, who chose her makeup, and hairstyle, and clothes. Who washed her. Who got the casket and under what pretenses. Who scoped out a grave spot. Who, specifically, dug it. Who arranged Buffy in her casket, with her necklace. Who transported her and when and how.
I knowww this is not how it happened but in my heart I like to imagine it was mostly willow who organized the whole thing
dawn would want to help. desperately. out of guilt and out of love she'd try and help, but I think willow (and the rest of the adults, perhaps sans tara and a distant giles) would find that too... morbid? sad? they don't want her around her sister's corpse. tara would hem and haw and in the end stay quiet about it because she's not entirely sure if having dawn help would make things all that better for her either. but dawnie gets her vote in anyway when they let her
when they go for a casket, willow frets how they'll explain it. because no one can know buffy's dead, that's why they're doing all of this in the first place, right? giles tells her you don't have to explain it, or for who it's for, because it's pretty obvious why they're getting one. if she really wants to lie though, she can just tell them it's in advance. or whatever she would like to make up. dawn tags along for this one even though giles is wary about it after the last time, but she puts her foot down and demands she gets a say in this. her and willow pick one out together they think is the best for her. when they have giles order a custom headstone, dawn rightfully decides on what it should say. giles does not add any input
willow and dawn, with tara tentatively adding in suggestions, pick the spot to bury her in. it's giles and (primarily, especially by this point) xander who dig it up though. xander tries to make a joke, a shoddy bridge built out of rotting wood, and giles barely even looks at him. and xander's miserable, because normally this would be a group activity, with the girls hanging out around the sidelines, but it's not. it's just them. because the girls have to deal with the body left behind, and then suddenly his job begins to feel like the easier one all things considered
spike finds the hole they dug up later during the night and has a whole new breakdown about it once he realizes what's going on and nobody's included him. it makes it hurt worse that he's even surprised
anya can't stand to be around buffy's corpse. she was originally supposed to be tara's helper, in fact she offered to be, but when she finally comes face to face with what's left of their friend, she freaks out and leaves before they can really do anything. so it's willow who helps tara bathe her, and tara who does her makeup with wil watching, and dawn forces her way into picking out an outfit even though willow firmly has the final say, and xander finally comes in to help wil with her hair since that somehow feels like the most personal thing of all (and dawn cries when she doesn't get to take care of her sister with the others (when buffy comes back, dawn tries her hardest to make up for it))
when they set a date and time, all together, it's willow who goes out and makes the trek to spike's to let him know. he sneers and snarls and hates her, hates them all for leaving him out of it all. willow, stressed and tired and grieving, tells him they didn't even have to tell him anything at all, because he wasn't buffy's friend despite his help and he's certainty not theirs now, so maybe he should just shut up and be there. spike seethes, but he keeps his trap shut. says that he'll be there. so wil, somewhat apologetically but certainly more gentle, acknowledges him, and then gets the hell out of there and back to the house
she thinks about calling angel. xander grimaces, but there's no true objections, so she does. when it's over, she just feels sort of drained. she thinks she'd been expecting more than what she got out of him
the funeral is held during the darkest hour of the night, because they can't have anyone know it's happening. everyone is exhausted. nobody cries, though sniffles are passed around. spike isn't entirely welcome, but he begrudgingly greets willow with a short nod and lets himself be hugged by dawn, so no one even really thinks about shooing him away either (xander, for once, does not say anything. spike, for once, does not instigate him either. neither of them speak at all until it's over). giles looks as dead as buffy does when he's not moving. they all separately head back to their respective homes once it's over. except willow and tara, who head back with dawnie, and don't leave after that
it's almost always as far as I can remember willow who takes over when buffy's out of commission for one reason or another, and I don't think this would be any exception. despite the fact it'd be more of a team effort, I still think it'd be willow who would take care of most of everything, either by delegating or doing it herself. because who else really could besides her?
btw, when gwen says: âwhat are we doing having chinese while a girl fights for her life?â in 1x2 while looking at carys in the CCTV, the camera stops on ianto as he looks down in shame
incredible foreshadow
see the thing to me is that i don't think the fact that eleven, twelve, and thirteen all hate ten should be interpreted as like, narrative proof that ten is dumb and cringe and should be disowned as an incarnation of the doctor. i think it makes perfect sense that his own successors would feel that way about him, but like. ten isn't the doctor's equivalent of "your younger self who naruto ran through the hallways in middle school," he's the equivalent of "your younger self who had a psychotic break." and also never really got treated for it, and now the active psychosis has largely gone away but you're still mentally unwell and generally full of self-loathing and suicidal tendencies.
ten embarrasses his successors because he broke. and eleven, twelve, and thirteen are all trying SO HARD to convince themself that they're better now, they would never break down like that, they've moved on, but it's so painfully clear that they are still the same person. they hate ten because they are him and he is them and they hate themself for being weak and vulnerable.
and of course they play it off as a comedic thing, a "haha wasn't i sooo embarrassing and annoying when i was lying about being 900? good thing i'm not like that anymore!" thing. because to acknowledge what ten really was would be to acknowledge that they, the doctor as a whole, are vulnerable. that they can break down completely. and the doctor is not going to do that, because they're stubborn and arrogant and they need people to think they're cool. and there's nothing cool about a manic episode.
it's not that the other nuwho doctors literally unironically are nicer and humbler and better-adjusted than ten. it's that thinking about him (or meeting him) forcibly reminds them that they aren't.
Belinda Chandra had a baby she wasn't supposed to have with a man she didn't love, in a reality created by a conservative misogynist. The story ends with her entire life being rewritten without her consent to revolve around this baby and this is framed as a happy ending.
Amy Pond carries her husbands infant to term without knowing it and wakes up during labor to realise her body has been invaded and treated as a tool, and her daughter is taken away to be turned into a living weapon. This is treated as a horrifying invasion of her life and she kills the woman who did this to her.
