lgbtqia+ dictionary: queerphobia edition

queerphobia - umbrella term for hate and discrimination against those in the lgbtqia+ community; includes homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, aphobia, etc.

overt queerphobia - queerphobia that is social unacceptable (e.g. hate crimes, slurs, assault)

“gay panic” + “trans panic” - legal defense in which the accused claims they acted in a state of violent temporary insanity after learning of someone’s lgbtqia+ identity

covert queerphobia - queerphobia that is socially acceptable (e.g. microaggressions, cultural appropriation, social exclusion)

performative allyship - making a gesture in support of the lgbtqia+ community for the appearance of being an ally while not making an effort to support the community in real situations

pink capitalism + rainbow capitalism - exploitation of the lgbtqia+ community by corporations to increase sales, particularly during pride month (june)

erasure - ignoring or removing representation of the lgbtqia+ communities from any conversation, movement, history, or project

tokenism - being represented or labeled based purely on one’s identity and nothing else (e.g. the “gay friend”)

fetishization - sexual fascination with things that are not inherently sexual; sexualization of queer identities (e.g. gay people being a “guilty pleasure”)

infantilization - treatment of asexual and aromantic people as children due to their lack of sexual attraction

medicalization + pathologization - categorization of lgbtqia+ identities as medical conditions to be “fixed”

conversion therapy - pseudoscientific practice used to “fix” queer people; includes shaming, electroshock therapy, and other harmful methods

rogd - abbreviation for “rapid onset gender dysphoria”

this term, created by online users known for transphobia, was meant to explain why children come out as trans* suddenly, providing transphobic parents a reason to deny their child’s gender identity. It has been used to scare trans* teens away from transitioning by posing the risk of being “wrong”

bathroom bill/debate - debate stemming from a north carolina house bill, hb2, preventing trans* people from using the bathroom matching their gender

this was enacted in march 2016 but struck down in july 2019

“gay agenda” - concept created by the religious right as a way to describe advocacy for acceptance and inclusion of queer identities; shifting queer identities from self expression to a political agenda

tone policing - debate tactic that aims to decrease the validity of an argument by attacking the tone in which it was presented rather than the message 

terf - trans exclusionary radical feminist; self-identified “feminist” who actively pushes trans* people out of conversations and accuses trans* people of lying, invading women’s spaces, and being their assigned gender

transmisogyny - dislike of or prejudice against transgender women, due to the intersection of transphobia and misogyny

straight + cisgender privilege - social advantages attained by being straight and cisgender; avoiding the obstacles in place for LGBTQIA+ people

heterophobia - ignorant concept that straight people are oppressed for their sexuality by queer people in the same way that the lgbtqia+ community experiences oppression

straight pride - ignorant and homophbic concept that straight people deserve a pride festival equivalent to that of the lgbtqia+ community

heteronormativity - the assumption of heterosexuality; ignoring and excluding other identities, either consciously or not

amatonormativity - societal expectations of wanting relationships, prioritizing romance, and having a family/children

cisnormativity - the assumption of everyone being cisgender; ignoring and excluding other identities, either consciously or not

toxic masculinity - harmful societal stereotypes that men are expected to follow (e.g. repressed emotions, dominance, “boys will be boys”)

“no homo” - originally used by straight men to indicate that something they said/did was not gay in the derogatory sense 

it has been adopted by some queer people as a joking rebuke 

“no romo” - alternative created by the asexual + aromantic communities for similar use as “no homo” except for romance 

internalized queerphobia - queerphobic ideas that have been subconsciously accepted by a queer person, often causing internal struggles with identity and self acceptance

gatekeeping - limiting access and inclusion to the lgbtqia+ community by members of the community

“gold star” gay - gay person with only same gender relationships this term is used to shame gays and lesbians for having had relationships with another gender/sex prior to coming out

exclusionism debate - debate within the lgbtqia+ community as to whether asexuality and aromanticism are “queer enough” to be included in the community

enby skeptic - person who debates, doubts, or denies non-binarism

this is usually based on beliefs of equating sex and gender, sex/gender binarism, or “male” and “female” brains

drop the t - movement from within the lgbtqia+ community that advocates from removing trans* identities from the community

dysphoria debate - debate within the trans* community about whether gender dysphoria is required to be trans*

tucute - abbreviation of “too cute to be cisgender;” those who believe that gender dysphoria is not a requirement of being transgender

truscum - abbreviation of “true transgender scum;” those who believe that gender dysphoria is a requirement of being transgender

these two terms were created online by a cisgender girl posing as a transgender girl who believed that gender dysphoria was not a requirement.

transmedicalist - those who believe that dysphoria is a symptom of being transgender and that dysphoria is required to be transgender

medicalization of transgender identities allows insurance coverage of physical transition (e.g. hrt, surgeries).

trans trender - someone who is perceived as identifying as trans* to be “cool” or “trendy”; this terminology is often used as transphobic rhetoric against those who do not conform to binary gendered expectations

“pedosexuals” + “map”s- those who consider pedophilia to be within the lgbtqia+ community; minor-attracted person

nomap - non-offending minor-attracted person; someone who believes that pedophilia is a queer identity and personally has pedophilic attraction to children, but does not act on it and therefore is “non-offending”

p.e.a.r. - acronym for “pro expression anti repression,” also represented by the pear emoji; similar message as maps, arguing for the inclusion of pedophiles in the lgbtqia+ community (where they do not belong)

the message and motivation of these groups and anyone who supports these labels is dangerous, abusive, and unwelcome in our spaces. this is not only harmful to the victims of pedophilia and children in general, but it also harms the lgbtqia+ community by misconstruing the community with pedophilic attraction. so-called “pedosexuals” are not a part of the community

lgbtqia+ dictionary: sex + gender edition

sex - combination of biological factors that dictate physical characteristics, such as sex chromosomes, hormones, and other sex characteristics; often matches an individual’s gender

gender - an individual’s internal alignment with a particular label or identity (e.g. man, woman, non-binary, etc.) that often dictates behavior, dress, pronouns, and other characteristics

agab - assigned gender at birth; the gender someone was labeled at birth

amab - assigned male at birth

afab - assigned female at birth

binary - representation of gender and sex are composed of two distinct categories, male and female

spectrum - representation of gender and sex as a sliding scale between two extremes, male and female, with a “gray area” in between

continuum - representation of gender as a  continuous range of genders, each of which blends into the next in a circular motion, from male to non-binary to female to agender/genderless to male again

gender identity - how someone, usually a trans* person, identifies or labels their gender

gender presentation - the outward presentation, dress, mannerisms, and behaviour through which one expresses their gender

androgyny - gender neutral presentation; can be a combination of masculine and feminine aspects or rejection of gendered characteristics

gnc - gender nonconforming; behavior, expression, or presentation that does not conform to the societal standards of one’s gender

drag - usually queens or kings; art form in which a person dresses as a different gender, typically dramatic or theatrical

gender incongruence - difference between biological sex characteristics and internal gender alignment that results in an individual being transgender

gender euphoria - happiness and relief caused by external validations of gender

gender dysphoria - distress caused by the mismatch between one’s assigned gender and actual gender

mental dysphoria - internal recognition of one’s dysphoria, triggered generally by the awareness of one’s incongruence with their assigned gender

social dysphoria - dysphoria triggered by others’ perceptions of one’s gender (e.g. gendered spaces, clothes, misgendering)

body dysphoria - dysphoria triggered by the mismatch in sex characteristics and gender (e.g. chest, genitals, menstruation)

transition - process of social and/or medical changes that some trans* people undergo to better connect with their gender

social transition - transitioning to live as out as trans*

medical transition - transitioning with hormones and/or surgery

second puberty - intra-community slang referring to the puberty-like effects of medical transitioning, specifically hrt (see below)

passing - ability of a trans* person to be perceived as their gender in the eyes of strangers; “blending in” with cisgender people

stealth - a trans* person living as of they were cisgender, not sharing one’s trans status in order to pass as cisgender, for safety or privacy

ftm + mtf - abbreviations for “female to male” and “male to female” to describe trans men and trans women respectively

many trans* people consider this language problematic and outdated as it emphasizes their assigned gender or what they were “before.” Some make an analogy with referring to someone as “child to adult” instead of an adult.

hrt -  hormone replacement therapy, typically estrogen (“e”) or testosterone (“t”) supplements

pre-t + pre-e - abbreviations for pre-testosterone and pre-estrogen, usually used to refer to trans masc/men and trans fem/women respectively who are not on hrt but plan to be in the future

puberty blockers - gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists; hormone treatment to prevent the effects of estrogen or testosterone to postpone puberty

detransition - undoing one’s transition to move back to one’s assigned gender, after seeking hrt and/or surgery to transition initially; this happens generally when someone medically transitions, but finds that the effects cause more dysphoria than their previous state 

gender affirming surgery - surgery used by some trans* people to physically alter their body to better fit their gender

srs - acronym for “sex reassignment surgery,” the medical process of surgically altering one’s sex organs to appear and function like those of one’s gender (changing from the biology associated with one’s gender assigned at birth)

pre-op - pre-operation, usually referring to someone who has not had top/bottom/facial surgery and plans to in the future

top surgery - surgery of a trans* person’s chest, either to reduce or augment size

bottom surgery - surgery of a trans* person’s genitals to better represent their gender

ffs - facial feminization surgery, surgery on a trans* person’s face to be more traditionally feminine

chosen name - name a trans* person has chosen to better fit their gender

birth name - name someone was given at birth

deadname - birth name of a trans* person who has since changed their name

binder - a compression undergarment used to bind one’s chest, creating a flatter appearance; method typically used by trans men, trans masculine people, and non-binary/GNC people to reduce chest dysphoria

to bind: to wear a binder

lgbtqia+ dictionary: representation edition

queerbaiting - intentional marketing technique in which creators hint at but do not explicitly include lgbtqia+ representation, with the purpose of attracting lgbtqia+ audiences without alienating other (homophobic + transphobic) consumers

queer subtext - underlying and distinct theme of queerness in a piece of content, particularly the inclusion of hints at a character’s identity without explicitly stating it

this can be done unintentionally or intentionally; however, intentional queer subtext may overlap with queerbaiting depending on the context

queer coding - process of making characters seem queer (“coding”) without explicitly stating it, often unintentionally

straight washing - portrayal of queer characters as straight, making LGB characters appear heterosexual, or altering information about historical figures to make their representation comply with heteronormativity

essentially, this is the process of taking a queer character/person and portraying them as straight

lgbtqia+ dictionary: the community itself edition

“coming out” - revealing one’s membership in the lgbtqia+ community

“closeted” + “in the closet” - not being public or visible as part of the lgbtqia+ community (as opposed to being “out of the closet,” or “out”)

to be “outed” - to be revealed as part of the lgbtqia+ community without consent

“glass closet” - closeted do to lack of interest or inquiry by others, not by choice 

label - the specific word(s) used by an individual to define their identity, specifically their sexuality, romantic orientation, or gender

fluidity - the concept that one’s identity is not static or unchanging

split attraction model - way to represent one’s identities that includes both sexual and romantic attractions as independent (___sexual ___romantic) but describing one’s whole identity

micro-labeling - describing or attempting to describe every facet of one’s identity to the point of harming and limiting one’s identity

straight passing - when a queer person does not “look queer,” whether that be their physical appearance or their relationship

this is most often applied to bisexual, pansexual, aspec, and trans* individuals who are in relationships perceived as heterosexual

reclaim - to take a term that has been used as a slur and use it as a positive word within the community (e.g. “queer”)

lgbtqia+ dictionary: attraction edition

romantic attraction - desire for romantic contact or interaction with another person; feelings of infatuation and the desire for a romantic relationship (“crush”)

platonic attraction - desire for friendship with another person (“squish”)

sexual attraction - sexual desire for another person (“smush”)

sex favorable - having a positive attitude towards sex for oneself

sex indifferent - having no opinion on sex for oneself; having neither positive nor negative associations with sex

sex averse - having a negative attitude towards sex for oneself

sex repulsed - to be repulsed by sex for oneself

sex positivity - movement seeking to change cultural attitudes around sexuality, promoting the recognition of sexuality as natural and healthy for society as a whole 

aesthetic attraction - interest or appreciation for someone’s appearance (“swish”)

sensual attraction - desire to touch or be physically close to someone in a nonsexual way (“lush”)

queerplatonic attraction - desire for an emotionally committed non-romantic relationship (“plush”)

qpr - queer platonic relationship; a close relationship, typically between two or more aromantic and/or asexual people, that is not based on sexual or romantic attraction but rather commitment and closeness

qpp - queerplatonic partner, also a “zucchini”

alterous attraction - desire for emotional closeness without inherent platonic or romantic implications; ambiguous attraction often characterized by willingness for romantic, sexual, or platonic relationships

tertiary attraction - umbrella term for attraction that cannot be categorized as either sexual or romantic
